Cartagena on panama canal cruise: give me your tips and safety takes!
3ric replied to 3ric's topic in Windstar Cruises
oh and i amalso wondering about the group size on the city excursions! -
hi, i am booked on the panama canal and cartagena cruise in february. For those who have gone to cartagena, do you have tips? was there safety concerns? did you feel comfortable touring the old town on your own?did you do the evening excursion? how far was the port where you docked from old tpwn? costs of taxis? anything you can share about your experience is appreciated!

Intetesting! it is quite confusing .. they state they had free excursions/tours every day but that is not mentioned anywhere on the site or brochure. the website mentions 2 free excursions only in the itinerary.
-
Nevermind! I just realized that I can get a 500mb plan for the sea days and use my phone when docked by land.

HI all, First windstar cruise, I have only been on ponant and did not realize wifi was not included. Given I will be docking 2 days in cartagena and doing the panama canal, I am wondering if it is doable to get away with an international data plan vs paying the $35/day for wifi? Anyone has experience with this? I have heard the wifi was terrible on board too. I would want to email/ text through messaging apps/browse but not stream or anything like that. Video calls would be a plus too. note: I do not want to purchase the all inclusive package as i do not drink.

Norwegian Jade: Vancouver to whittier: port or starboard?
3ric replied to 3ric's topic in Norwegian Cruise Line
Thanks I get that, but I also know some of the best views can be seen in the morning or evening and I am not particularly social and know I will be in my cabin a fair bit, so I would like to know which side will allow me to see the most of the views/coastlines -
HI all, looking to not make a mistake in booking a balcony cabin for this one way trip, northbound. I am hearing that both sides are good but seeing very few starboard cabin still available, so I am assuming they are better (vs port) I know several people love aft for Alaska but that is not an option we are considering. So what do each side bring to the table? Thanks!

First timer Coral Princess for Alaska What to expect for shows?
3ric replied to 3ric's topic in Princess Cruises
thanks, so basically no more than 2 show a cruise and then other nights have other options? -
I am looking at Coral Princess and Norwegian Jade for Alaska. Everyone seems to agree that Princess is best for Alaska. I am trying to understand what to expect schedule wise for entertainment. Is there a broadway style or other show every night or is it just a couple nights a week? I keep looking around but cant seem to find info about this.

i second becky, i wouldnt worry about this. i am a very anxious (medically) traveler and i didnt bother. i get bit first anywhwere and i dont belive i got one bit. i was wearing similar outfit as becky :-). highly suggest leaving any sense of fashion behind and think practiacl. the people in short and tanks regretted not having a long sleeve linen shirt and long pants to tuck in shoes. dont let this deter you from the trip, it was great! and i went over thanksgiving so i probably had more mosquitoes
-
just to clarify the mosquitos were present when we went into jungle like environnment. so short hikes or when we visited a couple of the villages. no mosquitos while on the beach, dining on the boat, etc..
-
I did not. There is the doc office on board, although it probably would not be the worse idea. But you should definitely take A LOT of mosquito spray. the stuff you put on under your clothes. They were all over almost every single excursion. the staff had spray but it is much better to have it with you.

i mean cruisetour. i am not overly concerned about the land tour part around them fitting in. i would imagine holland may be better on the land part, but i havent reviewed all in details. Mckinley resort seems nice and the experience Holland has in alaska is reassuring. Pricing is pretty much the same. definitely looking at one way, land first. likely from vancouver, 4 days land tour. Looking at august as thsts the initial date of the ncl tour they are looking but i would prefer to go late May.

Thanks, yeah i thought about reviewing the thread about dress code but I find it a bit reductive. Sometimes it is also about the "feel" of the cruise. and the clientele. It is hard to put a finger on it just from the dress code. Some cruises have similar dress codes but different range of people and clientele.

Hi all, My extended family is looking at an alaska cruisetour with Norwegian on Norwegian Jade. Most of them are older adults( 60+ couples), no kids or if so adult kids, likely small group of 5 to 10 cabins. Many are not experienced travelers, some have not really been on vacation for a decade+, and may frown upon too fancy food, dressing up/galas or getting too far out of their comfort zone. They are a fun bunch and they are definitely excited at the prospect of an Alaska cruise. I have looked into the pricing they are getting and what lines are best for alaska, and it definitely seems everyone that Holland (or Princess) is better when it comes to the itineraries, port access, viewing glacier bay,etc.. The family is also excited about all the shows and other activies on board but dont need the slides or go cart/kid friendly stuff so it seems holland would be good too.I would guess they would be just fine with few kids on board :-) I can get them on Holland for the same price as what they were quoted for Norwegian but I want to be mindful of them feeling comfortable and the experience matching their needs/wants, without letting my personal preference muddy the waters. I am hoping someone can speak to the dress code and fanciness of holland Alaska. My only experience so far is with ponant expedition (though I am booked with emerald soon) and I want to make sure I am not steering them wrong. As anyone here on been on both ships? Can you describe the feel on Holland Alaska boat. Jeans and shorts ok during dinner? at least in some areas or will they consistenly feel obligated to dress up?

Hi all, Family member wants to book a 12 day alaska land plus cruise tour through Premier World Discovery tours and a local event. I have looked into the pricing and it is really high compared to what is offered through a TA or Norwegian own website./ I have never heard of the company but they seems to be a tour operator for most land tours. Their itinerary seems really close to the 13 days Norwegian offers. I have never done pre cruise trips, Can anyone speak to this? The price different is at least 25%.
-
yeah, both gauguin and ponant have frequent offers with no single supplements, that was definitely the case on my boat. I wonder if one could get ajoining cabins if traveling together. Ponant cabins are very well designed but on the small side

hi,did you end up booking? i am booked on that trip in March 2025, looking for people who have been on that trip to better understand activities offered, and how much snorkeling/water activities we will be able to do
-
anyone been on Emrrald yet? I am bookedfor the eastern carribean cruise next spring and would like to hear from someone who can share how the activities went and was worthwhile or not. Looking to do mostly snorkeling.
