Wondering if most of you book your airfare through the cruise line or separately on your own?  For many cruises out of Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, etc. I have

booked my airfare on my own.  This would be our 1st time to cruise Alaska & not sure what's best.  I do know that with the way airlines are cancelling flights

these days I would want to arrive to our embarkation port at least 1-2 days ahead.  Thanks!

We booked our own flights to Vancouver, originally arriving one day ahead of cruise.   Two weeks before the trip we decided to extend it to two nights and we’re so glad we did.  (Airlines are pretty flexible these days and we only had to pay the relatively small fare difference). P  Vancouver is a fabulous city and we so enjoyed the extra time there.  We booked a 12:30 pm return trip, walked off with our luggage and had plenty of time before boarding.

  2. A few days before our inside passage sailing I found an $11 puff vest at Costco. It was by far the most utilized article of clothing I brought.  It seemed to me to be a very popular vest that so many folks had, made me wonder if every one got theirs at Costco too.   Right before heading to dinner one eve I got something on my dressy top and had to put water on it.  Threw on my silver puff vest and it looked pretty cool.   The vest was the most versatile:  One day I wore it over a hoodie and another under my jacket and it perfectly did the job when worn with over acotton turtleneck layered with a long sleeved T-shirt.

  3. En route to Vancouver and realized if all things we left the pouch with chargers at home.  Can someone familiar with this ship let me know if there are USB ports on the Zuiderdam ?   If not I’ll pick up charging cords and power blocks when we arrive in Vancouver.
Staying in a regular veranda if that matters.

If you want to avoid crowds for dinner time, consider having dinner from the MDR brought to your cabin.  You can pick from the MDR menu, but need to order within a set time range (normally the first hour that the MDR is open, but can be delivered.  At any time.

Also, try dining in the specialty places.  Tamarind is a favorite of ours and usually not crowded.

Just looked at Tamarinds menu and love that suggestion

  5. Thanks all.  Love the suggestion @Hlitner to dine late, which is typically how we roll at home anyway, so that should flow easy for us,  And I can appreciate the the story you shared.

And totally agree with booking a veranda @jeff74.  Simply looking  forward to off the grid days on the balcony, a cocktail and some room service too.

The excursion we booked was promoted as “limited small group “.  Otherwise I think there  are plenty of opportunities for outdoor hiking in Alaska.

i suppose I should have expected my honesty to have evoked at least one response to say avoid a cruise vacation and we almost did.   But I think it’s going to be a great trip, just a little different.

  6. Still having post covid large group anxiety.  Not debilitating but enough to want to avoid crowds.  Looking for timing and dining suggestions in less crowded areas/times.  Inside passage Zuiderdam.

  7. Just received  this notification

Due to the Operational reasons, the Zuiderdam itinerary has been modified. The call to Tracy Arm Inlet on September 2nd has been removed and the estimated time of arrival to Juneau,  has been changed from 1 PM to 2 PM.

We already had booked the Tracy Arm Inlet excursion that leaves from the Zuiderdam - hope this is not cancelled too.

We recently used OnPoint testing before a Disney cruise.  We used the government tests and had no problems using the results provided by OnPoint.  I am confused by Holland America's statement that the telehealth service must be affiliated with the manufacturer of the test.  Anyone have insight into this?  Is this really enforced?

I am confused.  We will be sailing to Alaska from Vancouver.  After seeing this post I rechecked my documentation on the HA website which read as follows:

    CRUISE ONLY TESTING REQUIREMENTS
Guests who are up to date with their vaccines or fully vaccinated may take their COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours prior to sailing or a medically observed antigen test within 2 days before sailing.

Am i reading all the information correctly? For Holland we need a COVID test within 72 hours of embarkment and Canada doesn't require a COVID test if we are fully vacinated? Delta airlines requires it within 72 hours of departure.

From Holland America:  Please be advised that the COVID-19 testing policy for traveling to the United States has been updated. We are pleased to share that if you are traveling to the U.S. after your cruise, a negative COVID-19 test is no longer required for air travel into the U.S. from international destinations."

We are on the Koningsdam now. We are going to get the premium package tomorrow (Friday) and do the tests then. We are one short (have 6 people but 5 emed tests) so we practically begged HAL if we could get one test or even buy one from them. Nope. I also brought along 7 of the freebie govt tests and we are going to try getting those to work via one of these pop up companies. What I figure we need to get just one to work and upload to Verifly on Friday then we are good to go on Saturday. We are nervous about getting 1:40 flight on Saturday.

How did that go?  Please f/up post

  11. Wonder if anybody has experience with hopping onto regular internet service from their mobile when docked at the Canada Place Pier.

Would like to book a virtual Covid Test when returning to port because we plan to head straight to the airport and fly home from Vancouver.

I understand the internet on board can be flaky so it would make sense to do it early in the AM when docked in the convenience of our cabin - before debarking..

To the best of my recollection as soon as we are docked at most ports I have been able to get regular internet service using my own plan which is more reliable and faster then the ships service.

I've decided to give up on my more complicated plans for my one day in Cozumel, and am just going to go with the beach club that has the best snorkeling. I don't care about sand, pools, or a big party atmosphere, I just want somewhere I can get to and from easily by cab and the best snorkeling from shore. I also need to be able to rent equipment. My top two picks are Playa Corona and Playa Azul. Which would you chose, or I am open to other opinions? Also are any of the beach clubs adult only?

    Playa Azul 🙂

  14. Thanks to everyone's reviews.  We did go to Playa Azul - and enjoyed snorkeling.  In fact you can see snorkel tours pull up just on the other side of the swim ropes at Playa Azul.  If you are looking out at the ocean, you can walk left then enter the water and do a drift snorkel right up to the entrance of the Westin. (which is next door to Playa Azul).  I'd recommend water shoes or flippers.

The food and service was excellent USD on one side of the menu  - and reasonably priced too.

Our ship docked at  Punta Langosta and we read the cab fare to Playa Azul was $8 (gang waze dot com) , but we when left the terminal they said $15.  So we walked a few feet to our left and found a bunch of taxis waiting, the cab fare was $8 (and of course tip).

There was no problem getting a taxi for $8 returning to the ship and we had him drop us off a few blocks past the ship at the Mega Supermarket.  It was fun to walk around and we got some reasonably priced and yummy tequila to take home.   Great selection and much, much better prices than at the pier.  (They take USDollars)
