  1. We used Special Needs at Sea last September for a wheelchair when we boarded the Getaway last September.

    Several things to consider:

Contact NCLs Access Team prior to cruising. They will make sure your cards are at terminal B. Once you do this, make sure you go to Terminal B even if your docs say to go to Terminal C.

A Special Needs at Sea rep was stationed right inside the terminal and he had the wheelchairs right past the security checkpoint. The guy was extremely helpful.

In the past when we’ve cruised other lines, the wheelchairs were already in the rooms but I liked this set up better. It was nice to have someone there to answer any questions we may have.

  2. I have been on two Alaskan cruises. One was a bit rough (End of season) and the other was smooth (beginning of season). Like others have mentioned, I counted on ginger in the form of candied ginger and ginger gum. In addition, on the rough one, the Captain announced that all cabins would be receiving green apples to help with motion sickness. Now I am a person who gets sick in the back seat of a car or even standing on a dock watching a boat bob up and down and I never got sick so I highly recommend both candied ginger and ginger gum.

  3. Thanks for answering questions. I looked for your answers post, but haven't seen it yet. I just thought of a question that I was hoping you could answer. On the Getaway, if my memory serves me correct, if you are in the Garden Cafe and go to the very aft of the ship, you can go back outside and there are tables there with a bar that is staffed. It was never crowded because no one knew about it. Could you check and see if there is a Garden Cafe Bar in the same place on the Escape? Thanks!

  4. Thanks, John! I'd say that the slot pull was around 15 minutes, with the cabin crawl taking around 35-45 minutes...though there are a number of variables, too, like how many are taking part in the slot pull and/or how many different cabins there are to see (not to mention the size of the ship and how far apart the staterooms are).

Thanks for the quick reply. We’re on the Escape as well.

  5. Sorry for the delay - internet was down for quite a bit of the day today.

After that, we all made our way up to Deck 15 aft for a penthouse suite.

Some of the veteran Cruise Critic folks surprised one of the ones doing the cabin crawl who was celebrating a birthday with a delivered cake, decorations, etc. (you can see some in the pictures). For the life of me, I cannot remember whose birthday it was, though – I forgot to write it in my journal...sorry! Needless to say, they pulled off a good surprise!

The slot pull and the cabin crawl took about an hour, and the rest of the Mushfam was probably getting a little antsy. I said my goodbyes to all (declining multiple offers to take a piece of cake for the road) and thanked them for helping put on all the events!

I’m VERY glad that we signed up for the various events that was set up on the Roll Call. I think we had a good mix of people that seemed to get along well, and, as I mentioned earlier, we found ourselves in the same place as those we met on a number of occasions. Thanks to all who volunteered to put everything together!

Great review!! Love your humor! Quick question as I am organizing the slot pull and Cabin Crawl for our upcoming cruise and it’s my first time organizing them. Did they take a total of an hour or an hour each? Thanks!

  6. We’ve been to Cozumel on Getaway and Dawn and both times docked at Punta Langosta which is pretty much right in the middle of town. We will be on the Escape next month visiting Cozumel again and are again scheduled for Punta Langosta.

Here is a schedule I found for the beginning of Nov showing the Getaway at Punta Langosta.

    Bueller?

Is anyone reading? Not sure if I pissed anyone off about After MIdnight. Let me know if you are interested in the rest otherwise, I can stop.

But I'll restart another one in December so you can't ditch meeeeeeeee!

Following. Sorry, just started reading this this evening. We are also from Pittsburgh and are on the Escape next month so enjoying your review! Thanks so much for taking the time to write this.

Quick question for you since you’ve been on Getaway as well. Do you happen to know if the bartender Lilly from the Getaway (she was at OSheehans during the day and Headliners at night) is now on the Escape? We loved her and last time we were on the GA she thought she may be transferred to the Escape.

  8. Hi Sermenn1,

On our cruise last Sept we experienced the same thing. I ended up calling NCL and found out the following:

Out of our three cabins, two were ready for Edocs to be printed and one was not. I called and the rep, who was great, found that when the TA transmitted the final payment to NCL they transposed the digits of the cents portion and instead of 63 cents they typed 36 cents so it was showing I still owed 27 cents. She said I paid the correct amount but the data entry person put it in wrong. Long story short, she fixed it and I was then able to print my Edocs the next day. I'd advise you to call NCL to double check.

  9. On our Getaway cruise last Sept, there were 9 of us. Before we left, we decided on one excursion (Maya Chan) that we would all do, and all other excursions would be on our own. For dinner, we decided that we would gather at a certain time each day for dinner. Those who joined were welcomed and those who wanted to eat at a specialty restaurant or the buffet were free to do so. Shows were the same way. Breakfast and lunch were always on our own. It worked out very well for us. We have cruise several times with family and friends (up to 18 people) and have always done something like this. Never any problems !

    Good luck!

  10. Ive read that magnetic hooks are a good idea to keep our cabin tidy (ww are going to have four in a mini suite). Has anyone used magnetic hooks on norwegian escape? Are the walls metal?

While we haven't been on the Escape yet (46 days till we board her), we've been on Getaway twice and have used these hooks from Amazon

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01B5NSGSI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501565967&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=6pc+ALAZCO+Magnetic+Hooks&dpPl=1&dpID=41IkpWBvcGL&ref=plSrch

There are 3 different sizes and they all held very nicely. The large ones each held 25 pounds. I would hang my backpack with camera and other stuff in it on one and my wife used the other for her purse. On the Getaway one wall was steel (could use the magnet) and the opposite was not.

As suggested above, we have also used the collapsible travel cubes in the closet for additional space. These all helped immensely when we had 3 or 4 in a Cabin, but still helped when just DW and I.

  11. Although it is a perk for plat plus, I believe they do still have the drawing for all guests to participate in, at least based on the dailies from Escape a couple weeks ago. I definitely plan on entering for my Escape cruise in September.

  12. After checking out our photos in the gallery,, purchasing some knick knacks and souvenirs at the gift shop, debating the merits of purchasing a $6 can on Pringles, we headed up to the buffet for some late night snack, then headed to bed. Our towel animal tonight left room for debate. Help me out, Cruise Critic. What is this? And please be right (aka agree with me).

    photo%201_50.jpg

We've had something like that little guy as well and my wife and I have had the same "disagreement." We came to the conclusion that when you look at it from the side it looks like a dinosaur (brontosaurus) but when looking at it from the front it looked like a cobra.

  13. Awesome review! Did you take pics of the current menus? I would especially love to see the MDR dinner menus, since CruiseLifeRick didn't post those on his review. Going on the Escape in December for our honeymoon and can't wait!!

If he didn't, I saw that shadowmeboy was just on Escape and he posted menus as well as the Dailies. Here is the link:

  14. My wife regularly accused me of having slipped someone a $100 bill when she wasn't looking, but I assured her that hosting the meet & greet must have been the reason for the favorable treatment we received. It was more than generous for doing something that I really rather enjoyed!

Enjoy your time on the Escape!! Time on that aft balcony will be time well spent!

I agree! I wasn't expecting anything for organizing it and really enjoyed doing it.

  15. Really enjoying your pictures. We will be on Escape in Sept for our anniversary. We've been on Getaway twice and love it so hoping we love the Escape just as much.

By the way, we, too, love sailing out of Vancouver and Miami.

Can't wait for the rest of your review. Thanks again for the great pictures.

  16. Yesterday was the 100 day mark and the first day we could add the thermal spa package to our cruise. I signed on and was surprised to see it still was not an option for us to purchase. I signed on today and it was finally shown as an option for purchase. When I clicked on the link to add it, I got a message that they were no longer available. Could they have sold out already? Or is something wrong? Thanks for any info.

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

We just hit the 90 day mark yesterday and I was able to book the thermal suite pass for DW and I. I did get the same message that you mention at first, but realized that I had accidentally clicked on one of the days on the left hand column. Once I clicked the clear button, I was able to book it.

Another thing that I noticed was that the web states that if you buy online you save $20 and it charged us $199 each. However, I saw that on one of the Freestyle Dailies for the Escape I found on CC, it lists the onboard price at $246. Not sure if that includes something else but it is definitely cheaper if you purchase online beforehand, whether $20 or $47!

    Have a great cruise!

    John

  17. We were on the Escape and had rooms 12908 and 12910. Never had problems with soot or anything else.. However; If possible, I would recommend to move to an aft balcony on deck 12 or 9. These are the largest balconies with deck 13 being the smallest. We have the same two rooms September 30, 2017 we liked them so much.

Glad to hear you like 12908 bond24seven. We will be on the Escape two weeks before you in that room. We always get a balcony but this is our first aft balcony. Booked our dining and entertainment today since we are now 90 days out! We can't wait!

  18. There is a spreadsheet that I found a while back for the Away ships that has all of the cabin info as well as a bunch of photos. It is located here:

  19. 1) Can the 250 internet minutes be divided on 2 devices in the same cabin or must they all be used on the same device. Booking shows they are credited to only me.

Since your booking shows your name for the Internet Credit be sure to use your name when logging in/registering for the first time. Somehow on our last one it was in my wife's name and not thinking I registered the internet under my name since I'd be using it. They ended up charging us and then we had to go to guest services who sent us to the Internet manager who took a while to fix the issue then back to guest services. It was a bit of a pain but mostly just aggravating waiting in line because of my own stupidity.

  20. First question is, what airport are you flying out of, MIA or FLL?

It is impossible to tour around Miami AND Ft. Lauderdale within your timeframe of 5 hours. The cities are 25 miles apart (45 mins - 1+ hours) and traffic in either direction is heavy, even on weekends, if there is an accident on I-95.

If you're flying out of MIA ... here are some suggestions:

Sights to see in and around the greater Miami area are very spread out. Is there anyway that you can forgo the rental van and take the HOHO bus? I know this is not the least expensive option, but various cruise lines offer the HOHO excursion from your ship, with an airport drop-off (luggage stored either on the bus or sent to the airport through the luggage valet). This way, your party of 7 can be driven around without the stress of finding your way around town, parking, etc., and will definitely see all the highlights of the area. The route also includes a stop on South Beach.

There really is no "tour trail", but if the HOHO bus is not an option, you could look at the route online and drive the same route as the bus takes.

One other suggestion is to keep the van and go to South Beach for the day and have a leisurely lunch somewhere. You could park near Lincoln Road, where there is a plethora of restaurants. Understood there are some limitations with mobility, but many places are not far from the parking garages.

Now if you're flying from FLL ... You could head straight to Las Olas Blvd for lunch/shopping. There would not be enough time for the water taxi.

Thank you for the suggestions. We are flying out of FLL. We probably won't do shopping at Las Olas but is it a good place to just people watch for several hours and grab a bite to eat? Otherwise we may take your advice and just follow the HOHO map to see some of the sites.

  21. We will be renting a van after disembarking the Getaway. We have 5 hours before we need to be at the airport. There are 7 of us from 35-84. Since a couple have bad knees and hips, we cannot do a walking tour, but would like to drive around and see the sights Miami and Ft Lauderdale have to offer. Are there any set "tour trails" in the area? What are the "can't miss" attractions or sights. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    John
