  1. They just added bottled water to the list of beverages available on Cheers! So they have to make their money back somewhere. And the value of Cheers! Just went up with no price increase if you pre-purchase it.

I guess ;) I would never purchase cheers. Couldn't imagine spending that much on drinks, but that's just me. Then again, I don't buy water on the ship either.

  2. Am I on another world here? Do you know what the OH costs are?? You do realize we live in a planet that prices go up every year for pretty much EVERYTHING! My home internet just went up $10 a month. I am getting the same service. Do you know WHY it went up? Do you understand this process?

In still waiting for you to answer the other questions about your IT and Website work. Maybe, I doubt it, but maybe you will understand and learn something

I'm not going to go into my business here... it really has no place in this discussion.

I don't know exactly what it costs them but neither do you. The price going up $1 in 6 months, I just see it going up and up from there. At what point do you say it's too much?

I don't know why you're coming down so hard on me. There's many people complaining about the cutbacks and diminishing service. There's a whole thread dedicated to complaining about the $1 increase in water. I'm not a complainer here. There are few things that bother me at all and even then I won't go on and on about them. I'm done talking about this, I made my point.

  3. Are you saying the space used to store the water doesn't cost them money and they don't pay the employees who deliver the water??? Because I didn't say they buy a warehouse for storing or hired employees for the sole purpose of delivering water. I said these were OH/indirect costs....but costs of having water delivered to your room just the same. Just like in manufacturing you don't just have the cost of the raw materials and direct labor as the total cost of your product. You have to include the overhead/indirect costs such as your material handler and your electric/heat for the space you are manufacturing your product and storing your inventory. (Spoken like the accountant I am in a manufacturing company.)

Absolutely not. I'm saying they were already paying for those things and didn't need to raise the cost to cover the OH. If $2.99 didn't cover all the costs they would have charged more to begin with.

  4. Umm space to store that water cost money in OH, just like inventory in a factory, and they have to pay the employees who deliver that water to your room. You really have no clue.

Lol, so you're telling me they had to buy a warehouse for the sole purpose of storing water? And they hired employees who's only job is delivering that water? Oh, please...

  5. How do you know that? How do you know the cost of buying the water didn't go up? And again, my statement stands. You feel they shouldn't make money and have no idea how a business runs

Being that I own my own business I DO know how to run a business. I have been fine with most of the changes on Carnival. This is one change that I do feel is nickel-and-diming because they are now prohibiting people from bringing any water bottles on and so many are being forced to pay the higher price which will probably just keep rising. I'm not one of those that would say it doesn't affect me so I don't care. I just think it's wrong. You can keep cheerleading... but it doesn't change the fact that all raising the price of the water did was increase their profits even more.

  6. So let's break it down here. If we go by your configuration, the 12 pack of water that carnival buys cost them $1.44. They sell it to you for $2.99. That leaves $1.55

Now, they pay to have it stored on the ship. They pay to have it delivered to your room. Among other costs such as tax, delivery, etc.

So let's go to the light side and say it cost for all of that $.20 a case.

Carnival, for all of that is making $1.35 on a case of water. Less than what one bottle of water is sold for in a store.

They save you the trouble of lugging it on also.

So, you have a problem with this??

I personally don't have a problem with it at all because I think the ship water is just fine. I live in Vegas which has some of the worst tap water in the US so I never drink from the tap at home. It's refreshing to not have to buy it on the ship.

What makes you think Carnival has to pay for delivery and storage on their own ship? Also, there is no tax on water... And I'm going by what I pay for bulk, I'm sure that Carnival is paying less.

  7. I can tell you have no idea how a service business works. Have you ever been to a gas station, CVS, pizzaria? Have you ever bought 1 small bottle of water? What's the cost? $1? $1.50?

Do you understand that it costs Carnival money to buy the water? Pay the employees to put it on board? To store it? To deliver it to your room?

At $2.99 for a case of 12, how much do you really think Carnival is making?

Do you understand that this is a business? That the idea is to make money? Do you also understand that prices of things go up? It's the way of the world.

Are you one of those people who complained about the little chocolates not being on the pillows? How do you know that the price wasn't raised and Carnival thought it was to high?

Why do people always think they should get something for free??

Do you work? Why should you get a raise for doing the same job you have been doing for the past 10 years? Because the cost of living rises, you need more money. Why in your mind does this not also apply to Carnival or any business?

You may pay that much for a single bottle but it's much cheaper when bought in bulk. I pay 3.79 for a case of 32 bottles. That equates to about $.12 a bottle, you can sure as hell bet that Carnival is making $$ off their bottled water.

  8. Here's another one for anyone that might have to fly to their port and can use Southwest.

    1) Sign up for Target red card (credit or debit)

    2) Purchase discounted secondary market gift cards (Target) from a gift card reseller. I use Raise.com or Cardpool.com most of the time but there are others out there.

    • Target discounted cards vary but should be between 4-8% off

    3) Register for a Target account and enter your red card as the default payment.

    4) Place Southwest gift cards into your cart. There may be a limit on how many gift cards you can purchase in one transaction but you can just do multiple transactions. Proceed to check out. Make sure your Red card is the default payment.

    5) Chose pay with a gift card. Enter and apply up to 4 gift cards at a time.

    6) You should see your 5% red card discount and NO taxes or shipping fees. Some have reported taxes being charged or the discount not showing. If that happened clear all your cookies/history and try again.

This has to be done at Target.com in order to use the 5% redcard discount when paying with a gift card.

Using this method, you can save anywhere from 8.8% - 12.6% (depending on your secondary market Target gift card savings) on your Southwest flight.

    This is great! Thanks.

  9. Definition of nickle and dime.

I wouldn't consider those things to be nickel and diming even in the "drain and destroy" sense. Tasteless pillow chocolates that mostly got thrown away, sheer curtains?, water is still free on board and perfectly safe. The price of liquor, maybe, but I don't know how it compares to booze on other lines.

  10. We are flying into Houston to travel on the MAGIC last weekend in March. What is the best way to get from Airport to Terminal.

    1) is uber available and easy to get.. or is there a private shuttle anyone recommends.

Thanks in advance for the helpful answers

I don't think you can get Uber for the return trip. There's a thread discussing transportation here. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2314409

  11. We are arriving at HOU on Saturday, sailing Sunday and returning a week later. Renting a car for eight days plus parking ($49 for the week) is $150 more than using shuttles but offers the car to run errands before and allows us a later return to the airport for our late flight. We can store the bags in the rental while we explore Galveston Sunday morning.

How many of you are there?

  12. I was wondering is it all that serious to bring soda and/or water, I mean is it really gonna break me(like saving 20 dollars for soda.) I have heard that the ship water is drinkable, so what the deal with this. We're doing Cheers so not worried, just curious.

The water is drinkable. I live in Vegas and will not drink the tap water here but never had a problem with water on a ship.

  13. By definition nick·el-and-dime

    NORTH AMERICAN informal

    verb

    gerund or present participle:*nickel-and-diming

put a financial strain on (someone) by charging small amounts for many minor services.

So, therefore, no more pillow chocolates, sheer curtains, not allowing bottles to be brought on and the cost of liquor on board cannot be considered nickel-and-diming.

  14. I don't believe taking a burger already offered, and putting a brand name on it, can be called an addition.

But they are certainly not free. They are included in your fare. As well as self serve. You get your own. Johnny Rockets is served to you in their restaurant, so you are paying a tip for that service, but that burger is also included in the fare.

But not a fan of JR. They were dried out hockey pucks as well.

By the way, if I recall correctly, most if not all the 2.0 enhancements were simply putting brand names to things already offered.

Guy's Burgers are completely different and better (for most) than the old Lido grill ones. It has nothing to do with the name for me, but how they're made and all the extra toppings. Just because you have to go up and get it yourself doesn't mean it's not a great addition. As far as it not being free, of course it's included in your fare. Nothing is really free... it's either included or it's extra and included is most definitely better. From what I've heard JR is pretty bad and $7.95 is close to what I'd pay on land for a great burger. So, are you saying that people don't tip at JR or is the tip for JR included in automatic gratuities? I can't believe that they're charging a mandatory $7.95 gratuity for one lousy burger...
