Safe to go to Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins through Royal Caribbean?

We're cruising to Cozumel on a family vacation in December. Daughters want to go to Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins on an excursion through Royal Caribbean. With the bad press about Playa del Carmen, I'm a little nervous to go there. We also love the beach. Will have kids from age 11 - 21 with us. Any suggestions? Never cruised the western Caribbean before. Also going to Grand Cayman. Thanks!

But ifship is offering excursion, issues with ferries have been mitigated.
