Mediterranean, do I need dollars and Euros?

Recommended Posts

We are going to the Mediterranean this summer, should we take Dollars as well as Euros in cash?

We from Britain so tipping for everything is a bit alien to us, so we thought we had covered this by pre paying tips but from reading the boards these tips don't cover everthing and I still need to tip people. We were just going to exchange some pounds for Euros for spending in ports but should we get American Dollars for these extra tips? or are Euros fine?

thanks for your advice.

Hi,

We're only taking Euros for Italy and Greece. And Whatever they use in turkey and Egypt.

The travel Agent recommended between £50 and £100 a day max for the days on shore per couple. You'll only need it f or souveniers, drinks, snacks etc.

Also pre pay your tips in advance unless you're going with one that has tips included in price like Thomsons.

If I need to tip anyone extra I'll use Euros.

If you need any help our email is berwynthomas@aol.com

We were wondering the same thing, we have pre-paid our tips too, but need Euros for the ports so we are going to take cash in dollars to pay our bills on board, it would be a better exchange rate than they give you.

If you have prepaid your tips then there is no one else you have to tip. The only person I can think of is if you have room service delivered. Then a few $ or € would be good.

As the crew are in Europe for the summer I am sure they will find a way to spend €.

We have always given extra tips in Europe in Euros and no one seems to mind. I know the crew send their regular tips back home but they need money for personal items in port so I assume they need Euros for that.

Unless you are going soon and already got your Euros, in view of the current exchange rate Our T.A. has put us in her book and if it looks like it will fall below 1 to the £ she will ring us so I can get down there and get them.

You might want to check if yours does similar

We will be onour first cruise this summer.

We plan on taking Euros for on shore and some Dollars for tipping room service.

We have prepayed our tips too, so much easier than working out how much to give each person.

Ellecruiser which cruise are you on this summer?

We sailed on the Independence last year in the Med, having cruised before and used dollars we were unsure.

We took some dollars, the staff were happy to take either dollars or euros as tips, we had pre paid but also gave extra if the service was good.

Our cabin attendant prefered euros as they could then spend them in the few times they went ashore.

Euros you will need for ashore and dollars for the casino.

However you can get dollars for the casino on your seapass in the casino with no charge. Any dollars you have left, just pay onto your seapass bill before the last night.

We are doing the Med cruise on Brilliance and will be taking Dollars for ship, Euros for Spain, France and Italy, Kuna (for Croatia) and whatever Greece has if not the euro, and Swiss Francs for Zurich on the way there and back, plus pound sterling for the taxi and airport - all part of the fun, although not a good exchange rate at the moment :(

When we did the Med cruise, we took euro's with us, at the time the euro cost was

100 euro equaled US $1.41, at this time it is trading at $1.27, not a bad price. We took about 1,500 euro with us, we did run out and you can buy euro's on the ship at the prevailing rate, we charged it to our seapass account. (I did not have any complaint with the rate the ship charged, it was fair) as far as the on-board account it was in US dollars.

Youll need more Euros for Greece.
