  1. The next step up in taxi would be an 8 person mini van and the lowest price I found for that was around 125 usd. We all will have the Copenhagen card, so to spend a lot extra for taxis seems like a waste.

Just for your info, there are regular minivan taxis that operate on the meter. They are around 50 % more expensive than a regular taxi. They are not as widespread as normal size taxis though

  2. Using a credit in Copenhagen, is a PIN required?

Only for automated machines, such as ticket machines on the train stations. In restaurants or regular shops, you get a receipt to sign.

There might be a few street vendors or small shops who only take the Danish debit card (Dankort) or mobile payment solutions only available to Danish consumers.

  3. You can check public transport here: http://www.journeyplanner.dk

It seems right that you can take bus 26 through the centre to Copenhagen Central station. Trains to Roskilde are very frequent from Copenhagen Central station. Almost all trains going west stop at Roskilde station.

Instead of taking bus 26 you can also walk to Østerport station and take a direct train to Roskilde. Also very frequent.

The trip to Roskilde is covered by the Copenhagen Card. If you don't have that you should buy a 24 hour ticket costing 150 DKK.

  4. Except that I'm arriving on a cruise ship and can't get to any of those places without paying for the transport that the card is supposed to cover.

Am I missing something? On their website it only lists 3 places in the city (one of them the airport) where you can activate a voucher or buy the card.

If you are arriving at Oceankaj terminal you can get the card at the 'visitor centre' there: https://www.visitcopenhagen.com/cruisecopenhagen/copenhagen/copenhagen-visitor-service

You can check other sales points in the city here: https://copenhagencard.com/sales-points

  5. Thank you for this advice GradUT. We are arriving at Copenhagen at 7a.m. and are due to the ship at about 2p.m. We are planning to go to the port to drop off the luggage – we have one bag per person - then do a 3-hour walking tour of Copenhagen and get to the ship to check-in. Is it doable?

It might be doable. But you wont have a lot of time. Getting out of the airport and going to the cruise port will probably take around 2 hours give and take. Then it's 9AM. Then you can drop off the luggage and take the bus back to the centre and be there around 10AM. A three hour tour, and then straight back to the cruise terminal around 2PM.

You will save time by leaving your luggage at the central station. As far as I know most walking tours start at the city hall square close to the central station. That will give you around an extra hour to have a bit of breakfast or stroll around yourselves.

If you choose to go to the cruise port to drop off the luggage first it might be a good idea to buy the citypass ticket (80 DKK) You will only save 50 cents, but then you will have your ticket ready the whole day.

  6. Danish Viking, I would appreciate your input on this. Our T/A disembarks in Copenhagen. We are taking the ship's excursion called Royal Copenhagen with Airport drop'off. Would it be acceptable to tip the drive in Euros as that would be the only thing in Denmark that we would need cash for? Thanks for your help.

Note that the tipping culture is very different in Denmark/Scandinavia than in the US. Most Danes wouldn't consider tipping a Danish bus driver on an organised tour.

If you do want to tip, I am sure Euros will be fine. Most Danes (and especially bus drivers) go to the Euro zone countries once in a while.

  7. Thanks for all the information, Danish Viking. I've been trying to decide it we should get the 24 or 48 hour Copenhagen card. We arrive after 9 pm on Wed 7/11 and head to Cruise terminal Friday noonish. We are on NCL Breakaway. Should we just pay for transportation to Hotel Mayfair on Wednesday night and to the pier on Friday and use the 24 hour card on Thursday? Or does it make it worthwhile to do 48 hours. Is the transportation that we will need be included in the card?

The Copenhagen card is a bit pricey. So it only makes 'economical' sense to have on days where you use for entrance to attractions: musems, tivoli, etc. In you case, I would just buy the 24 hour one (or none at all, depending on how many attractions you can fit in), and then buy single tickets from the airport and to the cruise pier.

The transportation you need is included in the Copenhagen card, but you will be paying a substantial premium for that if you buy the 48 hour card. It does make everything easier of course (to have one ticket for everything).

Another option is to get the 'city pass' which is a transportation only card covering the centre of Copenhagen (including to/from the airport and cruise piers). It costs DK 150 (~ USD 24) for 48 hours.

A single ticket from the airport to the centre costs DKK 36. A single ticket from your hotel to the cruise pier costs DKK 24.

How would we get from the airport to First Hotel Mayfair.

You take the train (not the metro) to Copenhagen Central (København H). Exit via Vesterbrogade, and from there it is a short walk west via Vesterbrogade (5 minutes)

  8. Thanks. We'll be there the end of July, so I guess this does effect us. How far do you need to ride the bus to the Ryparken station? When I had originally asked you about our plans to go to both Frederiksborg and Kronborg, you told me to do it in that order because the trains would be more comfortable on the way back. I hope we still get some time on the comfy trains.

The majority of the trip will be on the bus to Ryparken station. Then the last part will be on an s-train to the centre (10 minutes or so). So none of the comfy trains unfortunately.

If you prefer to go by train you will have to back-track with the local train to Hillerød and the S-train from there, but it will take half an hour longer.

You can check http://www.journeyplanner.dk It is updated with all the changes in schedule.

  9. Doesn’t necessarily have to be Danish, a nice mix would be nice.

Was just wondering if anyone knew of anything outside

Tivoli for a nice dinner beforehand.

    Thanks for your response

For 'new Nordic' food (nothing weird), you can head to Høst or Vækst. A three course menu will cost around 300-350 DKK (this would be the normal range of a medium-priced restaurant in Copenhagen). These two restaurants are run by the cofoco chain which has a lot of restaurants in the same price range. There are also italian, french etc. Usually the restaurants have a very limited menu but the food is generally very good.

  10. Thank you so much... do you know if we would be allowed to park 3 days prior to the cruise or is it only open when there is a cruise ship in for embarkation ?

I don't know for sure, but I am almost certain that the parking lot is just self-service where you pay the ticket for your desired number of days. I shouldn't matter what your cruise itinerary is.

  11. Danish Viking,

We will be staying near the Forum metro stop. Would you be able to tell me how we can get there from the airport and then to Oceankaj from there? Does it make sense for us to buy a two-day travel card (can't recall what it's called)?

From the airport it is easy. You just take the metro from the airport and get off at Forum station. The metro ride takes 17 minutes and a single ticket (3 zones) costs 36 DKK.

To Oceankaj, you can take the metro towards the airport and get off at Nørreport station to connect to bus 25. Single ticket (2 zones) costs 24 DKK.

It takes around 15-20 minutes to walk from forum station to the city centre, so if you are able-bodied you might not need public transport during your stay in the city.

There is a 48 hour citypass which costs 150 DKK. It covers all public transport in the centre (including going to the airport and the cruise ship terminal). It doesn't include excursions to, say, Roskilde or Frederiksborg castle.

Additionally there is the Copenhagen card, which costs 575 DK for 48 hours. Besides public transport it includes entrance to most attractions (museums, tivoli, canal tour etc). You need to visit quite a few attractions for it to be worth the money. The Copenhagen Card works in the entire Copenhagen Region, so including Roskilde, Frederiksborg castle (Hillerød) or Kronborg castle (Helsingør)

  12. @Danishviking Thank you for your help for our first hotel. We also have a hotel for one night after our cruise. This one was chosen to be walking distance to Central Train Station so we can catch the train to the airport the following morning. I understand both are budget hotels/hostels. One is Annex Copenhagen Hotel and the other is the Saga Hotel. Price difference is negligible and reviews seem in favor of Annex, except for maybe it's exact location. What is your opinion on that? And would the best way to get to either of those hotels from Oceankaj? Taxi? I am not opposed to a bus and train ride. Thanks again.

It seems that both hotels are in the same block. So location wise, they don't differ that much. Note that this is in the red light district. It's not an unpleasant or unsafe area, but you will notice certain shops and associated activities. Halmtorvet/The Meat packing District just next to the hotels is a nice open square with a lot of cafés and restaurants.

For Oceankaj, you can take any northbound S-train to either Østerport or Nørreport station, and a bus onwards from there. Check http://www.Journeyplanner.dk for public transport connection and Danish Viking's guide. A ticket costs 24 DKK. A taxi will cost around 200 DKK. It should be very easy to get a taxi in that area.

  13. Could you please tell me how to get to my hotel from the airport using public transportation?

    Mitchellsgade 14

Take the train (not the metro) to Copenhagen Central station from the airport. Tickets cost 36 DKK

When you are at the central station, exit by the stairs/elevators on the rear end of the platform to Tietgensgade. From there it's just an easy 5 minute walk to your hotel.
