  1. Average precipitation in Papeete in February is 11.4 in. Average max temp is 86 F. I am looking out the window at several feet of snow (painfully shovelled on a pretty much daily basis this winter) and remembering the rainy season vacation we once spent in French Polynesia. French Polynesia was better.

Oceania would not be sending ships to that region if chances of relatively decent weather were not possible.

I was also in Alaska this April/May and enjoyed incredible weather (I only suffered from the food because it was HAL and not Oceania :)).

Please don't imply that people are stupid for travelling when and where they chose, MarkieMarkNYC. It just isn't nice.

  2. We had arranged a private snorkelling excursion in Bora Bora but due to a schedule change, we did not get the updated info from our CC group and missed the excursion. Everyone warned us that we HAD to book in advance, but we walked off the ship and were immediately approached and asked if we wanted to snorkel. Yes! We ending up paying a very small fraction of what the CC group paid, went in an identical boat with far fewer passengers to same area. Although there was a sandy bottom and no coral, what we saw was totally amazing! Stingrays, manta ray, two types of "harmless" sharks, fish, and even a moray eel which the guides pulled (and pulled and pulled) out from under rocks. And all this aquatic life was within a very small area. Perhaps there was nothing unusual, but there was quite an amazing variety for one small area. It was wonderful and quite unike anything I have seen in the Caribbean!

While the other groups went for lunch on a private island, we went to the other end of the same island and had lunch with the owner, who happened to be our guide.

  3. I agree that you will likely find cheaper insurance elsewhere, but especially considering that you are now in Thailand, you situation is different from the usual travel route and a local TA might have some excellent suggestions. They may even favour a different cruise that benefits single travellers. In any case, you will have fun asking and learning more.

Ask they TA how many cruises they have been on. If they have never cruised before, go elsewhere. :)

  4. Taking my first cruise on Celebrity Constellation 15 day re positioning cruise to Rome. I do not know how to buy a cruise but I think this is a good price $2500 inside cabin deck 8 which includes travel insurance for $119.00 I was once told that I can get better coverage with a insurance company other than the cruise line. Any suggestions who I might contact? I really did not how to select a cabin other than trying to be mid-ship.

Any other helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

I get our insurance through our credit card company.

If you are an inexperienced cruiser, why not drop into a local TA that specializes in cruises and pick their brain. A good TA can be very helpful in many respects. They can give you direct answers based on your particular needs. Even if you decide not to purchase through them, they might give you lots of good suggestions.

  5. I have one booked for next yr. Wonder what Oceania will be doing about this.Anyone know....please share.

Without getting into political issues, I really don't think you have to worry, Alexandra. Only American diplomats have been affected, not a single tourist or Cuban.

If worse came to worst, Oceania would simply send you to a different island.

  6. Just one question. If I bring on my next cruise my service pig does that qualify me as a chair hog :o

LOL. Of course that brings up the sensitive topic of people who abuse the privileges of "emotional support" animals. ;p

It is a pity that O does not have formal nights, because I am sure your pig would look great in tux. If he happens to end up next to me at the table one day, I promise to be considerate and not order pork chops.

  7. I think Vaitape was being facetious ;)

In that case, my apologies to Vaitape. In the place of that name, please insert the name of the OP or any of the other hogs.

Yes, there may still be chairs available by 10:30 AM. The problem is, I never want to take a dip in the pool until later in the day. Do the hogs feel that I am entitled to grab a chair before breakfast, place a book and sunglasses on it, then return for an hour in the late afternoon? No, of course they don't - only they are allowed to do this. If I did it, it would be inconsiderate.

If I were in elegant attire and the person next to me in the MDR showed up in a bathing suit and flip flops, it would only amuse me. I can overlook a lot of things that do not prevent me from doing what I am entitled to do. But chair hogs absolutely drive me wild because all I want is the occasion hour by the pool, not even every day, and I can't enjoy this time because of these people. In the hour "or so" that they go to lunch, I could be come and gone.

  8. We seldom use the pool area because it is just too hard to find a chair for the occasional hour or so when we would enjoy one.

But be honest, Vaitape, for how many hours in a day do your belongings occupy that chair and how many hours a day do you actually sit on it? On top of that 60 minutes for lunch, I bet you spent another 60 minutes at trivia ( with another hour to chat with friends and to get to the lounge and back) and another maybe at a port lecture. Then of course there's that trip to the front desk and the excursion desk. oh and maybe a brief trip or two back to the cabin. Several people could have enjoyed the chair during your "brief" trips away.

As I said earlier, people come and go from the pool area all day long. If everyone were considerate there would be chairs for everyone.

Yes, you are a chair hog, and apparently proud of it. Shame on you. We all paid for our cruise and deserve to enjoy it.

  9. Luxury to me is not cooking but having great meals ready when I am

    ;)

Lyn, I smiled today remembering your definition of luxury.

Last year we cruised around the Horn on the Norwegian Sun. The food was mostly poor, especially compared to that of Oceania, but we had an incredible aft cabin with a 180° sheltered view of the fjords, The entertainment was great, and the crew were delightful, so it was still a luxury cruise in my book. The same cruise with Oceania food would've been heaven.

Last month I took a Holland America cruise to Alaska. The food was OK but compared to HAL, life on board Oceania is a nonstop party. LOL. Still, for someone who has to prepare meals almost every single day of their life at home, I definitely consider any cruise to be a luxury.

  10. Luxury to me is not cooking but having great meals ready when I am

    Not having to vacuum

Not having to make the bed

Not cleaning the toilets (well DH does those anyway)

    Being on any Oceania ship

    YMMD ;)

You had me on the first item on your list. [emoji16]

  11. I seem to recall they were warned if it happened again they would be put off

Thank goodness it was only a 7 day cruise

Flipping a chair with her on it constitutes a physical attack and he should've been confined to his cabin and tossed at the next port. That poor woman could've been seriously injured, broken bones or hit her head.

  12. Surely the OP is a troll. Who else would innocently say something like, "There I was enjoying my lunch in the MDR when the pool attendants rudely removed my belongings so that someone else who was actually in the pool area could sit down",

People come and go from the pool area all day long. It is not realistic for the cruise line to provide a lounge chair for every single passenger. If no one ever hogged a chair that they were not using, there would be sufficient for everyone.

  13. Been cruising for 40 years have not had rocking in last 30

I agree. Modern ship stabilizers are just too darn efficient. 40 years ago you really noticed it when you got off the ship, but today even the smaller ships have good stabilizers. I kind of miss the wobbly legs.

Next we hope to try a tall ship. I am hoping that will give me more of the motion that I miss. There's nothing like the rocking of a ship to lull you to sleep. [emoji3]
