  1. 10-19-2017 – San Juan Del Sur

We have the Hacienda Excursion today – however, I doubt if Judy will be going. A nasty cold coupled with a hot tender ride on potentially rough waters is not a viable option. So I will probably jump on the tour and see what’s up. Seriously contemplating taking a single point and shoot camera and NO BACKPACK! You know, the way we used to go touristing…no wipes, no bug juice, no first aid kit, no towel, no water, no duct tape, no pens, no backup batteries, no charging cords…

    We’ll see…Later!

We board the Island for our PC cruise when you finally get to Port Everglades. Been following faithfully and look forward to your report of the Hacienda Excursion. We haven't decided what to do in San Juan Del Sur and the Hacienda tours are still on our "possible" list.

    Great "Live".

    Thanks

  2. Today was proof that no plan survives first contact with the enemy!

Planning went right out the window as soon as the Moon started to pass in front of the Sun.

Nikon D810 on a tripod-----Sun was to high in the sky to track. Filters made it too dark to correct at the nearly 90 degree angle.

So out comes the point and shoot Canon SX730SH and hand hold the $2.00 solar glasses to the lens.

  3. Just over 4 months to go for our Diamond Princess cruise. Still enjoying my Hero 5, mainly doing a lot of time lapses lately working out the best settings. It is really time now for me to buy a Karma Grip, read many negatives on bugs etc, but also many negatives on other Gimbals as well. I'm still fairly sure I want the Karma, so those of you who have one, are you still happy with it?.

I'm very happy with mine. It makes a huge difference when shooting "walk around" type videos. The primary use of my Hero 5 is still for Time Lapses. I haven't shot a T/L using my Karma...but I am considering it for my upcoming Panama Canal Cruise. Mostly for the additional battery capability in the Karma. Keep in mind most of the other Gimbals will not add to the Hero 5 battery capacity.

  4. Hope the OP doesn't mind, but they are questions I can answer, Mark.

    1. The butlers and waiters are more than willing and happy to take photos for you. In fact, they get asked so much, they're actually very good at it.

    2. There are stairs as well as an elevator that will take you to the pool deck.

Thanks Bea, You are always helpful. Can you give me an idea where the stairs are? Stairways, and which elevators, go where, are confusing on the deck plans.

  5. PART FIVE

Questions--Ask away and I will see if I can answer.

Thanks for taking the time to write this very informative review. I enjoyed it alot.

I do have a couple of questions.

    1. With the lack of Photographers in the Y/C. Do you think the Butlers or Staff would take "Formal Photos" using our camera?

    2. We have booked one of the square cabins on Deck 16. Is there a stairway up to the Y/C pool? Or do you have to use the elevator? (May help with my anticipated weight gain)

    Thanks Mark

I guess I will find out more on August 15 when I fly back to NJ........glad I have TSA Pre now and glad I only travel with one body now that retirement is here.

I saw the writing on the wall and signed up for TSA Pre just for this reason....

But come on...Wouldn't it be kinda fun....Unpack the Pelican 1510 and the computer bag into individual bins....It would be a "photography train" going through the scanner.

  7. That is just 15, it may well be that other decks are completed, hoping to get a few from other decks.

Fincantieri will no doubt be bringing in workers from their many other yards as the finish line gets closer.

    Mid August for Sea Trials.

    sidari,

I'm following the progress of this build with great expectations. Thank You and all the other "shipyard spies" that have been keeping us all up to date.

    Just for you......

  8. "Favorite" is such a fleeting status. I have to admit that when I browse through the old cruise photos, I am a fickle friend to my photos.

    Here's the latest "favorite":

    Dave

    I agree Dave.

It's been a few months since our last cruise and a few more before our next. So to "sate my cruise bug" I've been browsing photos of past cruises and came across a few "New" favorites.

  9. I will be cruising to Bermuda this July on the Breakaway. It will be our second cruise (first was last year to Alaska). My primary camera is a Canon d70. Last year, I purchased the Tamron 16-300 to use as a walkabout as well as zoom lens for the trip. It worked well enough: got some really good whale watching shots, and my Glacier Bay pics are not bad.

I've never loved this lens--it's convenient, but it's not great in low-light, and isn't spectacularly sharp in general. Would it be worth considering renting a micro 4/3 camera for my still photos since I'm not loving this Tamron lens? Would there be something smaller/lighter/better quality that I could try out? Or should I just stick with what I have and consider a different walkabout lens.

For a water/sports camera, I currently have an Olympus TG-4. This is a great little camera for the beach/under water. We will be doing some active tours: parasailing, cave exploration/swimming, and cliff jumping (some small cliffs). I wonder if the Olympus Tough would be a good choice for these tours, or if a GoPro would be a worthwhile investment. The video quality on the TG-4 is poor (would do a lousy job for parasailing), though it does take decent stills.

    TIA for any suggestions.

Sorry I'm late responding to this question.

I've encountered the same not great but good results from my Tamron 28-300 full frame lens.

My first first fix was to go back to carrying my f1.4 nifty fifty in addition to the Tamron for low light or any shots I wanted more control over depth of field.

My final fix was to replace the Lens with a higher quality "branded" f2.8 zoom lens . The problem is expense and I've gotten so use to carrying and using my 50mm that I will probably never go far without it.

    Now to GoPro.

I have a Hero 5 and a Session 5. Great little video cameras. Sturdy, waterproof without a housing, easy to carry around even with a gimbal if you use one, and take great wide angle Time Lapse. If you shoot action video I would recommend them. If you want it for occasional video, stills, or any video that you need good ambient audio, there are better alternatives.

The only thing I'm using my GoPros for now are for stabilized video (gimbal with voice over) and Time lapse.

  10. Also my favorite ship in the fleet.

I've done two 14+ day Transatlantic cruises on her. Very different than a port intensive Med cruise. I just loved all the relaxing Sea days on the Spirit. Great small ship and always a great crew.

  11. However, my VERY favorite part is seeing men in dress military uniforms and in kilts.

I know both are very heavy to pack and so don't expect to see them any more on Celebrity so I am extremely grateful to Princess for keeping them!

I'm retired military and wish my Mess Dress still fit. If you think buying a Tux is expensive......Let's just say the only way I will ever get to wear my uniform again is to lose a lot of weight.

We started cruising with NCL and the "Casual" has sort of worn off. Granted even on NCL you will still see a few men in tuxedos or dark suits. Many more women dress than the men.

We are looking forward to being able to get "gussied up" on Princess.

  12. Thank you for your insightful post. I see NCL charging more for less and MSC a better value, at least on paper. Looking forward to booking in the future. I am excited.

Is it any wonder looking to book MSC YC online says SOLD OUT. And NCL is not and going to bids. It is so obvious.

MSC does offer another Suite Experience for those that don't want or need the "Ship within a Ship" experience.

On the New Builds...Seaside...Meravigila...Bellissima... They offer some beautiful Aurea Suites. Many larger than the Y/C suites. Some two bedroom suites. Some two deck suites, and many with private hot tubs on the balcony.

The Aurea Experience still comes with a drink package and anytime dining. So if you can live without the Ship within a ship, or are used to Princess or Carnival Suites (Few to No Suites perks). An Aurea Suite may fill in well when the Yacht Club is Sold out.

  13. I think I'm going to try MSC next, or Celebrity's Edge ship. The only concern I have with MSC is, I thought Ire ad that the unlimited drink package they have in the yacht club is only good in the yacht club so if you leave the suite area, drink package doesn't apply? Am I wrong about that? Seems like I must be....but these days you never know.

The Y/C drink package is now ship wide (as of a few weeks ago). There are some restrictions as to what you can order at the bars outside of the Y/C. I haven't seen or heard what those restrictions are as of yet. I don't imagine that they will be very restrictive.

  14. Since the Yacht Club on Seaside will be larger, offering larger family suites, and also insides, do you think the atmosphere of the Yacht Club will change?

I haven't been in the YC yet (sailing on Divina soon), but one of the reasons I booked it was because I kept reading all the complaints about unruly children (and adults) in the Haven on NCL.

NCL does a lot of "upselling" to the Haven. Maybe that's why.

However, in reading some posts here, it appears MSC does the same.

With a larger area to fill, do you anticipate a different experience?

    mafig,

My experience with unruly children in the Haven was mainly confined to the pool. Being that the pool area dominates the Haven area and being indoors, a group on loud children can affect a large number of passengers that are trying to enjoy the adjoining areas.

The interior portion of the Y/C doesn't have the same appeal to children that the pool deck has. Thus, other than the One pool, the rest of the Y/C should be calm.

  15. Thank you. Would you please be anle to look at your ship details and let me know if Deck 16 has the actual Yacht Club bar, pool, restaurant? Or, would these be lovated on Deck 18?

What deck is the spa? But, I want to book this week but want to be in the actual Yacht Club proper.

    Thank you so much!

The post above this one outlines what is on each Y/C deck.

The Yacht Club on MSC is not like the Haven on the NCL "away" class ships.

The pool is not enclosed within the ship like the Haven pool. It is the entire forward portion of the top most deck.

The cabin areas are the decks below. With the Lounge or Restaurant (Seaside) at the forward portion of their respective decks.

The Spa is located directly below the Y/C on deck 8. The current build plans show a dedicated elevator between the Y/C and the Spa like on the Divina.

  16. In July 2016 I started a thread titled: "Is there still any Value in a NCL Cruise?"

That thread can be found here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2376227

I wonder if any of the cheerleaders from that thread are still on NCL bandwagon.

We like many other Platinum Plus Suite cruisers have abandoned NCL for MSC and other cruise lines.

In my eyes NCL has removed all additional "value" they had in their Suites. Now they are just plain price gouging with the inflated Suite pricing and now additional "gratuities"

Do they think the butlers won't suffer from this added cost? I've seen too many "upsells" stiff butlers to think otherwise.

    Goodbye NCL
