  1. A very warm welcome to Rostock/Warnemünde for all our visitors in 2020.

The OFFICIAL Port of Rostock Authority berthing schedule for 2020 is now available on:-

    https://www.rostock-port.de/en/cruise-shipping/port-calls/2020-port-calls.html

This schedule, once set, rarely changes as the berths are assigned many months ahead and it is part of the very busy, general port traffic.

The berths, third column, are situated as follows:-

P7 and P8 are in the main Cruise Centre in Warnemünde with permanent, modern buildings and all the usual facilities for passengers both in transit and embarking/disembarking.

5-10 mins walk from the train station and the town; access to both of which is now barrier-free.

P1-4 is a smaller berth at the opposite end of the passenger quay, transit passengers only using temporary facilities. Same distance to the station and town.

LP41 and LP31 are situated in the Overseas Port on the opposite side of the river and used for larger ships when the Cruise Centre is full. Most ships run shuttle buses to and from these berths but for public transport details please see my web site.

Warnemünde station upgrade, completion due late May 2020.

Access to both the station and the town from the passenger quay will at last be barrier-free, the underpass replaced by a level path at the end of the platforms. There will also be direct access from the Cruise Centre to the excursion train platform just across the road..

    Berlin trains

Starting in late May there will be an InterCity service every two hours direct between Warnemünde and Berlin Hbf. For timetables and ticket prices:-

    https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de//bin/query.exe/en

Tip – special fares, which offer a considerable saving, are available on-line 90 days before the date of travel. These sell out quickly.

There is very little difference between first and second class on DB trains and second is equal to, in some cases better than, first in many other countries.

    Web site – www.travelanni.webs.com

The 2020 update has been started but some of the new timetables and fares will not be available for a while yet so please keep checking for more changes.

I have now retired but will be spending a good deal of time as a volunteer in the Kröpeliner Tor, HQ of the Historical Society where visitors are always welcome for a chat about our city. I will also be keeping the web site up to date and doing my best to answer your questions on this thread.

Retired?? Maybe not but I love to meet people and help them to enjoy, as much as I do, this beautiful, interesting city that I now call home.

I hope that I will one day meet some of my CC friends.

    Happy planning and cruising.

  2. Hi, as a resident of Rostock who travels everywhere by train I agree with most of the above comments re the excursion trains to Berlin but please do not confuse the standard of the trains used by the cruise lines with the scheduled trains between Rostock and Berlin.

The trains chartered by the cruise lines consists of old, even obsolete, rolling stock no longer used by Deutsche Bahn on their regular services but trotted out every summer for charter.  There would be an outcry if local passengers were expected to use them.

As to the time taken for the trip, the bus is faster! The trains are on a very busy route for both passengers and freight and, not being part of the regular schedule, have to give way    and allow the normal traffic to go through.

The trains on the regular schedules have modern, A/C, spacious, open seating cars; they are clean and comfortable; second or economy class is equal to first class in many countries and the slight differences are not worth the extra cost.

Unfortunately the regular services do not fit well with the schedules of the cruise ships and, being at the 'end of the line' there is a greater chance of late arrival into Rostock in the evening so DIY to Berlin is not recommended.  Although the ship will wait for its own trains it will not wait for late, regular DB trains.  The buses, however, have a plan A,B, and even C to deal with delays and do not miss ships. It is more than their business is worth.

So, IMHO, the bus is far better than the excursion trains for a day trip to Berlin but if you are travelling between Warnenemünde and Berlin for any other reason then Deutsche Bahn is the way to go.

    Happy cruising

  3. Can anyone give me information about using a wheelchair in northern european ports?

We're about to embark tomorrow and I'm worried that my wife likely can't walk much at all at the moment.

Hi, Although I have retired (?) from Cruise Critic, as a daily user of a small mobility scooter in Rostock/Warnemünde I feel I must jump in on this one.

    Warnemünde

Access to the town and station is good though it takes a bit longer. Just follow the signs along the quay, up the ramp and follow the footpath. When you get to the rubbish bins (!) - for the station turn sharp left along the first line of cars and take the path straight ahead onto the station platforms: - for the town follow the path straight ahead, turn left, then right over the bridge. I agree that the promenade is lovely but to get there with 'wheels' can be a bit fraught. Some of the footpaths along the harbour (it is not a canal by the way) are a bit steep and not very level but worth the effort. There is access to the promenade by a ramp.

If you are going to Rostock by train the other alternative is to turn the opposite way (left) along the road when you leave the ship and take the train from the next station, Warnemünde Werft. This is all new, level and about 10 mins walk from the ship, less if you are berthed on P8.

    Rostock.

All Rostock public transport is wheelchair friendly. The main station has elevators to all levels. You can go straight down from the train platform to the tram platform. Please make sure you take the correct elevator marked CITY, it is the one at the furthest end of the platform. The level numbering can be a bit confusing but the tram platform is level -1. (Please note that your ticket covers both train and tram. There is really nothing of interest along the 20min walk into the city centre)

Take tram #4,5 or 6. #4 is usually not so crowded.

Tip - do not get off at the Neuer Markt as the market place is cobbled. Go the the next stop, Lange Str, where you will be in the middle of the pedestrian area.

Rostock does indeed have many cobbled streets but the main city centre is a pedestrian area, smoothly paved with good kerb inclines. Most of the surrounding main streets and green areas have smooth pavements and easy street crossings. You may have to negotiate some small sections of cobbles to access some of the sights but most of these are 'modern' cobbles and not too bad. Even with the small wheels on my scooter I find riding in the city is comfortable. All in all Rostock is very friendly to those of us who need wheels to get around.

I hope it is not too late for the OP who asked this question to read this and that it will help others to enjoy our beautiful and interesting city.

    Happy cruising :)

  4. As from next week I am taking up a voluntary position within Tourism in order to have more personal contact with our visitors. This of course makes me ineligible to be a contributor within the rules.

    I am still puzzled.

the position is a voluntary one...not a paid position....so why would this make her ineligible? (perhaps a slight misinterpretation of the rules?)

to me, it is another way of helping visitors as we all do on these forums.

I never expected or wished for my final post to cause controversy or my decision to be questioned. I find this most unpleasant

Interpreting the rules as I see them, I alone decided that I am no longer eligible to contribute as a local resident and that decision is final.

May we now please drop the subject and let the forum return to its intended purpose of helping each other to enjoy cruising.

    Anni

  5. Dear Members and Contributors,

This will be my last post on this forum except as a cruiser seeking advice. As from next week I am taking up a voluntary position within Tourism in order to have more personal contact with our visitors. This of course makes me ineligible to be a contributor within the rules. :(

I have enjoyed my time with Cruise critic and hope that I, in my way, have helped cruisers to enjoy their visit to this beautiful area.

I would like to thank especially those who have taken the trouble to acknowledge my replies and host Colleen for her expression of appreciation. Also special thanks to 'Sauer Kraut' for answering queries when I have been off on my cargo ship adventures.

I will continue to update and add pages to my web site and hope that someone else will take my place as the 'local' for Rostock/Warnemünde.

    Happy cruising :),

  6. Important:- further information for cruisers intending to visit Schwerin from Rostock by train before 30th June 2018.

    Hi Everyone,

There are major works on this line and it is closed between Bad Kleinen and Schwerin. The train between Bad Kleinen and Schwerin is replaced by a bus service adding about 25mins to the travel time.

The train service was due to return to normal in mid-April but DB has just announced that the line will remain closed and the bus replacement will operate until Saturday June 30th at the earliest.

I will try to keep cruisers informed on this thread if there are any more changes but please check on-line https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en before you make your travel plans.

  7. Hello Anni: could you be more specific on how to go from the port in Warmemunde to Rostock by train and then back to Warmemunde by boat. In otherwords , which stations are recommended & good places to walk around. We will be there on a Tuesday in early July. Thanks

    Hi,

How to get from Warnemünde to Rostock by train/tram and back by boat is described in detail on the Rostock page of my web site.

Although Warnemünde and Rostock are both pedestrian friendly and very interesting there are no good places to walk around between the two, they are all just suburban stations serving the local population.

    Happy cruising :),

  8. Hi Everyone,

April sees the start of a new season of cruise visits to Rostock/Warnemünde. We look forward to welcoming you and wish you a pleasant stay in our beautiful part of Germany.

The new timetables and fares, both local and long distance, have just been released and I have updated my web site. There are very few changes. The times and prices are correct to the best of my knowledge but it is always worthwhile to check online nearer to your date.

There are journey planners and useful information in English on the following web sites:-

Local transport - buses, trams, ferries

    https://fahrplanauskunft.verkehrsverbund-warnow.de/bin/query.exe/en

Trains - both local and long distance

    https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de//bin/query.exe/en

The 2018 schedule of Cruise Ship port calls to Rostock/Warnemünde is also available along with maps of the port and useful information for passengers

    http://www.rostock-port.de/en/cruise-shipping/port-calls/2018-port-calls.html

I am now in the process of adding pages to the web site with information on more places to go and things to do and see in the area.

    Happy cruising :)

  9. Thank you for your update! We are in Warnemunde on June the 8th and planning to take a train to Schwerin via Rostock, hopefully it will be back on regular schedule , Do we need 1 Mecklenburg Lander group ticket for 4 adults and 2 kids under 14 years old? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for your appreciation. We hope things will be back to normal too!! You are quite right about which ticket you will need but remember that if you intend to take the 9:07am from Rostock to Schwerin you will need local transport tickets for the s-bahn as you will be leaving Warnemünde before 9am when the Lander ticket becomes valid; 2.10euro for each adult, 1.50euro for each child.

    Happy cruising:)

  10. Important news for cruisers intending to visit Schwerin from Rostock by train.

    Hi Everyone,

There are major works on this line which means changing from train to bus in Bad Kleinen, adding about 25mins to the travel time.

The service is due to return to normal on Sunday 15th April, 2018 but past experience tells us that there are sometimes 'unforeseen delays'

I will try to keep cruisers informed on this thread if there is any change. Otherwise you can check on-line https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

  11. Hi,

We're intending to take the bus from Warnemunde to Bad Doberan, then train from BD to Rostock where we intend to go around on the trams before returning to Warnemunde.

Assuming we buy 3-zone tickets for the bus, this should allow us travel all day (except for the Molli train). However, do we need to purchase separate short-trip tickets for the trams in Rostock or are the 3-zone tickets valid for the trams as well?

Any info appreciated, thanks very much

Hi, you do not need separate tickets. The trams, like the trains and buses, are part of the local transport system.

These tickets are also valid on the cross river ferry from Warnemünde to Höhe Dune but not on the boat between Warnemünde and Rostock which is a privately operated river cruise.

    Happy cruising :)

  12. Breakaway will be docking in Warnemunde not Rostock

    Not quite correct

In the 2018 season Norwegian Breakaway will be calling in Rostock/Warnemünde roughly every 9 days.

According to the Port of Rostock Cruise Ship call schedule for 2018

on 17th and 26th June she will berth in the Rostock Overseas Port (berth LP31) and for the rest of her calls will berth at the Warnemünde Cruise Terminal (berth P8).

Please note that with the exception of Aida ships, which have priority in the Cruise Terminal, cruise ships do not necessarily berth in the same place on each call. On the above web site you will find the official berthing schedule issued by the Port of Rostock Authority. Once assigned berths are only changed in exceptional circumstances as they are organized months, even years, in advance. There are also some very useful maps of both the Overseas Port and the Cruise Terminal and other general information about Rostock and Warnemünde on the same web site

    Happy cruising :).

  13. Thank you for the information. Do you have to reserve a taxi ahead of time, or are there some at the port? Also do you know the approx. cost to get to Lambrechtshagen (Hertz) from Warnemunde? Thank you.

Hi, Not sure how you booked your car but Hertz have a dedicated web site for cruisers and an office at the cruise terminal. Sometimes travel agents etc. in USA and UK don't know this and just go to the main office in Rostock. Details below.

    https://www.hertz.co.uk/p/car-hire/germany/rostock/rostock-warnemuende-cruise-terminal

    Opening hours

    Mo-Sa 0800-1100

    Su on request

    Address

    Am Passagierkai, 18119

    Telephone: 0381683065

There are always taxis at the Cruise Terminal and also at the rail station nearby. If you prefer to book in advance, either by phone or on-line, here is the web site which deals with all taxi companies in the Rostock area http://www.hansetaxi-rostock.de/en/

The fare from Warnemünde to Lambrechtshagen is around 25-30€. The fares are set by local regulations and are the same whichever taxi company you use.

  14. Our cruise in May ends in Warnemunde, Germany, we have rented a car from Hertz in Rostock, Germany, looking for ideas to get us from Warnemunde to Rostock to pick up the car at Hertz, which is located in Lambrechtshagen section of Rostock.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

GradUT is quite correct, taxi would be the way to go. Although Lambrechtshagen is relatively close to Warnemünde you would have to go into Rostock and out again to get there by public transport.

However, most car hire firms eg. Sixt, Europcar, deliver cars to the cruise ship terminal for pick-up. Do Hertz not do this? If you have not already done so it would be worthwhile to ask.

  15. My wife and I are interested in taking the Blaue Flotte trip from Rostock to Warnemaunde. I have all sorts of information but cannot seem to find where in Rostock specifically to buy tickets or get on the boat.

If anyone has taken this route ( I know they also go from Warnemaunde to Rostock but I think we will take the train that way).

thanks in advance for any information that can be shared.

Hi, I have written all the information regarding the boat trip in the 'how to get from Warnemünde to Rostock' section of the Rostock page on my web site including info for the return journey. The tickets are purchased on the boat.

Please note that the timetables and fares are still to be updated for 2018 but I will do this as soon as they are published.

  16. Any suggestions for trips and tours etc. during our Baltic cruise next July.

All the advertised official tours seem astronomically expensive as is a Russian Visa! I know certain official tours do not require individual visas but even the local companies charge a mint! We are not really keen on deep, cultural experiences but just want to make the most of Copenhagen, Tallinn, SP, Stockholm & Germany for our 12 year old daughter.

All tips and info, including advice about obtaining currencies would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Hi, as regards Germany, if you do not intend to go to Berlin there is my web site suggesting places to go and how to get there from Warnemunde/Rostock. It features easy DIY trips at reasonable cost within two hours travel time (mostly considerably less) of the cruise terminal. The timetables and fares relate to this year but I will be updating the whole site when the 2018 timetables etc for both local and distance transport are published in December.

    Happy planning :)

  17. In re-reading your website, I see that I misunderstood something. The place you stated was a good seaside town to hop off is called Heiligendamm not Kuhlungsborn. Would that be on the bike path referred to by GradUT (above)?

If we were going to bike (to somewhere) on the bike path, see a seaside town, have lunch, walk around Rostock and take the Mollie train. Could we do all that and return to ship by 5:45 pm (if we departed ship between 9:30 and 10:00)? If so, in what order would you suggest for this itinerary? And, if we can't find the bike rental or the bike rental isn't an option that day, what changes would you suggest? It is probably helpful to add that we are able to ride bikes but we do not do it regularly and therefore would not be 'speeding along at an athletes pace'. ;):D

As always, thank you for the help.

Hi, I thank you for your appreciation.

You would not be able to fit in all you suggest within your time limit.

Visiting Heiligendam and/or Kuhlungsborn is something to do EITHER on the Molli train OR by bicycle but if you are just interested in visiting a seaside town then Warnemuende is probably the best example of a typical German seaside holiday destination on the Baltic coast !

Within the time frame you suggest it would be quite rushed to even do both the Molli and Rostock. The most relaxed itinerary would be to take the train to Rostock in the morning, stroll around and have lunch there, return to Warnemuende by boat and spend the afternoon exploring the town. You could still hire bikes and explore the coastal bike path if you wished.

    Happy cruising :)

  18. Hi, We will be in the Warnemunde port in mid-September. I was doing a little research on your website and trying to determine our itinerary as we will not be taking the long journey to Berlin. We visit on a Monday and the Schwerin is closed. Is there any reason to go out there if it is closed? We are also thinking of doing the Mollie train. Is that a good option in September? Not sure about the weather or seasonality of it. On your website you mention stopping at the seaside town of Kuhlungsborn. Is there still a good reason to do that in the fall (rather than summer)? I associate seaside visits with summer. It seems like walking around Rostock is still a good option. What do you suggest for a leisurely itinerary? We don't want to rush off the ship at the crack of dawn and plan to eat dinner on the ship (lunch in port).

Thanks so much for your help and have a great day!

Hi, at this time of year you really cannot plan according to the seasons! Although it is the middle of summer we are having a coolish spell at the moment, 18-21C max. Last year the summer weather lasted into early October and the forecast is for warm, sunny weather next week. Unless you intend to swim in the sea, anytime between Easter and October is suitable for the seaside. This is considered the 'holiday season' when everything is open.

If, on a Baltic cruise, you are only going to see the inside of the castle in Schwerin it is probably not worth it as you will see much more impressive palace interiors in SPB for example. However the outside of the castle IS impressive and the gardens and park, which are open every day, are beautiful. The town is nice too, set as it is on lakes and with some really interesting buildings

I would recommend the Molli train. The ride through the countryside is lovely and Kulungsborn is a very popular holiday destination in September.

On the way back you could stop in Bad Doberan (where you change from the Molli to public transport) and sit and have a coffee while watching the Molli steam up the middle of the Main Street or visit the Minster in the grounds of the old monastery.

If you choose to walk around Rostock remember that most places close at 6pm. I personally would choose to finish with a walk around Warnemeunde which is a little gem. Depending on your departure time you may even be able to do this after dinner as the Main Street is only 5mins walk from the ship.

    Happy cruising :)

  19. The German train system, Deutsche Bahn, offers special cross-country tickets for groups up to 5 people for one low price. A quick look at their website shows that all 4 of you could travel from Berlin to Warnemuende for under 70 Euros. You probably couldn't rent a car or hire a private transport for that little amount of money. If you have never taken the train in Germany, it's easy and comfortable. (We used to live in Berlin and often traveled around by train.)

Definitely the easiest way to go! I have lived in Germany for 10 years and travelled all over the country by train as I have never owned a car.

For details, timetables, fares etc. please see the Berlin page on my web site.

  20. Heinbloed,

I was told to ask you! We were just notified we will be now docking in Rostock pier which is an industrial area. How do we get to the Rostock City wall? Are there trams, busses etc? Thanks for your help.

Hi, in addition to the services described in the previous post there is a bus service connecting with the train which runs between Rostock and Warnemuende. For details please see my web site. There is a page especially for those docking at piers LP41/42 in the commercial port.

  21. Hi Travelanni,

We purchased the Landers ticket for August 15,2017 intending to go from Warnemunde to Schwerin. The cruise docks at 7:30am. Can we take the S-Bahn train at Warnemunde at 08:33 and change at Rostock for the 09:07 train to Schwerin? The reason I asked is that I thought the Landers ticket is active from 09:00 on August 15. Is the 08:33 S-Bahn from Warnemunde okay for us to take?

Hi, most certainly you can take the 8:33 s-Bahn from Warnemuende to Rostock, or any other before 9:00 for that matter, but you will need to purchase a single local transport ticket for each member of your party either from the ticket machine or the office on the station. Your Lander ticket will cover the return journey.

I would advise anyone to take an earlier s-Bahn if they can, the 8:33 does not leave any time for error in Rostock and the next train to Schwerin is two hours later.

    Happy cruising :)

  22. Thanks, Anni.

    Thank you for your appreciation.

For the information of all my friends and cruise correspondents, I will be back in Germany and on-line every day from 3rd August. Had a fabulous holiday in Australia with my family and am looking forward to moving house in the near future, back again to Rostock/Warnemuende. I look forward to meeting Cruise ship passengers and being of any help I can as I do my shopping etc. around and about the city.

    Happy cruising :)
