Wow, my cruise is Vista Aug 28th and although myself and daughter are vaccinated my 4 yr old granddaughter is not able. This is heartbreaking as I'll have to cancel, lose $650 OBC. Ugh

I wouldn't cancel your cruise.  The CDC has stated approval for the vaccine for kids under 12 won't be until the fall.  They also stated the chances of kids spreading the virus is very slim.  I would think the ccruise lines will take that into consideration.

Why do we continue to allow "Status" to matter? The purpose of your success is to always pay it forward. How about introducing new family members and friends to our Cruising World. Then as a real "Platinum" gesture pay for their initial voyages. That's much more important than who gets to their 'Suites" first as none of us are leaving until the Captain says " Let's Go".

I'm a Plat but have never been in a suite.  Regardless, I don't care about the baggage thang.  It isn't like I'm pacing my cabin waiting breathlessly for them to arrive.   I'm usually on the Lido eating as soon as we board.  I do like the "VIP" line but my life will continue if they do away with it.  But, they better not do away with my free laundry!

Didn't Ken retire in the last year or so?

While he was/is a good maitre d' ,so are others on Carnival. Unless you have a special request, or need to change up dining plans early, most cruisers never interact with one.

I did a quick Google search and it seems he retired and now lives in his native Ireland.

I’m with you on this.  We are not smokers and hate having our balcony filled with smoke.  We also booked an aft balcony for our August Alaska cruise and hope the smoking area on deck 3 is not near us (We are on deck 4).

I'm not a smoker but I'm amazed your balcony would fill with smoke on a moving ship.

  5. Our next cruise is in March of 2022 and I'm hoping the COVID drama  is but a distant memory by then.  If it isn't I would be OK with most of the proposed requirements except for having to take Carnival sponsored excursions in order to get off the ship.  I don't have a major thing against Carnival's excursions but there are ports where we like to wander around on our own.

I am likely in the minority, but having Carnival leave San Diego again now puts them at the absolute bottom of cruiselines that I would consider in the future.  I would not rule out sailing on Carnival, but being a native San Diegan, it irritates me that they left the first time for Los Angeles and now a second time.

If recollection serves, Carnival put pressure on San Diego to add more and updated port space.  San Diego did that, spending millions to drastically change the Broadway pier.  Then, after SD did this, CCL pulled out, leaving the Broadway pier as a glorified spot to hold outdoor parties and such.

While this is not directly related, our former football team, the Chargers, pressured the city for a stadium expansion, which they got, then a new stadium before abandoning us for L.A.

I will guarantee that I'm not the only person who feels this way.  SD isn't nearly as large as L.A., but it is the 5th largest county in the USA with a population of roughly 3,400,000 residents.  I think a business has to consider whether or not they irritate a lot of residents before they make these moves.  Plus, as I mentioned before, SD is a heck of a lot more beautiful and interesting place to sail from versus Los Angeles.

Here is the port of San Diego versus the port of Long Beach (L.A.).  Take your pick.  Which port would you like to visit?

I couldn't agree more but to be fair, the picture of LA's port appears to be San Pedro not Long Beach.  Regardless, I still have family in San Diego and cruising out of that port, in my case, sure beats sailing out of LB or San Pedro.  Like you, I would look at the other lines sailing out of San Diego before considering Carnival.

  7. I lived in San Diego for over 35 years and have sailed out of that port and also Long Beach.  I've never understood why Carnival would choose to home port out of Long Beach over San Diego.  I would guess the proximity to Disneyland would be a major draw but there is no comparison to the beauty of San Diego as it cruises down the bay, past Point Loma and out to the ocean.

Everyone is wanting to be first. Makes me sick to see politicians pushing to the front of the line. It would be a death sentence for my dad at 102 and a pacemaker and high blood pressure.

The politicians should be on the tail-end of the line.  For the most part, they are the least important (both parties).  Florida still doesn't have a consistent supply of the vaccine.  Every once in awhile, I get an alert that a thousand doses have arrived but within 10 minutes they're all spoken for.

  9. I should add that most, if not all, Carnival cruises feature a group in the main lobby every night who play violins.  I could literally sit there all night to listen to them.  We would normally sit there before dinner and have drinks and then head off to the dining room (we use "Anytime Dining" on all of our cruises).  Also, Carnival ship classes Dream and Vista (Horizon is in that class) have Cove balconies that we really enjoy.  My wife tends to get a bit seasick so she prefers an Outside cabin on a lower deck and as much in the middle as possible.  I like balconies so a Cove is a great compromise.  All are on Deck 2 and we always manage to snag an amidships cabin.  Great being that close to the water!

  10. I quit bringing suits or sports coats on cruises a long time ago.  On the "formal" nights I wear Docker slacks with a buttoned, long sleeve shirt.  On our Horizon cruise last year, it seemed most men wore something along those lines.  You don't say what date in September your cruise is but the closer you get to October, the fewer the kids (school).  We enjoyed the Horizon, had fun and ate well.  Super impressed with the dining staff.  I know you'll have a blast!

  11. I suspect the lines are going to require you to have a so-called "vaccine passport."  The very last thing the companies want is another spread of COVID on a ship and having CDC shut them down again.  I don't think they could survive another one.  If that is the course they want/need to take, then cruises won't be able to start up again anytime soon.  The states are having a rough time getting the vaccine out there.

It is going to have to be a mix, I'm afraid.  Maybe eventually for those vaccinated but the start of the vaccinations are going to be extremely tough and hard to come by.  My wife is leading a taskforce for mobile COVID vaccinations for a major regional healthcare system.  Their first shipments of vaccines are in the hundreds.  Not thousands or tens of thousands but hundreds.  And those few vaccines are reserved for certain people first and general population will be a ways down the road.

Cruise lines are going to do the minimum of what is absolutely necessary to start sailing again which means they will verify if you currently have COVID or are symptomatic.

I don't agree with your last paragraph.  I would think the lines will go over and above what the CDC desires.  If there is another wide spread of COVID onboard the ships I think that might be the death of the lines.  I personally think you're going to have to bring the so-called CODID passport (or proof of antibodies) before they allow you to board.

Very true. Are Americans sailing on MSC? They are on SeaDream I, some 37 of them. Perhaps the problem doesn't lie with the lines, but with the passengers themselves. I have strong misgivings with sailing alongside passengers who think this is a hoax or don't take it seriously.

This!  Too many people think COVID is a method being used by the Government to take control of us.  Why would the Government destroy the economy of the country?  Such nonsense.  When you ask for proof the only thing you get is that thousand mile stare.
