  1. I’m a bit baffled by the suggestions to keep pressing or escalating with Princess. Play the logic out - say for some reason Princess agrees to give the OP credit for their future cruise. Now, everyone who didn’t get insurance will expect to be treated as though they HAD insurance because of the precedent set in this example. It’s a financial paradigm that no business would (or should) employ. If you can’t afford to “self-insure” your vacation then the math is clear: no insurance = your financial loss, not Princess. If your house burned down, and you didn’t have homeowner’s insurance, would you file a claim and expect to be covered? Again, apologies if this sounds harsh.

Not harsh.....reality! Particularly since the OP has purchased insurance in the past, I doubt Princess will have sympathy. Once they start making exceptions, they open up a can of worms. A tough lesson to learn for sure.

Hoping for a successful surgery and full recovery for your husband!

  2. Doing this cruise out of SF right now (enjoying the Crab Shack as I type). Lectures about tbd islands, about wildlife and flowers, ocean life, food and classes on lei making and ukelele classes have been excellent and fun. Brian and Rowena are excellent ambassadors of the islands. Plenty of activities and plenty of rest time before we get to the islands.

  3. On the grand right now another day out from Hilo. We think shes in good shape. Haven't noticed much that qould point to it not being well maintained. She's older but still beautiful. The thing I noticed immediately is the smaller atrium.

I would not hesitate to sail her again.

    Aloha!!

  4. Going to Alaska again this summer and no didn't even look at Princess why because Bliss with some 20 restaurants and 20 bars with an observation lounge to boot sounds more intriguing....

Good for you. If that is what you are wanting, go for it. I would never consider cruising on NCL but that is my choice. I find the ships with Princess are just fine and meet what we want when we cruise. Don't need bling or gazillion restaurants or bars to be happy. If I want a theme park atmosphere, will go to a theme park. When I cruise, I want good service and relaxation. To each his own.

  5. The whole premise of this is that Princess should conform to what others are doing to be "edgy" or "game changing." Seems actually counter-intuitive to copy what others are doing to be game changing. The bottom line is, there is a variety from many different cruise lines - pick what you like and go on that cruise line. Bellyaching about a particular cruise line not being as good as another one is silly. If you like the other cruise line better, sail on it. Lots of us prefer Princess for what it is - a more traditional cruise experience that doesn't feel like a theme park.

    Bingo!

  6. Doesn't anyone else who has cruised for a while find that the new generation of mass market cruise ships--like Royal and Regal, both of which I have sailed on, are just too crowded? I've started doing more land based vacations because of this.

We were on the Regal in Jan 2017 for 2 weeks and we never felt like the ship was too crowded. At certain times and in certain locations, yes (the Princess theatre before a performance) but in general, it never felt crowded. It has been our opinion that the design of the newer ships has made for a less crowded feel, particularly in the Horizon Court were we felt the layout was the best of any ship we have been on.

  7. Good review. We are in the same boat (no pun). We used to sail Princess regularly and always enjoyed each cruise. But we also got tired of the large ships and moved on to the smaller Celebrity ships, Oceania and we just booked our first Viking Ocean. We have done several river cruises with them.

After reading so many positive reviews and comments about the Regal Princess we decided to return to Princess to check it out. We thought the ship was absolutely beautiful and the service was great. I didn’t notice a shortage of crew anywhere except in the MDR especially the hostess area. We had anytime Dining which is the only type we do on any line we sail. This is the only ship where we always had to wait to be seated. I felt their dining room organization was the worst! The hostess was so over worked and over whelmed, she was sullen and almost rude every night. The regal’s buffet is the worst, food was bland and the layout was confusing. I was very disappointed. Like you, we also enjoyed the Crown Grill but only ate there once. Getting a reservation took an act of Congress! I used to love Princess, but sadly I feel this will be our last time to sail with them also.

Interesting, your comments about the buffet on the Regal. I have seen mostly positive comments about it being one of the best buffets in both the set up and the food options. We cruised on the Regal in Jan 2017 and found the buffet to be excellent and chose to eat several dinners there as well as breakfast and lunch. Actually found it better than the MDR. Yours is one of the first comments I've read saying the Regal buffet was terrible and the layout confusing.

  8. In October on a Royal Princess transatlantic cruise we didn’t notice any decrease in MDR quality & choices...except for most of the beef courses. It didn’t appear to be due to the preparation but to the lower quality of beef. Also for years most of the lobster tails we’ve had in the MDR & CG haven’t been great either...mostly small with a rubbery texture. We had a good lobster tail on that cruise but that was during the wonderful Ultimate Balcony Dinner. Taste is subjective but this is what my tastebuds tell me. ;)

Now comes the new option to purchase better cuts of steak & possibly a better lobster tail. I think that a decline in most beef (in particular steaks & Prime Rib) has already occurred. And that some passengers may be willing to pay a nominal fee for the new MDR options.

That option has been available for years in the RCI & Carnival MDRs but it has not expanded to an ala carte menu. I haven’t sailed those cruise lines in several years so I don’t have an opinion about whether it’s resulted in a deterioration of their MDR food.

A recent post from the Regal after beginning implementation of Ocean Medallion shows photos of an expanded room service menu with more fee based items. Like the new MDR options & things such as Club Class some passengers are willing to pay additional for such things. That doesn’t include me & as long as such changes don’t negatively affect my cruise experience then it’s not a major issue for me.

Thanks for your reasonable response. Too many "the sky is falling" responses. It comes down to choices and if you are willing to pay to get better quality (isn't that what we are doing when we go to a specialty restaurant?), then you have that option, now in the MDR. If you aren't, then that is your choice. I don't believe the current quality of the MDR food is purposely being lowered to force people to pay for premium items. Food is subjective and seems plenty of people find the food in the MDR to be just fine while others think it is getting worse. I've been on 9 Princess cruises and I have found the food to be just fine and haven't noticed the quality going downhill. Once I do, it will be time to look at other cruise lines.

  9. Don't hesitate to cruise with your teens on Princess. We took our youngest son who on our very first Princess cruise when he was 16 and he loved spending his time in the Teen Club. He spent almost his entire time there on sea days and in ports spent the day with us but the evenings in the Teen Club. Yes, there aren't rock climbing walls and stuff, but he loved just being able to hang out with other teens, play video games and the various activities they had planned in the club each day.

  10. Aloha,

This is Tiki Dave, from Elua. I thought I might chime in on this topic.

While Leialoha and I are the couple that originated and developed the Hawaiian enrichment program, (sometimes called the Aloha Spirit Program) onboard Princess ships, (along with David Cole, who was a long time CD for Princess), Princess has made a concerted effort and commitment to have a couple onboard each ship that includes Hawai’i in its itinerary. Also, in many cases the non-Hawaiian, Polynesian itineraries will also have a couple onboard, even if it is only for a portion of the entire cruise.

Each of us adheres fairly closely to the program, and it will almost always include ukulele classes, hula classes, port talks, some form of presentation on language/local cuisine, music performances and lei making/Hawaiian crafting. We each put our own spin on things, for instance, Leialoha and I do a much more involved and expansive Hawaiian crafting class then the other couples. I have “tweaked” the issued port talks to more reflect my personality/knowledge and deliver it in a different style then the others might. Leialoha teaches different hulas then some of the other couples...you get the idea I’m sure. But, the idea is that no matter which couple you get, the experience should be complimentary to the itinerary and enhance your time onboard.

There has been a lot of discussion on these boards as to who is someone’s “favorite” or who is the “better” couple to have. While Leialoha and I are blessed and thankful to have many people who have commented favorably on our work throughout our history with Princess, (this past July was 12 years with the company) , I can say that no matter who is assigned to your particular ship, you can certainly enhance your trip and hopefully experience something new by attending the performances, presentations, lectures and classes. I think I can speak for all of the couples when I say that the primary focus of all the cultural ambassadors and the Princess enrichment programs is to share our love and “mana’o” (knowledge) of our islands with as many people as possible.

Lastly, I want to mention that besides the couples onboard, we are more often then not blessed with wonderful people who come onboard to give lectures and talks during these cruises. Many have Hawai’i specific topics, whether it is on Pearl Harbor, the voyages of Captain Cook, formation of the islands, volcanos, animals of Hawai’i, whales...there are many topics that have been covered in the past.

I know I have gone on a bit, but Leialoha and I are very passionate about this program, and always like to make sure people are aware of it, and have the correct information about. I know it may be redundant to say, but I truly believe that no matter which ship you choose, you will have an incredible time. After all, it’s Hawai’i...IMHO, one of the most amazing places in all of the world. Mahalo for your time.

    Aloha No,

Thank you so much for posting here and explaining what we can expect on our cruise to Hawaii. We leave on 1/22 on the Grand. While we will miss you, we are confident that whoever we have on the Grand will be great and we will learn a lot about Hawaiian culture! Just 2 weeks to go!

  11. I do not understand why what I think is the best ship for AK should have any effect on the best choice for the OP. Everyone has different selection parameters. In my case, ship size (minimum is best) and port flexibility (maximum is best) would be the deciding factor on an AK cruise. I don't care about ship amenities, entertainment, specialty restaurants, etc on most of my cruises but especially in AK, I regard the ship as a way of getting to the amazing places on land. It is basically a big bus.

My best AK cruise was on the Alaskan Dream which holds 50 passengers and has absolutely no amenities besides food and the ability to get into any port and the flexibility to alter the itinerary if there is something interesting out there. My second best AK cruises were on Alaska Marine Highway ferries since they get into many ports the the big ships do not touch and the people who go on them are really cool.

Does this mean that my choices would be best for the OP - definitely not. Would the OP probably like my best choices - definitely not. Does this mean that I personally think that the reasons that people pick specific ships to travel to AK on are really silly - definitely yes but the reasons they pick them are important to them. Does this mean that we should have an election to decide which ship the OP should cruise on - definitely no.

Sorry for the rant but I think that we all have to agree that none of us can really answer any "best of" question unless we know the person asking the question.

    DON

    Definitely a rant :)

The OP wanted opinions and we gave them. No harm in that and maybe one opinion matches with what the OP finds closely matches what they are looking for.

I don't think you can go wrong on any Princess ship doing Alaska. Princess does a great job in Alaska.

  12. We've done Alaska on the Coral and the Sapphire and both were outstanding experiences though the Coral is smaller (one of our favorites). To us, more important is the itinerary and it has to include Glacier Bay, period. We've done both Northbound and Southbound and I think we enjoyed the Southbound just a little better because the focus was on the glaciers at the beginning of the cruise.

I think no matter what Princess ship you choose, you will have a cruise of a lifetime! Can't wait to go back for the 3rd time!

  13. Princess "Grand" review/opinion

We are veteran Princess travelers - we just completed our 23 Princess cruise and our 5 times on the Grand - We first sailed her back in December of 1999 for the New Years cruise - Great time - She was just over a year old. In 2017 we sailed on her in September (10 day to Alaska) & just got off her last week from a 15 day to Hawaii.

While WE did not really experience any problems in our cabin - the ship Did have issues 'again'

I want to say up front - This is Not a complaint post but an 'advisory' post so others will be informed. I Really wish Princess would take a close look at the Grand from a passengers point of view. While on the ship in Sept and again in December - while at the Captains Circle meeting it was announced that the Number of 'First time Princess cruises on board' was in the area of 1300 passengers - You know the old saying ' you only get One chance to make a First Impression' So many people work so hard to save $$ to go on a life time cruise only to board a 20 year old ship with issues - For us after 23 times on Princess and 5 times on the Grand - I cut them some slack and the crew works Very hard to keep us happy.

On both trips in 2017 we heard from Many passengers about plumbing issues. On the Sept trip the very large lighting fixture in the Princess theater came down (thank God the theater was 99% empty and No injures - theater was Closed for a few days then we were told NO projection shows + the Voice of the Ocean would be canceled. - not a huge deal for us but those 'First time passengers?' in December - large flood (broken water line) in the Starboard side Buffet area - that side was Closed for almost have of the cruise - creating a traffic jamb in the Port Buffet. They did open the MDR for breakfast and Lunch - making the staff work even harder - again, not a huge issue for us but for those 'first time cruisers?' again in December - talked to several guests whose showers and or Toilets overflowed and caused issues AND the staff kinda blamed them for the problem - First time passengers????

At our Dinning table we had chairs that the seat cushion was so worn out that I sunk down?? LOL - had to change the chair several times until my waiter made sure it 'Stayed' away from our table - I managed but if I were a first time cruiser - WTH??

again on the December trip the Princess theater had issues and the Voice of the Ocean was canceled and turned into 'Pop challenge and moved to the 'Explores lounge' Were Many of those seats were also so worn out that you Sunk down, lol

Short people could only see the back of the person in next table, lol

I met with the future cruise person about some of these issues and they said - write the company "about all she could say" I feel the 'Company' knows very well the condition of the Grand and its all business - they make More money at sea than in dry dock repair. Now for those of you that post that the Grand was just in Dry dock a while back - Yes she was ONLY for a repaint of the hull - re-do of Sabatinies and movement of the wedding chapel and engine maintenance.

The water issue and FLOOD in December in the Buffet was either a sprinkler line or some other water line - of course we will NEVER get a straight answer to any issue like that.

I am a 35 year retired Firefighter and I am Well versed in Fire Sprinkler systems (all can be some what different) The ships system is a wet system (like most) and IF a line is damaged or broken - the System has to be SHUT down to repair - now that means the SYSTEM is out of service - Pray there is not a fire - NO sprinklers. If has been my experience when there is a high life issue and a system was shut down - we had an engine on scene until it was back up and running. This is rare but it happens..

I Loved the meals (Fish) in the MDR - wife not so much - it was more miss than hit for her.

For the record - we ate in the Crown Grill on night and it was GREAT - as it should - costing $60 extra.

I have been very Proud of Princess and promote cruising all the time - However, here on the West Coast and especially in San Francisco - I am reluctant to recommend the Grand without First giving a little 'heads up'

For us - I do not see us cruising on the Grand anytime in the near future

There is so much money to be made by Princess out of SF - I just with they would retire the Grand and move in a newer ship but I do not see the upper management agreeing with me on this topic

One very nice area on the Grand - we stayed in a basic Balcony and the new beds were GREAT - Love that part

    😪

This is very timely for us as we leave on the Grand on the 22nd to Hawaii. Frankly, I was hesitant to book this cruise because the Grand is getting old and our recent cruises have been on the newest ships (Regal and Reflection) and we absolutely loved both. I think the oldest ship we have been on was the Sapphire and that isn't all that old. But in the end, we decided that we really wanted to do Hawaii and we wanted to do it out of SF instead of LA. Additionally, having an Alfredo's was important to us as it is one of our favorite dining options.

Your review will help us to be prepared and we'll deal with whatever issues we may come upon. I'm pretty sure none of them will ruin this much anticipated cruise for us.

    Again, thanks for your review.

  14. Clearly plenty of people disagree with you and find the Princess product to be worth spending their vacation dollars on.

Again, it's great that we have options. No one is forcing you or anyone else to cruise with Princess. If you feel there are more cons than pros, then you have other choices. We continue to cruise Princess because we get what we are looking for in a vacation and have never been disappointed. We have also cruised on Celebrity and while a bit different experience, we get what we are looking for. Princess isn't perfect and we have experienced some of the same issues that have been brought up in this thread and others but none are enough to make us sour on Princess. We make adjustments so that the issues are easier to deal with and don't ruin our vacation.

I don't see the benefit of people like you who seem to post often in the Princess forums with the same gripes. Clearly this product is not for you so fine, spend your vacation dollars somewhere else and move on. If I got sour on Princess, I would just cruise other lines and move on, not constantly come to these forums to whine about why I don't like the product. And I certainly wouldn't go to other cruise line forums and tell people to never cruise Princess. Just because it might not be the right product for me doesn't mean it isn't a good product for everyone else. I don't assume to know what is best for everyone and can only share if it is best for me or not.

I should clarify that what I have said above is rhetorical, not necessarily directed at cruzsnooze since you made it clear that the cons aren't greater than the pros for you at this point. It is more in reference to some who seem to constantly complain about the Princess product and go as far as to try to warn everyone not to cruise with them, as if everyone would feel the same about the issues they complain about and therefore should take their advice to not cruise on Princess. We all have different tolerance levels and what may be an irritant to some isn't for others.

As for the OP, I was fine with most of the issues brought up. What put the whole thing in perspective for me was the complaint that Princess did not refund the medical cost which just isn't reasonable. We have experienced some of the issues the OP has (though we always do traditional dining so haven't had the experiences with AnyTime and we haven't been on the Island which does seem to have many issues in the opinion of most that post here) but we just make adjustments to our expectations and how we handle, for example, getting to a show we really want to watch. All the issues mentioned to us would be very minor and we would work around those to continue to enjoy our vacation.

  15. Your suggestions are to Princess' advantage NOT mine, the paying customer. I eat when I want and what fits my schedule, that's what is supposed to be a VACATION. I also would NEVER eat dinner at the Horizon court, I want a sit down serviced dinner. If Princess can't fix some of the problems they will loose customers, people have choices where to spend their vacation dollars. Princess is the one making promises about their cruises that they can't deliver. Keep in mind we are customers of a service. So far the cons have not outweighted the Pro's for me but I do cruise with other lines and look at other lines frequently.

One thing I prefer about RCL is the reserved seating for their D+ and higher tier guests which I take advantage of.

Clearly plenty of people disagree with you and find the Princess product to be worth spending their vacation dollars on.

Again, it's great that we have options. No one is forcing you or anyone else to cruise with Princess. If you feel there are more cons than pros, then you have other choices. 16. I don't understand rants, of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to carry over to other sections is over the top IMO. I've been cruising a long time, and when I see complaints about lines, dining times, seats in the theater, I think big picture. I'm not alone, I'm going to be cruising with 1,000 - 3,000+ people and I need to arrange my time, what I expect and want to do accordingly. Life isn't only about me and on vacation one needs to think about, why we do it in the first place - to R - E - L - A - X!

Most of the rant was over minor things that you just make adjustments to deal with but what made me really question the OPs drivel was expecting Princess to reimburse them for the medical cost when it wasn't Princess' fault for the injury. At that point, I realized that this was the type of person that would do exactly what they did, go try to warn the world to not cruise with Princess. Not surprised at all by the OP's actions.

Though the minor complaints can happen on any ship or line, thankfully we do have choices. The OP can go cruise with someone else and Princess has one less whiner.

  17. Depends on if the ship is more important to you or the itinerary. We have been on the Reflection (sister ship) twice and really love that class of ship. We have also been on the Coral which is the sister ship to the Island though the Island went through changes that the Coral has not that haven't been too well received. But if itinerary is more important (would be for me) and you haven't done the Panama Canal, then do the Panama Canal. If ship is more important, then I would do the Silhouette.

Enjoy the cruise, which ever you decide on!

  18. Hi y'all, RedneckBob hear !

Me and the misses, Thelma, just completed our first Hawaiiin cruise and our first cruise on Princess; usually sale on HAL or Oceania. We chose to go on one of those boats that is named from a precious and erotic stones; not Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald but RUBY !

I guess if Princess decides to go to one of those low budget cruise ship it would be called the Cubic Zirconia Princess.

Well, back to our experience. This was the largest boat we had ever been on; over 3000 passengers; more people than in the town I grew up in in southern Alabama. We were traveling with friends from the LA area (Los Angeles), Fred and Ethel. They had suggested this cruise.

Embarking: We got on the boat in a place called San Pedro and boy were there a lot of people in the terminal; I would estimate over 1000 ready to board. We waited over an hour and a half before we got on the boat and went right to our cabin.

Cabin: We had one of those mini suites. Don't know why it's called that. Doesn't sound luxurious. I mean I heard of a mini Cooper and a mini mouse and a mini me but a mini suite. Hal calls their smaller suites Vista or Signature and Oceania called them Penthouse; now that sounds like an upgrade; not mini. Maybe it should be called the Two TV Suite. That's right two tv's. I got to watch the NFL playoff games on one TV while Thelma watched on Channel 22 those Love Boat TV reruns. It was great until she hit the mute button or changed channels; my TV also would change. But as a whole it was a great cabin.

Food and Service: After checking out the cabin we went to the Horizon for lunch. Now that was something different. We had to get in line to enter the food area; kind of reminded me of our pig pen back on the farm; only one way in and one way out and feeding troughs everyway. And boy was it crowded. As you entered the pen I mean food area there was this nice lady passing out serving platters that I found out were actually plates. I told Thelma we could use one of these plates to serve our 25 LB turkey each year at Thanksgiving. Boy, don't go on a diet on this boat.

The food was good and best service ever on a cruise. Our waiter in the MDR was Peter from Europe. He was excellent. I found it interesting that rolls were not put on the table in a basket due to waste but don't hold back on those serving platters at the Horizon and the food wasted. I asked Peter if he was married or had a girl friend. He replied in one of those European/Aristocratic voices, "RedneckBob, he called me by my first name, I have a woman in every port"! WOW, that sounded great to me except Thelma noticed my delight so I kinder withdrew from that topic.

Entertainment: This was great but way too many people; had to get to show 30-40 minutes early to get a seat. We had one of those comedian perform and upset Thelma a lot. The comedian said that it was amazing how these young women get tattoos all over there bodies. Just the other day on the boat he saw a young women with a pretty rose tattoo on her breast (Thelma had one of those too). He said, don't that girl know in 25-30 years that will be a long stem rose  ! Thelma began too cry. I said don't worry Thelma; we will get some new implants and it will look like a dozen roses :D !

As far as other entertainment, we played cards with our friends, Fred & Ethel every day; card game called "Up and Down the River". The way I played it should be called "Up The Creek Without a Paddle". Princess used the Crown Grill Restaurant for playing games and it was great.

    Ports of Call:

Hilo: first stop on our trip and I was looking to go see the volcano as long as it was not erupting; guarantee there was no virgin on this ship to sacrifice at the volcano if it was erupting. Well, we got off the boat and went in the terminal and I asked where is the bus to the volcano. Someone inside said right outside. So we went outside and there was this huge line waiting for the bus. After 20 minutes the bus arrived and we headed out but 15 minutes later do you know we were in front of Walmart ! We got on the wrong bus ! So we decided to go in and by the time we got back to the bus to take us back to the ship we had bought so much the bus driver had to open the storage compartment under the seats to store our stuff.

Honolulu: We decided to go to a place called Wack-a-Key Beach; very strange name for a beach. Took the city bus their. It was great. Found an open air market sailing tee shirts; 9 shirts for $21.99; what a deal. Got the shirts and when I was ready to check out, the sales clerk said those prices were for small and medium; your size would be $15 each. Well I be dogged ! Maybe it had something to do with with my t shirt size; same roman numerals as next years Super Bowl :D !

Maui: Another great place. We took one of those tenders from the boat to the port. Then I walked and walked and walked and walked (kinder sounds like Forrest Gump), and do you know we ended up at Bubba Gump's Restaurant. It was great.

Overall it was a great cruise but way too many people. We will stick to those smaller ships.

I'm RedneckBob and I see it like a tell it, I mean tell it like I see it.

(The names have been changed to protect the innocent)

You sound like someone that would be fun to cruise with! Love your humor and clearly you wouldn't let the little things ruin your vacation. Our kind of people! Thanks for your very enjoyable review!

  19. I totally agree with the original poster, we are elite and sailed over 26 cruises and are going on the Ruby Jan. 31 for three back to backs, I will totally agree to all of the posters comments been there and done that, and am getting tired of everyone who seems to be happy with sailing on Princess, and yes we have the same concerns about the original poster. My opinion is that so many people posting on here are full of it

Have you taken a look in the mirror lately?!

You're tired of everyone who seems happy to sail with Princess?! Why are you sailing with Princess if you are not happy with them? People shouldn't be happy sailing on Princess?! What a weird post. And then just because people are happy sailing with Princess they are full of it?!

  20. Wow! Why would you expect the cruise line to be responsible for your husbands injury?! Stuff happens and people do at times get injured. So, Princess should refund the cost of getting care due to an injury caused by another passenger or passengers?!

There isn't a cruise line around that would refund medical expenses for an injury due to hurting ones foot. But go ahead and see if that works for you on another cruise line.

  21. If it is so hated was it it always so full when events are held there? We have attended many events there.

I haven't been reading much on these forums but I did not know there was a lot of negative comments about Princess Live! We actually loved that there was a place set aside for shows and trivia and we really enjoyed the events in Princess Live on the Regal this past January. And it was almost always standing room only so we always made sure to get there early. And there is a bar just outside of Princess Live to easily access drinks.
