  1. I haven't read back to the beginning of the topic (9.5 years ago!) but I have a couple recommendations.

The series that begins with The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is delightful to read. It is a mystery series, but the mysteries aren't really the point. The protagonist is a young girl, but don't let that prejudice your decision (if it might) against reading these books.

Another series begins with The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King. They use the character of Sherlock Holmes, push the narrative along by 30 years, and add a partner who is an intelligent young women.

I wish this thread got more frequent contributions! I enjoy it.

I agree, Melissa. I enjoy talking about books, giving recommendations, and getting great recommendations so much.

Let's see. An older book that is timeless, in my opinion, is A WOMAN OF INDEPENDENT MEANS by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey. I read it a few weeks ago and savored every moment.

KILLER CRUISE by Laura Levine is a FUN story to read on a cruise. It's a light (cozy) mystery.

THE WINTER SEA and THE ROSE GARDEN are two fabulous books by Susanna Kearsley.

If you're looking for Christmas-themed books during the next month or so (or year round for me), Debbie Macomber writes a LOT of Christmas stories to set the mood.

Dog lover/cozy mystery lovers will hopefully enjoy Spencer Quinn's Chet & Bernie mysteries as much as I did.

Those are off the top of my head. Now, please, please....jump in here with GREAT suggestions for all of us :)

  2. Anything by Jennifer Weiner and/or Wally Lamb. i.e. I Know This Much is True (hope that is correct)

Also Orange is the New Black Piper Kerman (sp?).

Planning on tackling War and Peace on the TA cruise this January. Hoping to have a good glass of wine, great book and the wind howling outside.

I just LOVE your imagery of reading with "a good glass of wine, great book and the wind howling outside." That is EXACTLY what makes me happy, too :)

  3. Thanks to all who had a suggestion RE eyebrow enhancement. Lots of useable ideas. I think the slanted brush and eye shadow powder will be my first choice...maybe the Clinique...

A friend had her eyebrows (and eyeliner!) tattooed. She LOVES it and the look is natural. In my small town, the tattoo shops are frequented by college students, not middle-aged CCFs though....

I used L'Oreal Preference for several years but find it to be worth the $$ to have coloring done professionally. I always seemed to miss a couple spots...

I'm thinking the same thing. For now at least I'm going to continue having my hair colored professionally.

  4. Lynn - I have used the L'Oreal hair dye a lot - my only question would be if you could achieve the color you want. I find that this particular dye comes out darker than it shows on the box. My natural hair color is a very dark brown - actually just way too dark for my skin - I have a few gray hairs here and there, but not a lot. It does cover the gray nicely but I am having trouble getting the right color brown...even the medium brown comes out too dark for me (and the light brown turns reddish on me) - and it does tend to fade after a couple of weeks. So, I am going blonde on Tuesday - I switch back and forth between blonde and brown every year or so...I have finally found a hairdresser who listens to me and so far, she has done a great job - but this will be the first time with her changing me to blonde. Red is a funny color to achieve without ending up orange - my daughter is a natural red head and has always had beautiful hair - she is now 38 and needs a little help to keep it the right color - nothing we have found over the counter has worked correctly and she has realized that she is just going to have to pay a professional to achieve the color she wants....she just can't get it done as often as she would like, because it is so expensive to have it done. Good luck with your search...but remember, in my experience, the L'Oreal comes out a lot darker than I was expecting - no matter what color brown I choose.

    That's my fear...orange hair :(

Red is such a tricky color. I hate spending so much having my hair colored professionally, but I may be stuck. It's tough because although I love the color, it fades quickly. Ideally my hair should be colored once a month, but I have it done every 5 to 6 weeks. That really adds up cost wise. I was so hoping for a less expensive alternative, but I don't want orange or dark hair :(

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it.

  5. Indiana,

If you want something easy to find at Walmart, I use Revlon Brow Fantasy. It is a pencil on one end, and a gel brush thing on the other. It comes in 4 shades from light blond to dark brownish black. The 2nd lightest one is the one I use to fairly well match my (dyed) red hair which is a mix of Loreal Preference 6RB and 6R. Betty

    Hi, Betty,

My eyebrow issue is for another day :). Right now I'm very, very interested to read about someone using L'Oreal Preference. My natural hair color was strawberry blonde, but that was many, many years ago. Age and gray have not helped my red color :)

Sooooooooooo, I'm getting tired of spending soooo much to have my hair colored professionally and have been thinking about L'Oreal. Do you like it? How does the color turn out? I really want strawberry blonde but NOT orange. Please, please give me your review of your color.

    Thank you so much.

  6. This is my first post on this thread...but I am happy to have found one that looks like it is just for chatting. :)

I am 55 years old and I have been on only 2 cruises so far -both with my hubby of 33 years. They were the Ruby Princess (3 years ago -for our 30th anniversary) and the Celebrity Equinox (1 year ago -just because...). I still work (and LOVE it). I am a primary school teacher. :)

I have read some of the recent and some of the earliest posts, but not them all.

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas!

  7. Did I miss something? Are you a writer?

    Beth

    Hi, Beth,

Yes, I'm a writer. Two of my books are cruise romances. Anyone who knows me understands my passion for cruising. I write under my own name, Lynn Byer. I'm a court reporter by day...but writing and cruising are my true loves :)

  8. Thanks for the heads up - didn't even know about the upgrade til you mentioned getting Kindle on the Ipad - and of course, I couldn't until I got the upgrade downloaded.. worked out really well - have all the books now on both e-things -- however, I cannot seem to make the font bigger on the ipad - unless I make the font bigger in general - I was trying to make it bigger by my fingers - I will most likely buy a new white page kindle tho' -

I loved all 3 of your books - read them all now and so glad I did!!! carol

    Hi, Carol,

Thank you for your wonderful comments. I'm so happy you enjoyed my books :)

I'm also happy you have the Kindle app on your iPad now. It isn't the same as having a regular Kindle, but it's great for certain things...like cookbooks where you want color and size. I have quite a few cookbooks on my iPad now. Yes, I'm quite obsessed about books:)

I definitely recommend the Paperwhite. I love, love, love mine!!!

  9. I am still here ! but haven't read any posts on any of my threads - busy with Thanksgiving and today we updated a lot of stuff on my Ipad and computer - just hope you all had a super good Thanksgiving - we went to our nieces who had 16 of us at a beautiful and delicious sit=down dinner - very fancy...good company (family members), good and light conversation, very pleasant day -

busy getting ready for my cruise now - will be back once I read the past postings - just me......... carol

    Hi, Carol,

I am sooooo haooy to hear you have Kindle on your iPad now. You are going to LOVE having cookbooks on your iPad.

Beth is on her way home = that went by fast!

  12. Thank You all - been having a good day - had a nice dinner - specialty restaurant atmosphere at one of our local places here - THEN, we skipped dessert and went to Starbucks cuz my cousin sent me a gift card -- the special deal there is.... the card is one from Hawaii and has a Hawaiian scene on it - so we both had coffee and dessert....

    H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y, CAROL!!!!

I hope you're having a great one. Any special plans?

  14. Still jealous..... Any day on a curise is way better that a day at work. ;)

I have to agree with you :) Since my son's birthday is MONDAY, we're just going to have to pretend it's really Tuesday and celebrate like heck when we get on Allure. This is the craziest birthday ever. We went out to dinner TODAY (because we're not sure what the weather will be like tomorrow and Monday). We got an ice cream cake (because we're not sure whether the store will be open tomorrow or Monday). BUT.....WHAT excuse can I use for the fact that we already started eating the cake today? Weak? Sad about the cruise situation? Approaching storm? No! Just wanted the cake!!!
