That's a good drive from La Romana, taxi from Dreams to the Punta Cana airport (PUJ) is $100/couple roundtrip and Dreams is in Bayahibe which is 20 min closer to PUJ. Renting a car would be ideal, it's a nice, new highway all the way and a safe area to drive although we haven't been to the Catalonia.

Have you already taken the Seavis Saona Island excursion, and the Pro Excursions Catalina Island excursion? If not I would certainly consider these first, excellent, top-notch operators and both very nice days. Just depends on whether you want to experience smaller, fast motor boats or a luxury cat. And you don't have to snorkel or even swim to enjoy these.

Definitely better than spending 2.5 - 3.5 hrs driving a boring road! Return for a land vacation and stay at a resort to experience even more of the beautiful area. But if you're dead set on going to Punta Cana you'll find help on the Punta Cana forum on tripadvisor.
