1. I've just done a little research, and the paranoid side of me sees two problems. Apparently the $4.99 pass does not beep to tell you that the information has been read as you go through the toll booth; I would feel more comfortable if there were a way to test it to make sure that the toll has been registered.

Second problem -- it appears that these things really stick, and could be hard to remove. I'm not sure how much time we are willing to spend scraping and washing the inside of the windshield at the end of our holiday and before boarding our plane (and we don't want to be charged for "damage" to the vehicle).

Can anyone confirm that these cashless tolls have only been introduced from Miami down towards the Keys? Thanks.

Good points. I hope someone confirms for you. We are driving north from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando. I think the tolls we may encounter are mostly in Orlando. If there are no cashless tolls there, we will just pay at the booth and decline the 6.99 pd charge on the rental. More research is needed! :)

  2. one note here

this transponder is the type that gets glued to the windshield, so I'm guessing it is a one time use sort of thing. The instructions with the device say it won't work unless glued to the windshield and looking at mine I think it will be destroyed when it is removed. The older $20 model is still sold as well, and this one attaches to the windshield with suction cups and can be used in multiple vehicles. But you don't get for "free" like the Sun Pass Mini

    https://www.sunpass.com/sunPassRetailers

you can also buy via the website and have it mailed to you b4 you go.

The portable transponders are now $25.00. I guess there is nothing stopping you from getting the $4.99 one and then removing it from a rental car. Does anyone see a problem with this? The SunPass site says you can use a portable transponder in a rental, but doesn't address the permanent type.

You are right though Captain BJ, the glued type WILL be destroyed when removed. The rental car companies want to charge $6.99/day. It would be nice if these transponders were uniform nation wide. We have EZPass here in the Northeast.

  3. Sounds like you got ripped off by your rental car agency! They initially send a bill if you pass over the cashless road without a transponder, but if you ignore it, the fines start to kick in. Should never be so much to start. Thanks for the heads up!

Here's a USA today article about the cashless toll roads and one about the rental car companies (though this was not in Florida), ripping off customers.

  4. Hello, Fellow RI Cruisers here, going to Destiny Jan 24th

HiYa P&J We did Destiny a couple of years ago, to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay and Nassau..it was a nice cruise.

This one, we are going Southern Caribbean, so no worries about it being warm enough, even if it's chilly in Florida. :)

As a New Englander, I've always found the water just fine for swimming and snorkeling in the winter months.

  5.
We will be going to HMC next year and my husband wants to fish while we're on our cruise. My pvp from Carnival said that he could bring his own gear and shore fish without a permit here. Wondering if anyone has done this and if so, where on the island would he need to go to be out of others way of their activities.
There is a lagoon where the jet skis sit which is away from most of the people and might make a nice fishing spot. It's a short walk from the beach.
  6.
Laugh if you would like, but we bought a clamshell that we plan to take. Paid $15 for it, so figured if we used it at HMC and GT it would have more than paid for itself. It fits in a small carrying case. We also have our own snorkel gear that we plan to take. There's nothing wrong with owning your own "stuff" and using your money on other things you might enjoy - or saving it for a rainy day!
I usually pack a spring float, so I agree! It fits in the bottom of my suitcase, weighs almost nothing and I use it a lot. :)
  7. I love HMC! :)

Here's a little video I took when there on Carnival Destiny in Feb of '09...we were in the very last cabana, Violet or #15 (I think!)

  8. Yes the famous Moutaintop Banana Daiquiri spot in St. Thomas - we were there in Dec 2007 and were so sad when we heard it burnt down!!! Also wondering if any recent cruisers can report back on status? Were they going to rebuild it?

We were recently on Oasis and took a tour with Papa Bear. They are not planning on rebuilding Mountain Top. The new home of the Banana Daiquiri is The Great House. It is just a bit lower on the same mountain as Mountaintop was. Beautiful views and of course, delicious banana daiquiri's. :)

  10. Can anyone give a little more info on these? During a 3-4 hour period what would a tour consist of? Is there specific sites that most of the guides take you to? Do you exit the taxi and get to wander around the site or do you remain in the taxi for the better part of the tour?

How many people can go in one vehicle? I understand there are cars and there are vans!

    Any comments, help is appreciated!

We did a 4 hour taxi tour on our Explorer cruise. We just walked off the ship, found a driver with a blue flag in his windshield and asked aobut a tour. His was a mini van taxi. The driver (John Warwick), showed us the route on a map. He took us to the popular spots and a few off the beaten path stops. Also, we asked him to stop a time or two and he did gladly.

We visited the smallest church, Gibbs Hill and Lighthouse, the Aquarium (we didn't go in, but the outside area is beautiful) and our favorite spot along the route, the Palm Grove Gardens. At some spots, (smallest church, Gibbs) we were there with many others on taxi's tours. Some spots we were the only ones there (Palm Grove). We also drove through Hamilton, stopping at the beautiful cathedral at our request. We visited Tucker's Point hotel with the wonderful views there and were able to check out all the beautiful public spaces here. We drove all over the island, with the exception of the St. George's area. Our driver dropped us off at Horseshoe Bay Beach as we requested, though he would have taken us back to the ship otherwise.

With all our stops, we got out and wandered around for a bit.

The price quoted was $50 per hour for up to 4 people.

  11. Ok.

Just got off the ship and felt compelled to write about this. LOL ..now I am stealing secrets...I didn't discover these but I thought I would put them all together....

Aft Deck 11 and 12....Go to the end of the hallway...either side...and you will get to the decks above the aqua class suites....AMAZING views and always EMPTY!!!!!

There are public areas aft on deck 7 and 14 too. We sat on Deck 7, one deck up from the theater for the Aqua Theater show. Great views from here. Don't sit in the first three rows at this show unless you are ok with getting a little wet. ;)
