  1. Any success using magnets on the cabin walls?

Is it difficult getting a table for two in Anytime Dining without a reservation?

That would be good to know! I don't know why it seems to be so disturbing that you would want to dine alone with your companion. Even when we have had reservations for a table for 2, we are ALWAYS asked "would you mind sharing a table"

  2. Great information on this thread for a newbie to Holland America such as myself. We will be on Nieuw Amsterdam Nov 25, 2018 for it's Eastern Caribbean itinerary. From the info in posts on this thread I was able to call ship's services today and purchase the use of a Lido Cabana for all 7 days of our cruise.

The 2016 pricing is still good. It was $199 for us. Paid over the phone. My first experience with speaking to anyone from HA and it was a great experience. Very helpful. I was emailed a confirmation of my purchase and a brochure file.

According to the brochure the cabana includes a bowl of fresh fruit, sparkling wine, bottled water, and hot and cold towels. I don't know if that is just one day or every day for the sparkling wine and water.

We usually cruise RCCL and have had a great experience with them but have always wanted to check out HA.

Your attendants bring you new fruit, water and champagne each day. These cabanas are one of the main reasons we stay with HAL, and not try other cruise lines. We typically get at least a veranda, mostly a signature suite, but just having a place to go sit by the pool, enjoy the world going by, and not having to worry about getting a space in the shade, is worth every penny.

The attendants have always been wonderful and very attentive.

  3. Last Sept on the European we had a lido cabana. It was great for Alaska but don't think I would get it for a warm weather cruise. Not enouh air flow for me.

The koningsdam does not have any lido cabanas, only retreat cabanas. The koningsdam does have a bunch of nice couches and beds on the 2nd floor of the lido that feel a bit "cabana like"

    Is there shade up there?

  4. What is the difference between the Lido Cabana's and the retreat Cabana's? I know one must pay for the retreat Cabana because I just reserved one for upcoming cruise. Do you have to reserve and pay for the Lido Cabana's?

We were on the K-dam and they had what I would call loungers on a deck above the Lido pool, it was first come, first served. Is this the same thing? This will be our first time on the Eurodam.

The difference is the location. The Lido Cabanas are next to the pool on the Lido deck, they are along the side. The attraction to me is that you are guaranteed a space in the shade, and you are close enough to the pool to jump in when it gets hot. The Retreat cabanas are a deck or 2 up from the pool. They are much quieter, very few people up there.

The Lido cabana's suit my purpose just fine, I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to find lounge chairs with some shade, I don't have to sit elbow to elbow with strangers, and if I leave to get food, I don't have to worry about someone else taking my chair. That is worth the money to me.

  5. I simply cannot get beyond the "ick" factor of refillable soap in a public setting. I have no idea of who was there before me and what they may have done:eek: I am very cynical, I admit. But I need to opem my own toiletries. If HAL is too cheap to provide unopened soap, i guess I will have to bring my own!

  6. Forgive my ignorance, but I thought that public spaces, were indeed that, public.

As long as they are being used, I don't understand the issue? I always assume that those that are lounging in the lido or other public space are those that say "the room I get doesn't matter, I spend very little time there"

I did get annoyed at chair hogs by the pool, that reserved chairs and never showed up, but if someone got there before me, and occupied the space, good for them.

I solved that problem by getting a cabana. As long as someone is using it, it is their space.

I get at least a veranda, if not a suite, so that I don't have to sit in public all day, but that is my preference. Some people love the "hustle and bustle" To each their own.

  7. We rented those which were ok to keep us out of the sun, but they are "fixed in place" so no matter how early you get there, there will be a bunch of people who will drag their chairs right in front of you. You get a view of them and their chairs instead of the ocean. We have rented the "pop up tents" so we could have moved them, they have been the best option, but pretty uncomfortable to have to lay in the sand. It really has limited the time we can spend on the Island. I would much prefer an Umbrella rental we could use with a lounge chair. But that is the fair skinned,

    monster sunburner in me :(

  8. We have done neptune, signature, and plain verandas, and have had cabanas on board the ships with each, so you don't need a Neptune to get an onboard cabana. We love the Neptune..... the space... The large veranda....and the priorty boarding :). We don't do it every time, but it is a treat

  9. The products in the refillable containers are new, never used and untouched. All the garbage generated by the small containers is a real problem, especially out at sea.

I have noticed that they are partially filled, not all even, so my assumtion is they are left over from the last passenger. I will pass.
