I mean, its new york. Good news: they cap it at $400! (we're leaving a car there for 20 days during a TA next year)

I thought the lots are only open when there is a ship in port. They are gated, so you can't just come and go. Do they make special concessions for TA's, maybe depending on which direction you're sailing?

  2. I'm deciding between a main deck o/v, and a lower promenade lanai on Veendam. I've been reading some older posts from when the lanai cabins were new, so I'm wondering if, as more people have tried them, I can hear more opinions.

I like o/v cabins on lower decks to minimize movement and I do like having the ocean right outside my window. It's as if I'm really "on" the water. The lanai cabin would give me wonderful access to the promenade, where I tend to spend more time than the sunny pool decks. I like the shade and hearing the water against the hull.

So I guess my questions are, if I get the o/v, will I still be able to find a deck chair on the promenade, and if I get a lanai, will the feeling be much different since I have to look out across the promenade to see water? I understand I'd have to close the curtains at night if I want privacy in the lanai, but I love the idea of poking my head out first thing in the morning for some fresh air. I think the price difference is about $400 US for 12 nights.

Thank you for any opinions and insights. This will be my first time on HAL.

Does this turn off ALL pictures?

I was able to turn off just the sidebar photos and the captions. It was quite by accident, so I'm not sure if I can explain. When I clicked on "Block Element", a new window opened up. I then went back to CC and hovered over the areas I wanted blocked. The highlighted color was yellow, and I didn't realize that was the "element". So I repositioned the cursor until the sidebar was highlighted, then clicked. The first time I did it, I only highlighted one photo. Then I realized I can highlight the entire column, and that's when I got rid of the rest of them.

Right, because technically it is not an ad. You have to tell your ad blocker to block that particular element.

I use AdBlock Plus and this is what I had to do ( other blockers may have similar options). There is an ABP icon on my browser, which I click on to open a drop-down menu. One of choices is "Block Element." Click on it and it will highlight all of the blockable elements. Mouse-over the element you want to block (in this case, the pictures themselves) and right click to block the picture. You may have to do one picture at a time.  I had to try a couple of times to block but finally learned that the best solution to the problem was just to block the pictures themselves.

If you make a mistake and block something you didn't want to block, start again. Step1# is to erase the filters you just added. On ABP, click on the icon and selected Options. Then select Advanced and scroll down until you see the list of Your Filters. Click on Edit and when the editing window open, deleted everything on the list and hit save. Close the window and then repeat the steps in the first paragraph.

I chose to only delete the pictures. I'm stuck with the Newest Pictures heading and the info about the pictures --and this I am willing to live with--because I could not figure out how to block the entire New Pictures element with out also deleting the announcements, which I do want to keep.

Thank you! I came here to see if there was some way to block the photos. As other people said (I'm just reiterating for the cause) I don't want to see other people's photos, and I think it was slowing down my computer. I think I set up Ad Blocker correctly. I couldn't figure out how to choose the element, but then I realized I just had to hover over it.  It turned yellow. I clicked, and they disappeared.

  5. When is your flight? In addition to what everyone else said (except the winds - that's more predictable for trans-Atlantic flights), the airlines sometimes add more time to winter flights in case of de-icing. If it's not winter, it's most likely the extra taxi time at the NY airports.

    So, lots of reasons!

  6. I just had this happen last week. I booked through United. The outbound flight was on United, the return on Lufthansa. I booked my (free) seat on the United site, then went to Lufthansa to buy my seat. They wouldn't let me. I telephoned, and was told, "it's a codeshare". Yes, I understand that, and was prepared to pay for my seat assignment, but there was no way to do it. It wasn't as if I booked through a discount site.

It was within 24 hours of purchase, so I cancelled and booked r/t on United with a slightly awkward connection, but it's actually working to my advantage. And I prefer the aircraft type, anyway.

  7. my feeling is that it is a grave and to raise her and restore her for people to travel in would almost be sacrilegious. Some things should be left as they were. I don't approve of the Bluebird project. Whilst only one person died it is still one too many.

I wouldn't go into a cemetery and dance on people's graves which is how I would feel if I was on the Titanic.

She should be left in peace as should Bluebird.

I was hiking in the Lake District a couple of months ago and stayed in the Coniston area. A local museum had an exhibit on the Bluebird, including some rather smashed up parts (to demonstrate the force of the impact). According to the display, they felt they needed to raise the wreckage because as deep water diving and technology was becoming more and more accessible to the general public, they were afraid of the site being ransacked and otherwise disturbed. It seems to make sense, although I'm not sure I agree with restoring it to put back in the water.

Thanks for the article. I appreciate the follow-up to my visit.

  8. I only used them once a few years ago. It was convenient, they make a stop or two along the Thruway for food and restrooms. On the return, they wait for everybody. You probably won't leave the port before 10:30 or 11:00 because you are getting on the bus that just dropped off the new week's departing passengers. I'm not sure if they monitor the ship's arrival time.

  9. Are you going up to Canada to catch the AC flight? Just curious.

    Yes. Easy drive to YUL.

I've never flown in PE on Air Canada so can't comment on that offering, but flew PE on Air France this past October. I found the seat to be extremely uncomfortable. It doesn't recline the way a typical recliner does; it's often described as a "shell" that slides forward and tilts back. Someone here can probably describe it better than I can, but as I said, I found it extremely uncomfortable for trying to sleep. For me personally, I didn't think it was worth the price difference that I paid so in the future if I couldn't swing business class on AF, I'd save my money and fly coach.

I've heard that about the clamshell seats. How are the clamshells for just sitting up and reading? What I'm really thinking of doing is flying coach over on the overnight flight, and PE on the way back when I'll be awake.

Oh, and if this thread disappears, it's because I asked to delete it last night. Now I hope it stays, so hopefully the moderators didn't get my message yet.

  10. The title pretty much tells it. I've narrowed down my options for traveling to Paris to either Air Canada or Air France, both using Premium Economy. The price is almost the same, although Air Canada may be slightly less and Air France has a slightly better schedule (as long as they're not on strike). Both are non-stops, no connections. Thank you for any thoughts.

  11. The ride is about 2 1/2 hours, and departs almost hourly in the morning.

Last I heard, Amtrak will be resuming its track work this spring, and some trains *might* be using Grand Central. I don't know for sure. I just wanted to put that warning out there.

Oh, and if you haven't taken this route before, most people try to get seats on the left side (heading north) for the river views. Makes me proud of my state. Enjoy the ride!

  12.

Oh well, there is always the sight of the first river cruise ships sailing in March with the first new green leaves adorning the trees along the embankments to look forward to! :)

Wherever you are headed this year on the rivers and oceans, safe travels.

I'm looking forward to your posts as I'm doing my first river cruise this year, on the Rhine, in March. So there is a chance of green leaves? ;) It's possible that there will still be snow where I live.

    Thank you for your reports!

  13. How much do they cost over in NY? In Vermont they are $25 more than the regular license and are good for 4 years. That makes them a bit more than a passport card but we opted for the EDL because it's one less thing to carry around as we always have our licenses with us when we are out and about. We got the EDLs primarily for cruising because I found out how much it cost to replace DW's naturalization certificate if it got damaged or lost:o.

The EDL is $30 extra in NY and is good for 8 years.

  14. Just so you all know, I actually LEARNED something from all this. I NEVER knew New York issued three types of ID. Your regular drivers ID, the REAL ID ID and the Enhanced ID. I had no clue the Real ID was available. The difference is the Real ID has a "star" in the one corner and the Enhanced has an American Flag in the lower corner.

I just renewed my NY license yesterday. The basic one can be renewed online. If you want the Real or Enhanced, you have to go to the DMV with lots of documentation. I definitely recommend taking the time to read the website carefully and get the right documents. I was surprised at what I needed. Then when I got there, there was still another form to fill out ;)

  15. Try the Parking Spot. We have used them in the past.I believe they are on Haynes Ave. They are very reasonably priced and have a shuttle to/from the airport. You can make a reservation online and there are usually discount codes too.

We used The Parking Spot last time we flew out of Newark. There are three locations and I'm not sure which one we used (I'll check, if you want). It was a holiday, so I took whatever was available. I plan to use them on my next trip. We left the car at their lot (they parked it) and it was a short drive to the airport. They took us right to the terminal, not the Airtrain. Coming back, we telephoned from baggage claim. Have your ticket stub handy because they need the reservation/confirmation/stub number. While someone comes to pick you up (at the terminal) someone else gets your car. So when you arrive back at their lot, your car is waiting for you. They have coffee and water, and we were very pleased with the service.
