  1. For me too. What I loved about cruising was the formality and dining with others. Without those things cruising has become just another boat ride, not the elegant escape. I enjoyed ATD but still opted to share a large table with others. I go to resorts and restaurant and happily eat with me and mine. On cruises I get a pretty frock or gown, smile and share a meal with people who share a similar interest. So sad to see this and a decent cut of steak slowly disappearing from the MDR. I am happy I enjoyed it when it was the norm and cruising was about tradition. ;) No it doesn't surprise me, one bit.

    My thoughts, exactly!!

  2. Coat & tie on elegant nights and slacks and collared shirt on others.

We are just off the Miracle and I would rate the whole meal as a 10. Shrimp cocktail, Fr. onion soup and filet absolutely superb. Followed by the sinful chocolate sampler for dessert!

    Enjoy

I have a December 1st reservation at Nick and Nora's on Miracle.

Great to hear you enjoyed your dinner!!

  3. Welcome aboard!!

Most of my cruises have gone solo- best ones were when I was seated at a large table of solos for main dining room dinner.

Went to the dining room after I boarded and requested one of these tables.

Sometimes I just got assigned to one, without asking.

  4. This is one of the reasons I find this forum so interesting. I certainly don't mean do be critical of your dining habits, because everybody has different priorities, likes, and dislikes in life and it's certainly not my place to pass judgment on yours.

With that being said, I can't imagine not enjoying fine dining and fine meals on a regular basis, and $35 doesn't even come close to buying a fine meal in a land based restaurant. I had lunch today with a friend and I just went and looked at my copy of the receipt.....

    Two salads @ $9 = $18

    Two Soup de Jour @ $7.50 = $15

A modest bottle of voignier wine - $33

With tax and tip the total was $87. And we spent about two hours enjoying good food and great conversation. I consider it time and money very well spent!!

Yes- lunch for my daughter and I runs $100 these days..

  5. I have never been charged a penny while using my phone on the ship in either Puerto Rico or St. Thomas. You can even use it while you are at sea, as long as you are close enough to US land that you are picking up an AT&T cell signal. As long as it says AT&T in the upper left corner of your phone, you are fine. If it says ANYTHING other than AT&T, you will be charged.

What about Verizon in Ensenada, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta?

  6. Too much discussion according to whom?

Haven't seen anyone who purchased FTTF "gloat". They just posted about how excited they were and glad they were able to purchase.

As Platinum, I really like FTTF allowing DW and I early access to our rooms. About this I will "gloat". While I may/may not agree with the FTTF Program, this part has been good to us.

    Agree. "Too much discussion (?)"

I can carp about something I don't care for but DON"T need to be told to ditch Carnival.

  7. I lived near Statesboro for many, many years (Metter) and I think the first pajamas in public I ever saw were at the Statesboro WalMart!

My 1st PJ sighting was at Fred Meyer in Oregon City, Oregon.

  8. It doesn't bother me per say, but it is indicative of the society we live in today. People are completely oblivious to those around them and live in their own bubble.

What if a man decided he would just hop out of bed in his underwear and have breakfast in the morning. would the reaction be different?

What if I hadn't showered in a few days and smelled ripe. Sat down next to you and your family. Would that matter?

There is a level of community that we all must abide by to keep the world in order. It is reasonable to expect that when you go out in public, you attempt to make yourself somewhat ready for that venture. In our society, that means putting on clothes and cleaning yourself.

Oh and I don't doubt this happens on most cruise lines. People are oblivious everywhere. Often times those with more perceived "class" are the worst.

I saw some people who seemed to be living in their robes on a highend European cruise but I don't think they were from the U.S.

Maybe they thought they were on their own private yacht?

They wore designer sunglasses, watches, jewelry and sometimes expensive-looking shoes, with their robes.

    Everywhere, it seemed.

I thought it was a cultural preference....

  9. My wife and I have wore our robes to and from the hot tub when it was cold outside the last day of our cruise once. Does this make me a bad person?:D

I have done this, as well as wear my robe to spa appointments.

I do try to avoid the public areas, such as the promenade, etc.

  10. You like the goat roast in a taco better than the regular cat in a taco?;)

Have had some "interesting" contents in my tacos.

(I love to travel alone in Mexico and do the local thing.)

    But- cat??

As pesky as stray dogs in Mexico can be around the taco carts, they may be thrown a bit of tainted meat but not made into the contents, I don't think?

    Enlighten me.

  11. Had goat once..on an island (forget which).

    Not fond of it.

I do love goat cheese however :)

My dislike of goat cheese is something I try to hide from my foodie friends.

Difficult- my daughter's a sommelier, who pairs wine with food.

They try to sneak it into dishes and I can ALWAYS taste it.

Like in the fairytale "The Princess and the Pea."

She could feel a pea under 20 mattresses.

I can taste goat cheese from a mile away.

Your palate is much more sophisticated than mine...

Wish I could appreciate it like you do.

    Pam:)

  12. OK...you're little angry guy () threw me off :)

I love your screen name by the way!

I'm sorry. I could have just said "ugh" or "oofda."

    Really enjoying this thread!!

First cruise was my honeymoon (9/11/77) on the Pacific Princess.

I didn't know it was "The Love Boat" that would start on TV that month.

When our "honeymoon" (marriage) was over, started seriously cruising, almost always solo since 2002.

Hence, I am a "seasoned" cruiser (frayed) and am not afraid to enjoy life...

    Hope this is not TMI.

  13. as a new level, they never had. I would gladly take the free steakhouse dinner and cruise upgrade over a lifetime of free entriees. I still have a stack of free entries I've never used.

Added to both Platinum and Diamond since, on ships with FTTF, is priority luggage and cabin readiness. These also did not, at least officially, exist. I don't mind people paying to subsidize my benefits. :D

Exactly. I don't care about laundry or casino entries.

But the priority luggage and cabin readiness is more than welcomed by me...
