  1. Ah, so you don't "get" it. I get that. I don't "get" golf.....but I don't get snarky about people who love it, and I don't intimate that they're wasting their time or money either.

HA! I don't "get" a lot of things people spend lots of money on, but that is just me... luxury vacations, well, I totally get those! :)

As for being young on a luxury cruise, we took our first Seabourn Cruise a couple of years ago and were 37 and 38. There was another couple our age, but we spent a of time with people much older than us. They were lots of fun!

This Dec. We will be going on one of the "larger" Seabourn Ships, the Quest, and I imagine it will be a similar experience. Alas, I will be celebrating my 40th birthday on the trip (even though the actual day isn't until shortly after our return) so talk of ages will not be particularly appealing to me!

    Go, and enjoy!

  2. (And, believe me, I would be quite cheerful if I met a straight passenger who asked, "So if you guys can't get legally married, is there something I could do to help change that?" Hasn't happened yet.)

I think that most people that would ask that question already know the answers. I am straight, yet support HRC and other organizations/events that care about equal rights. (Not "you can get married but we're going to call it something else" crap, or "well, most people can do... " crap...)

I'm sure there are plenty of people that would be pro-equality and haven't the foggiest idea who to vote for or how to help make it happen. You could certainly enlighten them.

As for me, I live in a backwards-ass state, so it'll be a while in Florida, I'm afraid.

    Sorry for the thread drift...

  3. As a local, my recommendation for lunch is Blackfin Bistro at 918 Duval St. They have one of the best burgers on the island. Also, their escargot is delicious.

Another great place for a Cuban Classic, steak wrap, or grouper sandwich is Bistro 245 at the Westin Resort. If your ship ties up at Pier B, it's right at the bow lines.

Blackfin is great... both for burgers and fresh fish, sandwiches and even breakfast!

Over the weekend I had brunch/lunch at Croissants de France (full review coming soon on the blog) and it was surprisingly good. Excellent food and service.

  4. Since you asked for a local's advise, here it is: Go to Santiago's Bodega for great food at great prices. I also agree with Azur and Flaming bouy. 7 Fish is OK, but far to rushed to enjoy. Finally, there are many tourist traps in Key West often recommended by frequent visitors. Avoid them, and stick to recommendations from Locals. For good drinks, try the outside bar at La Te Da, or for a good wine bar, head to Vino's on Duval. Enjoy!

    Agree about Vino's, 100%

  5. Been to KW more than a dozen times. Here are our dinner favorites that won't break the bank:

Rooftop Cafe, Abondazza, Columbia Grace, El Siboney, Seven Fish, Blue Heaven.

    More $$--Louie's Backyard, Cafe Marquesa

El Siboney is good - but it is super casual... more of a diner than anything else. It is really good, though. Good suggestion!

Seven Fish has excellent food. They tend to rush you a bit, but the warm grouper roll is truly amazing!

Blue Heaven is always great. Be prepared to wait a long time. Have a snack before you go, especially if it is for breakfast (yes, the wait can be 90 minutes. yikes)

The Upper Deck at Louie's is also amazing and won't break the bank!

You can never go wrong with cafe Marquesa.

personally, I would pass on abbondanza - too many other good places for their mediocre (at best) service!

Do report back what you plan on trying, and after you have tried them!

  6. One more on the drinks side...

great places include Cork and Stogie (on upper Duval) for nice wine on the porch; The Porch on Caroline Street (it is behind door number 2, once inside the building) for an awesome beer selection; and Orchid Key bar, for one that is near-impossible to find!
