We will be in Nassau in a month and were thinking about wondering throughout the shops outside the port area. Then make our way to Junkanoo beach for a coulpe hours. We did this 3 years ago and loved it. It is still safe a a couple to walk this distance with all the crime going on?

You'll be fine. I was there a few weeks ago, and it was fine. Just be aware of your surroundings and don't bring any unnecessary valuables with you. It's really the same for traveling in any big city. A bag that zippers shut is better than one that doesn't (provided you zip it up ;)). Don't flash your money around. Don't engage with people trying to sell you things, just say "no thanks" and keep moving. However, I've found that once you're out of the immediate port area, everything calms down considerably.
