Public transport bus in Rarotonga

Has anyone used these clockwise and counter-clockwise buses that go around Rarotonga?

They appear to be an easy and inexpensive and fun and interesting way to get to the southeast coast from the tender docking location in the north.

Yes we have used them many times.The clockwise one goes on the hour and the anti clockwise goes on the half hour,or vice versa,can't remember which.You can usually wave the bus down,no need to find a stop.Three years ago the fare was NZ$2 which is the currency used in the Cooks.Just tell the driver where you want to get off and he/she usually remembers.

Do they accept any other currency, and is correct change required? We usually don't spend much in our port stops, and don't expect to need much cash in NZ$ -- so where might we cheaply get just enough to pay for the bus and maybe a snack along the way? Are there any other expenses we might encounter that I'm not aware of which would need to be paid in cash NZ$? We are planning to just ride the bus to Muri beach and have a laid back day. Are there any other must-do activities that we should know about?

We are planning a cruise on the PG that is the 11 night Society and Cooks and are also very interested in any info that you can provide. :D

The NZ$ is the currency in the Cooks,shops,cafes,bus etc won't take any other.You should be able to exchange at one of the banks in town.

I think that the last time we were there we googled the bus info and found out about fares timetable etc.

There is a Cook Island tourism website that has most info on it.

If you're just there for the day I would suggest what you are doing,maybe take snorkel gear or just swim.At Muri you can hire kayaks.

As for other activities it's a question of time and preference,we like to walk,swim snorkel and have the odd game of golf.

You will find Cook Islands much quieter and more laid back than other Pacific destination

Simply exchange a little at reception, no problem. The exchange rate is very fair on the ship and for small quantities it's just fine.
