  1. It is located on deck three. They took part of the main dining room and converted it into Luminae

Thanks. I suppose the change was so recent that the deck plans I've seen have not been updated yet. Good to know it's not too far from our cabin at the stern......don't want to get TOO much exercise, y'know.;)

  2. Blu is open daily for breakfast and dinner with no lunch service. In my experience, Blu on Reflection has been much busier at dinner service because there are more cabins with access to Blu on that ship.

Thanks to all who replied; sounds wonderful! We are looking forward to our Celeb cruise.....last one was in 2006 although we've done about a dozen cruises since then. The Celebrity Century was one of our favorite cruise ships....we like the smaller ships; but they are getting nearly impossible to find!:o

Now, can anyone tell me on which deck the Luminae restaurant is located? I have been over the deck plans and cannot find it. I saw someone on the 'net that it was on deck 4, another said on deck 3, but the deck plans I can find do not show the Luminae.

  3. I didn't find the music so loud as to prevent me from booking those cabins again - they are awesome otherwise. But if you are close to the elevators and have normal hearing, most of the time you will be able to at least hear the music faintly. The lower the floor you are on, the louder the music is likely to be. The closer to the elevators - same. For the record, we are early to bed folks most nights as well and unless you are very sensitive to noise when sleeping it should not be a problem.

Thanks. I'll start looking at the cabins available to us. I am getting a category 2A, and I think most of those are on deck 7; have to check and get back with my TA ASAP.

  4. This is exactly what we did and found. I at first thought too, "oh no". But really when in your room, the music is very muffled. And it doesn't go on that late.

Depends on your definition of "late"!;) Mine is 2200/10PM, maybe a bit earlier than many cruisers! I might take my "white noise generator" on the cruise. It's useful for drowning out music and load talking. I am one of those folks who are easily distracted by noises when I go to bed......luckily I am also a bit deaf!

  5. Yes, we stayed in an Aqua cabin - one of the angled ones off the hump. No elevator noise at all. We did hear atrium music noise. So if you are one to hit the hay early, then this may bother you.

Thanks to all who replied....you answered my question about the elevator and those who ride them. I don't see a problem with that for us at all. Yes, other cruisers can be rude on their cabins, and that noise will drift into ours, but that's always luck of the draw.

BUT.....I have heard several negatives about the loud music from the atrium; now that is an issue I had not considered until now! We follow Mr Franklin's advice as to when to go to bed and get up ;), so that noise could be an issue. Any suggestions where to book to avoid the loud music from the Atrium? We have been considering deck 7, one of the category 2A veranda cabins as I outlined in the first post in this thread.

  6. It's Feb. 19th, 2017 and Carnival.com only shows a max of 10 rooms/category.

Pick the room(s) you want and call carnival. You'll get the one or very near the one you want. Those cabins aren't "that" popular.

I wonder why Carnival would show them sold out if they really aren't? Weird marketing ploy?

PS - I'm the original poster......we booked the NCL Dawn out of NOLA for March 2017. Reason? My wife said yesterday she didn't like the Dream the last time we sailed on her.......case closed......anyone who wants to reason with my (or their own) wife is welcome to try!:D

  7. Considering a 2A veranda cabin on the Eclipse. Seems like the view on these on the "hump" or widest part of the deck (7) would be good, BUT if appears these cabins (i.e., 7221-7239 and 7266-7284) are right next to the elevators. Or are they? I cannot find a really good deck diagram, or photos, but it appears there might be a bulkhead/wall between the elevators and the cabins.

Can anyone help me with that? If there is a lot of elevator noise, I'll just book the next category down (2B) and find a cabin farther from the elevators.

    Thanks!

  8. Can you expand on this because for those dates the vast majority of cove balconies are still available.

17 Feb 2017 - cruise.com shows Cove cabins only available under the galley. Same thing for Carnival's web site; they show forward and aft coves are sold out. :(

Guess I will look at the non-Cove balconies that do not overlook the hot tub deck.......

  9. We were in a cove last year on the Dream. The cove is great for the closeness to the water but carnival has a real problem with their ships before the breeze. They are just ugly. You can't beat the value that carnival provides and the food we found was quite good but the rooms and the ship is dreary. And we saw a lot of rust and paint issues all over the ship. In certain places they tried to re paint and it looked like a 2 year old painted it.

Hey if you're talking paint jobs, how about those NCL hulls!

I think just about all the cruise ships in the last 20 years are ugly in a way....they all lack the grace and streamlined appearance of the "ocean liners" of the 1950s and 1960s. But I understand the economics of scale.....I just wish the ships looked more like, well, ships!

  10. Thanks for all the replies! Appreciate the great information I always get, and I try to return, on this forum.

I did checking with Carnival's web site (or maybe it was Cruise.com?) on the cove cabin availability and all that showed were the ones under the galley, which we want to avoid. Based on the replies here, I am going to re-check with Carnival's site and also some others to see if the less noisy cove cabins are available.

We are odd-balls apparently and actually like the NCL ships on which we've sailed. The 100% open seating appeals to us, as does a coffee maker in the cabin. Silly reasons, eh?;)

  11. We sail out of NOLA about every year. Usually on NCL, but occasionally on CCL. I am asking help before I book our next cruise out of NOLA for 2017. The CCL Dream and the NCL Dawn are there. We prefer NOLA for our "winter" cruise as it's an easy drive from our home....do not like flying!

We have not sailed on the NCL Dawn, but have on the Jewel and Star, one of which is in the same class as the Dawn I believe. We like the "freestyle" amenities and the smaller ship atmosphere of these smaller (compared to the Dream) ships. We like the coffee maker in our balcony cabin.

We sailed on the Dream a year or two ago. The ship was okay, but our balcony cabin was, IMO, horrible and I swore I've never sail on the Dream again. My complaint? Our balcony looked over a deck with hot tubs full of noisy children and other rude guests - NOT over the ocean! I suppose I would consider the Dream again, but ONLY if I could figure out what balcony cabins look over the ocean, not another deck. I am aware of the Dream's "cove" balcony cabins and they sound great, but there are none suitable for our preferred sailing dates (Feb, Mar 2017).

Can anyone recommend a deck where we can get a balcony cabin that does not overlook a bunch of hot tubs, etc?

    Thanks very much!

  12. I was just visiting favors by serendipity website and I know a lot of us use their luggage tag holders. Just thought you'd want to know they have lowered their prices. What a deal! Mine have lasted for years.

There are many vendors on eBay who can make a dozen or so brightly colored plastic tags with personalized info to attach to your luggage. Cost is usually around $12 per half dozen. I have used those for years and they are indestructible in my experience.

  13. we just got off the Grand and we were in E732 the suite on Port aft corner. We loved the position. The wake is noisy but we liked that. The balcony was huge and sheltered, we had shade going down to Mexico and sun coming back. As others have said there is indeed noise on this side because the cabins are directly above the stage in the Vista Lounge. Most mornings they had Zumba start at 9am which was fine because we were headed out to breakfast anyway. Some evenings we could hear the music and singing very clearly, but it was always over by 11- 11.30 ish. Did not spoil our vacation, but some people may not like it. I would book the aft again, nice and private balconies.Oh and for those that don't know the aft of the ship is rockier than midship cabins... be prepared for some swaying - I liked it but it is much more noticeable. I am still feeling it now 2 days later!

Thanks for that information. We are early risers, and early to bedders also! I think Ben Franklin had something to say about that! So the noise from the Vista lounge would probably be an issue for us, since we normally are in bed by 10 PM. Still, the other attributes of that particular cabin are intriguing: we like to hear the water go by, and we like the rocking.

  14. ...

I thought it worked out so well for us that I plan to take more bottles on our next cruise.

I agree, Princess' bring-on-board wine policy is one of the best. We rarely take any wine from our cabin to anywhere else, although we have taken a glass from the cabin to enjoy with some brief pre or apres dinner entertainment.

  15. E731 on the Grand is a balcony. It's considered a premium balcony because it has the aft view. The balcony is covered. I would be sure to pick cabins on the Emerald deck starboard side on the Grand. Port side cabins on the Grand tend to be noisy from the sound from the Vista Lounge.

Thanks for that helpful info! That is indeed my plan. We usually get a balcony cabin on the Caribe deck for our Caribbean/Hawaii cruises, but for this Alaska trip, our 50th anniversary, the cabin amenities and view are more important that a large balcony.

  16. We booked E729 on the Grand last August in Alaska. We had a fantastic view from the extended balcony which was partially covered and there was no wind.

Thanks Suzie. I have been considering that specific cabin. It is a Mini, correct? I can't tell from the deck plans that it has an extended balcony (which is not that important to me), but I do appreciate hearing about the wind and that it is at least partially covered. I'm assuming the view is better from E729 near the stern than from the 6 or so Mini cabins farther forward on the Emerald deck?

    Doug

  17. E731 is a regular balcony cabin on the Grand. The cabin and bathroom are the same as any balcony cabin. We are booked in E730 next month on the Grand. We love the aft view and the covered balcony. Also, there is very little or no wind on these balconies.

The minis on the Grand Class ships do not have covered balconies except for 6 on each side of the Emerald deck. These cabins go quickly.

Happy 50th Anniversary. We are celebrating ours with a cruise to Alaska in June of this year!

    Cheers, Denise

Thanks so much Denise! I appreciate hearing that, and solving the mystery. I was surprised to hear you say the wind was very little on that balcony, I'd expect it to be pretty bad since it was an aft cabin. But we have never had an aft cabin, so I cannot speak from experience.

So, I am not planning on booking one of the Emerald deck cabins.

    Doug
