  1. Breakaway does not on any consistent basis. They have a channel called Sport24 that primarily shows the soccer games you mention, as well as cricket, during the day. At night they show a game or two from whichever pro sport is in season in the US.

  2. I'm planning to do the same thing on the Dawn next month. I'd recommend a travel bag, like others have suggested, as well as as a Bag Boy Backbone. It's a telescoping umbrella-like device that keeps the top of the travel bag taut in the event it is knocked into a wall or other bags. Should run you around $30 on Amazon. Besides that, my only other suggestion is if they have a driver with an adjustable head, they may want to unscrew the head and hovels and pack them in the bag to reduce the chance of something breaking.

  3. Hi, I would ask in the solo section as well but can tell you the following for when I stayed on the Epic (I upgraded when I was on the Breakaway the week before). The connecting rooms (shown by arrows) could be nosier as there is less space in between (note, of course they only connect for friends the go together and request it). Also, sometimes if there is a space in between rooms it could be a crew area or something with the ship etc... Were there any particular ones you were considering?

I would second both of these things. I made friends with someone who had a connecting room and you could hear their TV clear as day one evening as we were meeting up for dinner. I was in 11541, and the blank space was a steward's closet. It got so noisy one morning that the woman in the cabin below mine took the time to come up, figure out which stateroom she was under, and then call me (and wake me out of a dead sleep) to tell me to stop stomping around so much. Other than that morning noise though, that end of the hallway was good on pedestrian noise and such.

Guests who purchase a reservation for one of Great Stirrup Cay’s luxury beach villas will enjoy a completely pampered experience from ship to shore, as they will be whisked away by one of several air-conditioned shuttles running from the tender marina to the lagoon reception area. Studio villas feature an outdoor terrace, private bathroom and living/dining area, and can accommodate two to four guests. One bedroom villas accommodate four to six guests and feature a bedroom, private bathroom, living and dining areas and outdoor terrace with a hot tub. The ultimate island escape, Great Stirrup Cay’s two bedroom villas can accommodate up to 10 guests and feature two bedrooms, two private bathrooms, living and dining areas, and an expansive outdoor terrace with a dining area and hot tub.

I guess I'm a bit confused as to why someone would need a bedroom, let alone two bedrooms, at a day-stop cruise line island. Has there been any talk of NCL over-nighting at GSC?

  5. It depends on what your definition of better is. If better means saving money by not having to tip someone per bag to bring them in for you, but having to haul your own stuff to wherever the check-in point is, then it's better not to use one.

If better means the convenienve of having your bags taken care of at the curb for a small fee and proceeding more light-of-hand to the check-in lines, you should use a porter.

  6. I'm on the same sailing as you, looking forward to it! Have you joined the Roll Call yet? It's located here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2315672

Also, a passenger on the 12/11-18 voyage on Breakaway was nice enough to snap pictures of the Dailies, so while they may not be the exact schedule for 2/26, they may help you plan: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2435576

And like the previous poster said, log into the NCL website and see what nights the shows are scheduled for and work from there!

  7. There's a chance that either the ESPN Caribbean feed, Sport 24 (or whatever they call it now) or the Special Event channel may be showing football, but it will be hit or miss which match is on. You won't really know until it's time for kick off

  8. Do you make reservations for specialty restaurants before you get on the ship or do you have to wait until you get on the ship? Also do you have to make reservations for the three main dining rooms or do you just show up?

Dining reservations open up 90 days prior to sailing for all restaurants, including the MDRs, and you can book them through your reservation on the NCL website. On board, there are touch screens located in the elevator lobbies that allow you to book dining and show reservations.

The specialty restaurants tend to fill up more quickly at the "prime times" with reservations, so if you have a night and/or time you specifically want for a birthday/anniversary/etc., it helps to book specialty earlier.

You can book MDRs ahead of time too, but I never had much of a problem walking up and getting a table. Sometimes there's a wait at typical times, but nothing worse than going out to dinner on land. Also if one restaurant is busy, you can always try one of the other two, especially as Taste and Savor are in close proximity.

  9. Just to clarify the tipping point.

You are charged the daily charge ($13.50 per person per day) which covers housekeeping and also the servers in the main dining room (amongst others). This can be altered, although I'm not sure of the current procedure for doing so.

When you buy drinks, or eat at a speciality restaurant, you are charged an 18% autogratuity. This can't be changed. If you have the dining or beverage package you pay the 18% on the value of the package.

So, you don't need to do anything if you don't want, and your tips are covered. Obviously, if you want to tip more then the staff will appreciate it.

You don't get a slip to sign these days when you buy a drink, so if you did want to tip bar staff extra then take some cash.

Thanks KeithJenner, apologies that my recollection was out-of-date.

  10. I sailed solo on BA two years ago and loved it, so much so that I'm sailing her again next month. My worldview is that we can always find something to critique or complain about in any situation, and on a board like CC it can seem like those criticisms are outweighing the good. People are less inclined to write about the "I had a nice time and nothing bad happened" situations than their personal episode of "Gordon Ramsey's Cruise Ship Nightmares" (not a real show, but in case Gordo happen to lurk on cruise ship message boards: Call me, we'll make it happen!). People then tend to comment on those disaster stories, pushing more of them to the top.

When I was on Breakaway, I found the staff to be incredibly friendly and helpful, my cabin was comfortable, the food was very good (as far as cruise fare goes) and my wait for a table was minimal. I was kept well-imbibed, entertained, and the best part was that I got to spend nearly 3 days in one of my favorite places on the planet: Bermuda. My only criticism was that my room was located next to a housekeeping closet, so there was a bit more hustle and bustle noise than I expected in the morning, but nothing too bad. Cruise reviews are like belly buttons; almost everyone has them, and they're all bound to be different from yours in some way. Enjoy your cruise and come to your own conclusions...

...and if all else fails, ask the bartender to make you a Bermuda Triangle. After 3 or 4 of those you won't have a care in the world!

  11. My family and I will be cruising on the Norwegian Breakaway to Bahamas in October-November 2017 and we have some questions that I can't seem to find definitive answers on. Hopefully some posters can help out.

2.) We have a 13 and 14 year old who will probably like to explore the ship on their own (ie...visit teen club, sports deck, etc...). Since the Uptown Grill has been changed to Margaritaville and is now an a la carte menu, I guess they will have to go to the buffet if they want a burger, slice of pizza or snack without an upcharge. I read that O'Sheehan's is complimentary, but can 2 teenagers go in and get a snack on their own? I saw that they had wings and burgers, I'm just not sure if they would be allowed to go in there without us. My kids are very well behaved, but I don't want to make other passengers uncomfortable.

3.) Tipping: We have only cruised on Disney, so you had the same wait staff your entire cruise and knew exactly where your gratuity money goes. How does that work with the specialty dining rooms? Do you tip in the Specialty dining rooms? Do you tip at Taste/Savor or are they the same main dining room? Do you tip at O'Sheehans when getting food? I just want to make sure that everyone is compensated when they should be, but I also don't want to break the bank by tipping when we shouldn't be.

Thank you in advance for any advice. Also if you can think of anything else that might be beneficial, please feel free to include.

I sailed on BA in 2014, so I can address points 2 and 3:

O'Sheehans has two sections, the bar/game area and a more traditional dining area. They should be able to get a table and order what they like in the "restaurant", if they try at the bar they may be asked to move to the dining area.

Tipping on Breakaway is optional, as you'll be charged roughly $14/person/day to cover all gratuities. If you feel someone has gone above and beyond, when the slip comes to sign a drink/meal/etc to your room, there is a tip line where you can add an additional gratuity.

Hope that helps, I'm sailing on Breakaway again next month so let me know if you have any other questions!

  12. Sofas! And in bottles no less. Now, that's impressive. Well done.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

The trick is you have to build the sofa in the bottle, piece by piece, for it all to fit. The hardest part is loading the tiny nail gun.

I'm interested to see how 5 Hour Energy gets handled when I sail out of NYC next month. I wouldn't consider it a beverage, may try putting a few bottles in my shaving kit and making the best of it.

  13. Glad to find out I'm not the only late twenty-something that worries about these kind of things. I'm 29 and I've been on 10+ cruises with family over the years, but also did the Breakaway solo to Bermuda in 2014, and am actually headed back on board in February to escape the cold and go to Florida and the Bahamas. Not the best ports, but I'm mostly looking for a relaxed week in the sun, so the price was perfect.

  14. I'm sailing on Breakaway in late February, and right now if you book Haven you get UBP, SDP, Internet Package, Photos, Shore Excursion Credits and Casino Credit. But it's $1700 more than any other cruise fare

You can also get the Internet, photos, and casino credit, along with a combination of 2 UBP/SDP/Excursions/Internet for most other non-inside fares fares
