  1. Has anyone noticed how you can see the evolution of cruising in RCCLs ships? First, there was Sovereign had few balconies. Then the Vision class finally introduced more balconies. The Voyager class brought mostly balcony cabins. Then, the Radiance class brought the sticking out balconies. But, why weren't balconies popular is the 80s or 90s?

It puzzles me when fictional characters are godmothers of ships, such as Fiona or Tinkerbell.

  3. I'm partial to themes within the class-either in meaning like freedom, liberty and Independence or "shiney" things like Radiance class or by "sound". So in the case of Anthem and Quantum I want a name that ends with "M". The latest Oasis class needs a vowel at the beginning and it needs to express the uniquely large and comprehensive quality of these ships- they are like an oasis and alluring!

As for the actual names- maybe Atrium for Quantum class or Essence for oasis class. I'll leave that to the marketing gurus, but that's what would "sound" right to me!

Do you like Spectrum for Q3? And I like Essence for O3.

  4. I was on the Radiance on an Alaskan Cruise last September and the Brilliance out of Tampa in February .......just walk right on through....it seems like there is never anyone in Rita's on the Radiance Class ships...: (

I like how Royal is trying to Oasis-ize all of their ships.

  5. And just imagine, those ships were the grandest on the ocean when they first came out, sailing 7 night itineraries!

Monarch will always be special to me because she was my first RCI cruise and i wish I could have sailed her one last time. The small cabins wasnt an issue as I require an accessible cabin due to my wheelchair. Actually the accessible deck 9 SOV has so far been the largest cabin or at least seemed like it that ive had on an RCI ship. I think its two SOV cabins made into one and has two windows!

I will rue the day when Oasis and Allure are the old ships.

  6. The four Radiance class ships have something that no other ships in the fleet have: outdoor aft Windjammer seating. For us, this is spectacular. Our last 5 cruises have been on this class and there is absolutely nothing like sitting outside for dinner, watching the sunset in a different port each night. It is glorious. Our Med cruise was phenomenal because of this feature.

    .

That sounds awesome! The Carnival Paradise had that and I loved having early morning breakfasts on sea days!

  7. Royal Caribbean recently signed a new agreement with Port Canaveral which includes a per-passenger fee to cover half the cost of the new $65 million terminal under construction. That terminal is being built to be able to handle an Oasis class ship. It is highly likely they will be moving an Oasis class to Port Canaveral once the 3rd ship comes online in 2016.

This is so great to hear!!!!

  8. According to your signature, you have been on one cruise, and it wasn't RCI. Please correct me if I'm wrong. How can you say that Radiance class is odd when you haven't sailed on any of them? All the classes of ships are different; there is no comparing "Radiance from Voyager".

Why does this puzzle you? No other terminal can handle them at embarkation/disembarkation. They both sail full every week. It's easy to understand.

    .

I am not comparing the ships themselves based on personal experience;just on features and size/pax capacity.

And I'm not saying they are odd, I'm just saying that they are different from most of the RCI ships.

  9. That would be nice. Unfortunately for us Floridians, Royal Caribbean has decided that moving a lot of ships from the Caribbean to Europe in the summer is the best use of their fleet. That means the available inventory for Florida based cruises is at its lowest when demand is at its highest. That, of course, equals less select AND high prices.

In 2015, Royal is just leaving us with Oasis, Freedom, Enchantment, and Majesty! Majesty will be leaving soon too to sail for Pullmantur. They should move Allure to PC and Freedom to Europe. Then, keep Enchantment in PC. Move a Radiance class and Vision to Tampa. Keep Oasis in Fort Lauderdale. Move another Vision there. Keep Majesty...for a few years. Keep Indy or Freedom in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. Anyone agree?

  10. RCI ships are usually here (I live near Tampa) November through late April or early May. They'll both be there for the 2014-2015 season. Not sure on deployments for the 2015-2016 season.

I live in St. Petersburg, Florida. I wish they were here in the summer! With school and work schedules, it is hard to go on a winter cruise.

  11. Not every class needs to be larger than the last.

Radiance was built for specific purposes. Namely, to be able to transit the Panama Canal, to be able to cruise Alaska and other colder destinations, to be able to fit into smaller ports, and to provide great views of the scenery from indoor areas.

Voyager class is not suited for any of those things.

Like the Radiance Class before it, Quantum is designed for cold water sailing. The ships are designed for the cold with a lot of interior spaces, even going so far as to enclose a non-adult-only pool for the first time. Sure, Quantum may be deployed elsewhere over the course of its lifetime, but anyone who was paying attention could pretty much tell you that the first 2 Quantum class vessels would be making their home ports in New York and the UK.

Where will Quantum 3 likely be deployed? I think Q3 should go to Alaska. Riding the north star over icebergs....

  12. It seems to me that the bigger ships are all doing mostly seven night runs and the smaller ships are getting an odd mix of short and long cruises.

I have noticed that trend as well, esp. w/the Radiance and Vision classes. For example, the Brilliance is doing short 4 and 5 night hops from Tampa. Also, the Enchantment is doing 3 and 4 nights while the Legend is doing 10 and 11 night Tahiti and Asia cruises!

  13. He never said Radiance of the Seas was a failure. He said "Project Radiance" was a failure. Project Radiance had nothing to do with the Radiance Class ships themselves. Project Radiance was the name of a drastic change in the organizational structure onboard the ships. As Goldstein directly explains in this often mis-quoted blog post:

"Project Radiance was a far reaching effort to re-think our approach to operating our ships, primarily on the hotel side of the operation but certainly having implications for the marine operation as well."

By the way, the Radiance Class ships themselves came out of Project Vantage. I've never heard anyone at Royal Caribbean say Project Vantage or the Radiance Class (as the ships became known) were a failure.

I can see why they named those ships Project Vantage!

  14. Adam Goldstein never said that the Radiance class was seen as a failure. He was referring to "Project Radiance" which was a complete reorganization of the management structure and staffing plan for the hotel operations on the ship. It was also largely a failure due to the fact that they implemented it with rookie staff with little to no cruise ship experience. It had nothing to do with the Radiance-class ships themselves other than that it debuted on Radiance of the Seas.

Thanks for the clarification. The Radiance class seems beautiful and classic.
