  1. We are in port 1pm - 10pm we are thinking about taking the blue bus out to Mendenhall Glacier and then hike Nugget Falls. Since we get into port at 1 pm and the last bus leaves the glacier at 6 pm is there really enough time to do this? I don't want to take the chance of missing the bus back. Also, since we are going to be doing Glacier Bay is it really a "must do" to go see Mendenhall?

Are there any hiking trails near the port? We need to keep costs down so we are trying to do a lot of things on our own. Thanks!

  2. Unfortunately this float trip isn't cheap either. It's one thing if you have a $50 "float" down a river, another when it's over $100pp. Again, only my opinion, but I certainly think money is better spent elsewhere.

Frankly, using this "savings" would probably pay for half the Chilkoot Lake Bennett tour, which is superb.

LOL I wanted to book the Lake Bennett tour with Chilkoot to begin with and not do the float trip - I was outvoted. DH just agreed to changing our excursions around, and now we are going to do the Yukon and White Pass through the cruise line. I'd rather book independently but DH is terrified of missing the ship :roll eyes:

I love this site, there are so many people with so much knowledge! Thanks!

  3. Wow - thanks for the information on the Mendenhall float. DH has gone white water rafting and thought this would be a good start for me. But what you guys describe sounds pretty boring. Told DH this and we are changing our excursions around now. Thank you!!

  4. I agree with everyone else - what you like may not be the same as what I like. That being said I started with what the cruise line offers for excursions, printed out what I thought the family would like to do, showed it to them, then narrowed it down to what we would like to do. Then I checked to see if there were any independent companies offering the same thing and checked the prices.

We are going in August and decided to spend most of the port days on our own.

Juneau we are doing a glacier float, and then if time permits taking the bus to Mendenhall Glacier and hiking up to Nugget Falls.

Ketchikan We are going to hike Deer Mountain Trails, and if time permits we are going to do the self guided walking tour of the town.

Skagway We are looking at several different day hikes, we haven't decided which one yet. We wanted to do an excursion with ocean raft alaska, but I haven't heard back from them regarding the cost. We also considered going through Chilkoot Charter and Tours (the Bennet Scenic Journey) but we couldn't see spending almost a 1000.00 for an excursion; we would have to pay for 4 people.

Victoria Again we are going to walk around town. We are planning on visiting fisherman's wharf, Maritime Museum, and the Empress Hotel.

Don't forget to check trip advisor for ideas and reviews.

  5. We are going to be ordering a couple bottles of liquor, but will need mixers. Can we carry on mixers, such as sour apple mix for martinis. There is no alcohol so is there a limit? Do we just carry it on? I would think if we put it in our checked bags we will be sent to the "naughty room." Any idea?? Thx!

  6. Thanks everyone! Yes I'm in So. California, no townships or anything like that, in fact only 1 post office; we are pretty small town. The "postal code" was the actual wording that the Princess site gave me when I tried entering my zip code. I tried the 9 digit number with and without the hyphen and it didn't work. I called Princess and they input the information, told me to get out of My Princess and try again and there shouldn't be a problem. She said they don't know why that happens.

Now to finish checking in and planning our excursions! :p

  7. So I'm trying to do our online check and I keep getting a code that says "Invalid Address - Postal Code". Ok I've lived here for over 20 years I know what my postal code it (even googled it just in case I was losing it or they changed it on me). How am I supposed to check us in if it won't take the information. I tried day before yesterday and today. Any ideas what is going on?

  8. As a person terrified of heights let me say don't let that stop you. My family out voted me on our excursion when we were in Jamaica and I had to zipline. I was so afraid, but it turned out to be the best excursion I've ever done. It's been 6 years sent we went and I still think about how much fun I had!! We won't be doing it when we go to Alaska, not this time anyway!

  9. I noticed that I don't have a cruise listed under my previous cruises. Is there anyway I can add it myself or do I have to call Princess to have them add it? All I have as proof that I sailed is our old key cards. We are planning on booking a cruise the beginning of next week, and would like to get DD a referral credit as a new cruiser, but need to get this taken care of first. Thank you Robyn.

  10. We just got back from a cruise out of Long Beach, CA that we took DS's 16 year old girlfriend. With us we took her driver's license, birth certificate, a notarized letter from her mom giving us permission to take her and treat her medically if needed, and her father's death certificate. They only looked at her birth cert and id. But I wanted to make sure we had the other stuff just incase!
