  1. As far as the pools go, there is a kids splash area which is for the younger kids - maybe this is where people were complaining about older kids being there? The pool next to the splash area is fine for the bigger kids.

We didn't go to the adult pool, but didn't see any kids there when we walked by.

  2. Just the other day I was on the phone with NCL considering upgrading rooms and I asked this question and they told me that they were not able to do it. Not sure if that is actually the case as sometimes shoreside doesn't always have he correct info but that is what I was told. Maybe someone who has asked this while on board will be able to answer.

  3. We are on the same cruise as you! 17 days, can't wait!

We were on the Getaway last August and booked a balcony with my husband and two boys and an inside with me and my daughter. When we got onboard, we went to guest services and got an extra room key for me for the balcony room and 2 extra room keys for the inside. I slept in the balcony with husband and youngest son and older son and daughter slept in the inside. The cabin steward was fine with it and she would tell me how well behaved they were (they were 17 and 14).

This time we have an extra kid with us, so I booked husband and two boys in one room and me and the two girls in another. The older kids will have one room and I will be with husband and boys.

    See you on board!

  4. Our kids have grown up on the Disney ships and we love them but the prices right now are just crazy. We sailed the Getaway last summer and are sailing on her again next month.

Frankly, I was getting quite bored with the food on Disney, so really loved the variety of offerings on NCL and the freestyle concept. The kids especially liked the Illusionarium dinner show, the Teppanyaki hibachi restaurant and the Brazilian steak house. Sure, we didn't have the same waitstaff every night so our drinks weren't waiting for us at the table like on DCL, but everyone was very nice and accommodating.

My kids are older than yours (10,14,17 when we sailed last year) so can't really comment on the kids club activities for the younger kids, but my 10 year old enjoyed Splash Academy (He wasn't sure going into it as it isn't themed heavily like on DCL, but he still had a lot of fun) and the teens had fun in the teen club (though in the teen club on DCL, they did say the staff were more involved with the kids). The kids from Splash Academy put on a circus show in the theater at the end of the cruise. Unlike DCL where the kids clubs are open through to midnight, Splash Academy is closed for a couple of hours at lunch and dinner time on sea days, so plan accordingly. Also, after 10pm or so , there is an hourly charge if the kids want to stay late.

We didn't end up going to the major evening shows so can't comment on those but we did go to Howl at the Moon and the early comedy show which were both a lot of fun.

The Getaway has a ropes course (including a small low one for younger kids), zip line, bungee trampoline, spiderweb climber/slide, rock wall, sports court, mini golf, and small bowling area. Plenty to keep the kids busy!

The water slides were great and the kids pool was fine. I have seen people complaining about it here on the boards that it was too crowded but we never saw it as crowded as the DCL pools. There was also a splash area for younger kids. No lifeguards though but there was a crew member standing at the side of the pool keeping the kids in line.

We had an inside and a balcony room. The inside was much smaller than DCL's inside but was fine for my teens. The balcony room was slightly smaller than DCL and the balcony itself was much narrower. No split bathroom, but they were a decent size and I liked that the shower had a glass door rather than shower curtain. Also, our rooms didn't have tubs. The balcony room had a coffee maker and coffee, tea, etc. Both rooms had a stocked mini bar.

That's about all I can think of at the moment! Obviously, we enjoyed it enough to be going back - if you have any specific questions, let me know.

  5. I know there have been a lot of Haven questions posted lately but I haven't been able to find answers to the following:

1 - Can you use your own coffee in the coffee/espresso machine in your suite?

2 - What is the Haven lounge? Is it just a bar? Is food served?

3 - If we order regular room service, are we still charged the 7.95 convenience fee?

4 - I have read a bunch on tipping the butler and concierge, but how does tipping in the Haven restaurant and lounge work? Do you tip at each meal or at the end of the cruise? Is there a slip you sign, like in the specialties or do you leave cash? Do you tip the person who escorts you to your room on embarkation day?

5 - Is there an email to use for pre-cruise requests? I would like to have the mini bars emptied.

6 - Is there a Haven gym? I have read conflicting info on this.

7 - Are the king beds able to be split into 2 twins?

8 - For suites in the courtyard - do you prefer deck 15 or 16 and why?

Thanks for any responses! This board is so helpful!

  6. We are a party of 6 and have booked 2 cabins. If we upsell one cabin to a haven 2 bed suite that sleeps 6, can I then cancel the second cabin (with penalties, of course) and add those 3 into the haven?

I understand the upsell fee is based on double occupancy, so you are only paying for the first 2 people to upsell.

If I were to just book the haven 2 bed on the website, it charges for pax 1 and 2, pax 3 and 4 are free, and we are charged for pax 5 and 6. I am wondering if we upsell one cabin of 3, if when we try to add the 3 pax from the other cabin in, if one of them would also be free (plus port charges, etc)?

I hope that is not too confusing to understand!

I just looked at the Vibe menu and the list is the same there too.

  8. Do you have to buy wifi before you can use it? Am I going to get a bill at the end because I concierge uses wifi? Just trying to figure things out

No, NCL does not charge to use the app (unless you want to use it to text) but make sure you put your phone in airplane mode and turn the wifi on so you don't get charged roaming from your phone carrier.

  9. We are experienced cruisers and cruised for the first time on NCL last summer on the Getaway. We just booked again for next month. We ate most of our dinners in the specialty restaurants and enjoyed the variety. My husband needs gluten free as well or he gets very sick.

We had filled out the allergy form and sent it in to ncl before sailing. There was a letter in our stateroom when we arrived with information on who to call onboard if he had any concerns and for the first few days of the cruise, someone called each afternoon checking in on him to make sure he had plenty to eat.

The only frustrating part about it was that each time we went to a specialty restaurant, we had to tell them about the allergy - it didn't automatically show up on the reservation.

The rolls served to everyone in Moderno are gluten free already - they were good - not like the typical gluten free breads and rolls. The waitress there was very good and walked my husband through the salad bar, pointing out what was safe and what wasn't.

At Cagney's they served him the same rolls from Moderno.

At Teppanyaki, they prepared his food first while the grill was still clean.

La Cucina has gluten free pizza but it should be ordered earlier in the day before your dinner. I don't remember if they also had gluten free pasta.

At Illusionarium, they served his dinner without the sauce.

I don't remember what he had at the other restaurants or dining rooms, but he was able to find something different at each. I think they served him gluten free bread at the table.

Hope this was helpful and hope you have a better experience on NCL. I liked the food better on NCL than on Royal but again we ate in the specialty restaurants almost every night. We are only doing a couple of specialties next month, so we will see how it goes in the main dining rooms.

    Good luck!

  10. I'm confused and new to the Vibe area.

If I am able to get a cabana, then I'm already in the Vibe area and have access to both, correct?

How much is the Vibe for two people? How much is the cabana? What does it mean the cabana comes with $100 OBC?

Vibe is 99.00 per person or 329.00 per couple for a cabana. If you purchase the cabana, you will get a 100.00 on board credit that they say is to be used for food or drink in Vibe but in reality it doesn't really matter what you use it for.

What time do I need to show up at the pier. I'll be in a spa balcony and not the Haven.

We were at the pier at 9:45 and got the last group 1 boarding card. We got the last cabana

    Thank you.

I am also wondering the same thing? Does reserving a cabana for two in Vibe for the week for $329 include your vibe admission for two for that week or is it an extra $100 per person admission fee on top of the $329 canbana rental?????

Yes, the 329.00 includes the cabana and vibe admission for two people.

  11. When we were on the Getaway last year my 14yo had to run everyday as well but he wasn't getting up super early so the running track was always too crowded to run later on. He ended up running outside on deck 7 - it was the deck below the Waterfront and runs just about the length of the ship and there was rarely anyone else out there. Looking at the Escape deck plans, it looks similar to Getaway so that may be an option to him as well.

  12. Ncl is not offering the discounted no frills price on their website (then they wouldn't be able to claim you are getting to pick "free" offers). However if you price around online, you will find that there is pricing that is a couple hundred dollars less per person. This is the no frills pricing. Some sites say you can call to add the additional offers but when you do the price goes up by 200.00 per person plus the 18% gratuity if you choose the dining or beverage (at this point it matches ncl's pricing).

If you can't find it online, call some online cruise travel agencies and ask if they have it. We ended up booking with an online agency that didn't have it advertised yet on their site but when we called they did offer it to us. It was a great deal as it was also combinable with the friends and family sail free promo.

There was a discussion about it here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2323061

but some of the posts ended up being deleted so it may not flow all that well anymore.

  13. We also like to fly in a day or two early especially when traveling with the kids. There is usually 5 or 6 of us traveling so the thought of something going wrong and having to try to rebook all of us on another same day flight makes me very nervous. At least this way we have an extra day or two to get to the port.

We have flown in the morning of when it has been just my husband and I but it makes for a long tiring day. I'd rather get to the port well rested and ready to vacation :)
