  1. I think my ULU knife I bought in Alaska is the best souvenir I got there. It is unique (though a hunter friend told me it's like a knife he uses) to me' date=' and I use it several times a week in my kitchen.

My mom didn't get one when she was there, and asked me to pick one up for when we later went. My second trip I bought several for Christmas gifts after I found mine so useful. Again, look for one that is made in Alaska. I bought mine at our last stop, which now I don't remember which port was last.

We found that the last sea day of the cruise there were vendors on the ship selling them in the atrium area, but I don't know if they are made in Alaska, or cheap ones from China![/quote']

Can you please explain what a ULU knife is

  2. After seeing this post re Luxury Train Car excursion, I called Chilkoot Tours whom I have a Yukon Rail & Bus tour already booked with. They informed me that this Luxury Train Car Tour is only available through the cruise lines. Not sure if I had of known about this option before booking with Chilkoot whether it would have made a difference. Not only is it approx $130.00 U.S. ($160.00 Can) pp more, but the tour itself is 3 hours shorter. with no lunch provided, just snacks and beverages, and no time to see the huskie pups etc.

  3. Have been doing a lot of research through CC regarding Sight Seeing Flights over the Misty Fjords while we are in Ketchikan in August. I am looking at Island Wings and also Family Air as two possible venues. Family Air has a 4 pax Cessna which makes me a bit concerned about turbulance in the smaller plane. Would that be an issue for a smaller plane? Both companies have great reviews on Trip Advisor but would love to hear from anyone through CC that has some insight.

  4. We are doing an Alaskan cruise with HAL in August. Would like to do a flight seeing trip while in either Ketchikan or Juneau. Tours seem to be quite expensive so want to get as much bang for our buck but safety is also of great importance. We prefer to book excursions privately so as to support the local businesses and usually get a smaller group to tour with. Not sure whether to go the float plane route or helicopter.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  5. We have a cruise booked with HAL in August and would love to do a flightseeing tour in one of these ports (Ketchican or Juneau). Does anyone have any thoughts or advice as to which port is the better choice and which company to use. Are we better to stick with the cruise excursions. We usually book privately so as to support the local businesses while in port and most times go with a smaller group (although I don't think that will be the case for a flightseeing tour). Should we be looking at a helicopter tour or a float plane?

Thanks for any help you can throw our way:D
