  1. Thanks for the great review & photos. We are taking our very first river cruise next month on the Scenic Jade (Budapest to Amsterdam) and can't wait!

You wont be disappointed. We are just back from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Jade. Staff are so good! Nothing was too much trouble. I felt sorry for them though as they never seem to sleep! You will be thoroughly spoilt.

  2. How long did it take to go to Linz and what did you do there? It looks like we might have to do the Salzburg trip. Two hours is not long enough to visit. We were hoping to go through the old town of Passau where my grandfather lived.

I am just back from Amsterdam to Budapest, and have the daily programme right here. The ship arrived in Passau approx. 8am, then sailed again at 10.15am for Linz, arriving there at 5.30pm but not sailing from there until 9.45pm.

They are fairly relaxed about people doing their own thing, just as long as you let them know. As someone else suggested, you could leave the ship in Linz and re-join under your own steam in Linz.

We stayed onboard that day as we were under the weather, and the trip down the river was very interesting if you do decide to board at 10.15am.

I will try and post a photo of the daily programme.

  3. Looking at the brochure and on line it's all in one day the two places are only about 22 miles apart. Although we have done Budapest to Nuremberg before our first Scenic cruise we may do the Jewels of Europe next year which will be our 6th Scenic cruise.

That's how I read it too. :) This will be my first cruise, but already plotting for the second!

  4. We could have done both last November on Avalon, but since we had been to Rothenburg Au Tabler before on our own, I had no desire to take a bus ride an hour each way. We did the Bishops palace that was saved by the Monuments men, and then went shopping eating and drinking around Wurzburg. Both are very nice.

I don't mind the travel at all. I figure I'm there to see as much as possible. :)

  5. We also arrive in Prague (via bus I believe) on Oct 6, but we will just have finished our 15 days on the Jade, from Amsterdam to Budapest. We may be on some of the same tours/dinners. I understand our hotel is the Marriott, but we are now just waiting on our final docs to confirm. :)

  6. Thank you for some great info. I have been wondering about timing etc, as we too are on Scenic, from Amsterdam to Budapest and this all applies to us (apart from the Cesky Krumlov option), but not until late September. Can't wait!

  7. Thanks. I read your earlier thread - I'd posted elsewhere and I think it was moved. Not a big deal if we don't, I just thought it looked more interesting than Salzburg, but in saying that, I've also always wanted to go there so at least I don't have to make that decision now :-)

  8. HenrysAunt, we just got back for the Gems of the Danube on Scenic. The excursions from Passau were booked on board when we embarked. They handed out papers to be completed with the options for several ports and asked for them to be turned in that night. Then they know how many buses and guides to allocate to each option.

We went with Cesky and it was a neat medieval village. The people that went to Salzburg were equally happy with their choice.

Brilliant, thank you so much! Three and a half months to go and I CANT WAIT!!

  9. Has anyone recently done the Scenic cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest? I have seen on Getaway, Jamie Durie doing an option from Passau to Cseky Krumlov, rather than Salzburg. I can't find anything written about it and am wondering if this is still an option. Many thanks for any info :)

  10. Just wondering if anyone who has recently done a Scenic cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, could tell me if there is still an option from Passau to see Cesky Krumlov, or only Salzburg? I've seen some mention of Cesky Krumlov, and its on one of their videos, but there is nothing mentioned on our itinerary. Any info would be appreciated :)

  11. I'm wondering if anyone had been on the Scenic Jade? I'm curious if it has a spa pool on the top deck? I know some do, but unsure of the Jade. Just deciding whether to pack togs, although I do plan to give them an outing at a spa in Budapest.

  12. Hi - from reading your post, it seems that you want to see your route laid out nicely on a mapping app? If that's all you want, just use Google Maps, find your cities, and save them as favorites. Then when you zoom out, your route will appear as a series of stars - one for each stop.

If you're looking for river water levels, other information, and some offline maps, CC member ingo_e made an app a few years ago - as Fuel Science has already mentioned.

That is exactly what I want to do. Doh, I should have thought about google maps. Too easy! Thank you ;)

  13. Afternoon Henrys Aunt,

    LoneStarCruisinCouple Lisa and Gary here.

We did your itinerary last September on the Scenic Jasper and spent three days in Amsterdam at the Toren Hotel and three days in Budapest at the Four Seasons Gresham Palace Hotel. We didn't have time to include Prague.

You are certainly in for a treat as not only Scenic but your itinerary is ideal. Probably the most popular.

We had an issue last year with Low Water Levels but made it without a hitch as Scenic designs their ships a little different than most. Saw and talked with a lot of folks on Viking and had to be bused to different ships as to continue on. That meant packing and unpacking.

Anyways Scenic is impeccable. We were in one of the Royal Panorama Suites and having a private Butler sure was nice in bringing coffee and orange juice and sometimes breakfast and setting up on the balcony.

Cabin was huge 475 sq. ft. and had a Cocktail Party with 14 folks with tables with Cheese and Crackers and Cold Cuts and one with wines and one with glasses and had room to spare.

With being all inclusive is a nice touch also with Limo transfer services is great. Private concerts very nice touch.

Yes already booked for September of 2017 Spectacular South of France with Paris and we ourselves are adding Nice and Monte Carlo.

Wishing you smooth sailings and a Funtastic time.

Yes the cruise is great, however it is the folks that you meet and the Friendships that are formed as those are the ships that shall Sail Forever.

Thank you so much Lisa and Gary! I've been following your posts, and finding them VERY helpful. Not much about Scenic here, but being from New Zealand, we know all about them and are more than happy to use them :-)

  14. Try these sights okay not apps but may be of help.

anyoverip.de/scenic shows the positions of all Europe based Scenic ships.

marine traffic.com and vessel finder.com by which you can track virtually any vessel. Enjoy your cruise we go on our fifth with Scenic in June. CA

Thank you for that. I'll give that to my nephews so they can follow us!

  15. We are off in September with Scenic, Amsterdam to Budapest, then on to Prague - cant wait!! I wondered if anyone has any advice on a free app to use so I can mark all our ports of call so we can see our route? I've looked at a few so far haven't come across anything great. Any help would be appreciated :)
