Harvest Caye OR Belize City

I'm planning a W Caribbean cruise out of New Orleans. They have two itineraries. The only difference in the itineraries is that when the ship ports in Belize one itinerary ports the ship at Belize City. The other itinerary ports the ship at Harvest Caye.

Which one would you recommend and why?

I'm not sure that Harvest Caye is developed yet. It'll be owned by NCL. There was controversy back a couple of months ago between NCL and the Belize Tourist Association which is seeking to block development. Harvest Caye is in southern Belize thus a tad nicer and with reefs closer in and better shore beaches. Many cruisers have hoped to be able to venture to southern Belize but it's too far to reach and return from Belize City. But southern Belize residents are behind the deal. NCL will tear out mangroves and uproot coral reefs in building their port facility.

Assuming Harvest Caye is developed, it'll probably b similar to other "private islands" cruise lines have throughout the Caribbean. If this proves to be true, then many cruisers will enjoy the "private island" more than trying to find excursions in Belize, especially if the natives and expats living in southern Belize are "hostile" to cruise ships.
