Le Saint Bonnet Restaurant - English menu

Recommended Posts

A few folks have shown an interest in me posting my menu translation for the Le Saint Bonnet restaurant in Progreso - so without further ado - here it is! :) The original Spanish terms are in italics, the English translation is in regular typeface.

I have highlighted items that I have no idea about whatsoever in RED. If anybody can help me with the descriptions/ingredients for these items, your help would be GREATLY appreciated! Also, if anybody notices any inaccuracies or errors, please feel free to post them here and I will amend. Thanks!

While I can say we enjoyed our time at this place and the massages were wonderful be careful of the prices. Ask before you order. We had 2 margaritas (2 for 6) 2 beers and 2 virgin diaquaris and it was $33. When we questioned it they said that the virgins drinks were $8 ea but still it would not add up to 33. If we would of run a tab we would never have noticed the overcharge. Just be careful.

Wow! A lot of work went into putting that menu up there! I will try to help by clearing up an item every once in a while, OK?

Starting at the bottom of the menu:

Flan Napolitano is indeed, a flan, no cheesecake in it. Popular dessert item here in the Yucatan.

Pan de Cazon: This is a local specialty. They use dogfish or whatever this shark is called in your neck of the woods and cook it in a zesty tomato sauce. This fish is then piled onto a corn tortilla, which is then covered by another corn tortilla and the process is repeated until it becomes a stack which is why the dish is called a "pastel" or cake. Usually served with a refried beans sauce and chile habanero on the side. It is really good!

Brochetas Mar y Tierra - This is what on many menus in the USA is called Surf and Turf brochette or skewer or shishkebab.

More later....

Hello Trin,

Thank you very much for your efforts with the menu! Fantastic!

Also will you update us on your cruise and how it went? More specifically which excursions, if any, you did and how they turned out and what you might do different next time. We are heading out the 4th. Thanks!

Here are three more menu items from the Yucatecan Specialties section:

Frijol con Puerco (Lunes)

Pork and beans (Mondays)

Frijol con Puerco is one of THE quintessential Yucatecan dishes. Made in homes on Mondays, these are black beans and chunks of pork, served as a soup and come with radish, tomato sauce, habanero chile salsa, onion and occasionally avocado, all as a garnish that you can add to taste.

Queso Relleno de Carne

Cheese stuffed meat

Queso Relleno is another traditional favorite. It consists of a large round Dutch Edam or Gouda cheese, that will be hollowed out over a week or more, as the family enjoys the cheese on crackers or crispy french bread. Then, the outer shell is cleaned and stuffed with a mixture of pork and beef, cooked with capers, olives, almonds and non-spicy condiments. The whole thing is then wrapped in a muslin cloth and steamed for hours. Served in a white sauce with another tomato sauce on top. To die for!

Longaniza Asada

Grilled sausage

Longaniza is similar to chorizo but thinner and had a distinct smoky flavor. Excellent with scrambled eggs or by itself in a fresh corn tortilla. Served with grilled onions and a roast tomato sauce. Habanero chile salsa optional.

Enjoy!
