handicap parking in fll

I see where handicap parking is free in miami. Does anyone kow if this is the same in FLL. We usually park at the port and have always been charged w/handicap plaquard in place (MIA & FLL). I have no issues with paying but are you suppose to ask or....? Just wondering how that works.

My sister has cruised out of both Ft Lauderdale and Miami. She said that in Ft Lauderdale you have to have one of those scooter things to get free handicap parking (they have the handicap tag for their car....didn't pay in Miami but did in Ft Lauderdale
