  1. I usually like to take photos of the empty rooms (lounges, dining rooms, theater) on the first day, when most people are still boarding. Less people traffic in those rooms during that time.

If the doors are still closed for the theater or dining rooms on that first day, I still go in and take pictures. However, if the fire doors are in place, then I wouldn't attempt to enter those areas of course.

I call this the "exploration" stage of my cruise :)

Be aware of high humidity and your camera lenses. Since you're a photographer, I'm sure you already know that.

Keep your camera with you when you board the cruise ship (instead of storing it in your luggage. Though that's risky in itself). You won't get your luggage until much later in the evening.

  2. I took a Eastern Caribbean cruise in Sept 2015 and we missed an incoming potential hurricane by one day. Fortunately, we left port one day before a hurricane was arriving. And fortunately, for FL residents, the hurricane got downsized and ended up being just a bad storm.

But the seas were rougher than usual on the first evening. The captain eventually worked his way around it and the rest of the cruise was smooth sailing.

Even though I'm a veteran cruiser, it was the first time I had to worry about a potential hurricane affecting my cruise. I sure read up and followed hurricane news the week beforehand. In the end, everyone on here is correct. You just never know. It's unpredictable.

  3. I always try to catch one sunrise as well

But for the most part, when I'm on a cruise, my sleep schedule usually is 1 AM to 7 AM

If I feel like I need a nap during the day, I usually take one right before 6 PM dinner (so I basically shower and change for dinner around 5 PM, take a nap in-between, then straight to dinner). If I take a nap at any other time, I feel like I'm wasting time on a cruise!
