  1. The word i'm getting on the street is that the issue is a lack of pilots and cabin crews. The new rules for crew rest that came into effect January 1 have been known for years, and all the airlines have ramped up hiring so that they had extra help just in case something like these storms happened... except Jet Blue.

They elected to roll the dice and hope that a series of "system wide" storms would not adversely effect their scheduling. Well, guess what... They are the ONLY carrier to have to shut down for 2 days to get their act together... So they saved a few million on crew costs, and COST them tens of millions in revenue (and how much more in bad feelings)

Reading on a pilot website, it seems to be the opinion of many in the business that the new rules regarding pilot rest times, like those for truck drivers, may in fact have totally unexpected consequences, none of which will benefit the airlines, the pilots or the long suffering traveling public.

  2. It's approximately 180 miles so it would probably be just over a three hour bus ride.

    :D

Not so. You might average 60mph between Calgary and Swift Current, but you better not be doing 60mph through the Key Deer sanctuary outside of Key West, nor through any of the little towns that dot that causeway. I'd guess between 5 and 6 hours more likely, depending on traffic up around Miami.

  3. First, thanks to the OP for opening up his and his family's life for public enjoyment.

It runs forty pages the way my computer is configured, and I have read absolutely NONE of the text, yet.

But what shines through all forty pages is high quality people, very much in love, enjoying wholesome fun and entertainment with the enthusiasm which comes from working hard at a worthwhile job and saving for a fun time.

SO-thanks, truly, for sharing your excellent adventure. It was a pleasure and privilege to share your fun. I hope that I can return and read some or maybe all of the text.

  4. I thought the day I was there it was busy! WOW!!!

    Holy You Know What, Batman!!.

It was 1968 when my then wife and I spent ten days in Jamaica. We were the ONLY people at the falls with the guide the day we climbed up them. There were some hummingbirds along the edges, but NO other people.

  5. On a recent trans Atlantic crossing, I saw the captain alone at a table above the reception area. We had met before at a "select" group of 1,200 latitudes members [including one woman on her 62nd NCL cruise], so I smiled and said hi. He asked a question about a movie that was being projected on the wall near the Blue Lagoon which I answered. We chatted for a few minutes, he asked me to sit (table for two) and we grabbed some coffee and sat and talked for almost an hour. [i think he may have been somewhat lonesome actually.] When we were done, I joked that I could tell my friends I had dinner at the captains table, which was ... well .... sorta true. Nice guy.

  6. "If we had it to do over again, we would have passed on that cruise. There was just too much to do that she couldn't do, she felt bad about it and I felt bad that she felt bad. I would say that if you decided to go, your experience would be "discounted" by more than the money you would loose if you cancelled."

Great post and wonderful logic! I really appreciated all the posts in this thread and thank you all for the input. Here is what I found out today - NCL was very kind and gave me all my money back and also gave me a free cruise on the ship of my choice once the little one is born. Ok, back to reality. I called multiple numbers. The reservation department told me to call some customer care number. I called customer care and they told me to call the reservation department. This was all after spending about 20 minutes with each department. But basically they said they would give me 50% back (as many here noted). It seems like I might be getting all of certain taxes and fees back because it really comes out to be a 57% refund.

There was also some debate to as how the refund worked. At first two people told me I would have to cancel my cruise with the reservaton department and then submit in writing an appeal for a refund. I found this very odd b/c it meant I could cancel my cruise, they could resell it and in the end I could get no money back???? The last person I spoke with (I got his name and ID #) stated if I cancel I get a credit back in 7 days. No appeal or anything is needed. So basically when all is done I would be out about $1,600. I have until 8 days before the cruise to do this with no further penalties.

Wondering why you ignored what I thought was pretty good advice from I think it was beachick and call latitudes first.
