Weather in October

I know there is always the chance of being "unseasonably" hot or cold, or wet, and I know others have probably been there in October, so was just wondering how the temperature would "normally" be. Just interested.....thanks Sue

Sue - Where are you going in October. We were in China in Oct 2002. It was cool in Beijing, fairly warm on the Yangtze River, in Xian and in Shanghai. We could wear shorts everywhere but Beijing. A light jacket and/or sweater was good for Beijing.

Thanks for replying PaulWN.We are going on the Oct. 12th cruise from Osaka to Beijing, with Princess.. Then 3 days in Beijing. Now I know approximately how it will be, temperature wise. The ports are Nagasaki, Vladivorstok, Russia, Pusan, S. Korea, Shanghai, China and Dilian...

I saw you had taken NCV cruise up the coast of Norway? We did that last year...out of Bergen..on the Finnmarken. Did you enjoy it? We did...very much so we were planning to do it again this year..were actually booked for this past Feb, as I wanted to see the Northern Lights, but changed our plans for health reasons at the time. So we diecided to go to the Orient instead.

Also saw you cruised the Danube Christmas market and River Cruise?? How was that? My son and I went to Munich this Dec., for the Christmas Markets for 1 day...yes, I know it was crazy, but it was all the time we had. We had alot of fun! But I didn't know they had a cruise for that. Could you tell me where it originated and what cruise line? and if its worth it?

Sue - We haven't done either the NCV or the Danube yet. We're going to Norway in May on the Midnatsol. We're doing the 17 nights with 2 nights in Oslo pre cruise and 2 nights in Bergen post cruise.

We're going on the Danube in December of this year.

We're just doing the post cruise in Vienna, not the pre cruise in Munich.

The only thing we didn't like about the China trip was that it was very hazy except for the day we took the boat ride in the three small gorges. The sun was just a small dot thru the haze most of the trip. We also had a little rain in Shanghai. Not enough to bother, just still wasn't sunny. However, except for that, the trip was fantastic.

PaulWN ...sorry...just got excieted when I saw NCV and didn't even check out the date. Hardly hear of anyone going on that cruise, and could never find any info. regarding the itinerary, etc....Its quite different from the typical cruise lines, but we loved it. We were not bored one bit, even tho there was no entertainment or casinos, etc. What a relaxing cruise with beautiful, beautiful scenery. Take note of all their bridges, and how quickly they were built! Not like here in the USA where it takes forever for the plans to be implemented, etc.

I took the Radisson "Seven Seas Mariner" from Tokyo-Hong Kong this past October. We called at Osaka, Hiroshima, Dalian, Beijing and Shanghai. It was very warm (75 - 90 degrees) the entire time, with several days of rain and about 6-7 days of sun (out of a 14-day cruise). PaulWN is very correct - even on sunny days in China it will feel cloudy because of the haze.

You're going to love Asia. It took my breath away! Enjoy!

Thanks TxAquarian...I didn't realize it could be that warm...wow...when you were in Dalian and Shanghai, did you do tours from the cruise, or go out on your own?? Sue

Sumar76, when we were in Dalian, we did the ship organized shore excursion. Dalian is a beautiful city, but it seems as if it would have been difficult to navigate independently. It is hard to find any English speaking people (both locals and tour guides), and we were held on the ship for an hour by Chinese officials (military) for no apparent reason. It seems as if they just wanted to give a ship full of wealthy Americans a hard time. What I liked about Dalian were all the parks and greenery. You actually see people out flying Chinese kites. It is very lively and has some stunning beach areas. The port area is very scary, but once you get beyond that, you will fall in love with this town.

While in Shanghai (on an overnight call), we did a Radisson shore excursion on the first day. We went out on our own that night, as well as the next day. It was extremely difficult to communicate with any of the taxi drivers, but that just added to the fun sense of adventure. Everyone was very kind and accomodating. Shanghai is amazing! You will most likely dock at The Bund, where on one side you have the old part of the city and on the other is the modern, high-tech section. The old part looks much like a European city such as Rome. The modern part is an explosion of music, towering skyscrapers (including the Hyatt Regency which is one of Asia's tallest buildings and the famous Pearl Tower) and bustling energy. I don't know if you will be there at night, but the sky is filled with music and searchlights. It is a 24-hour town.

I am jealous you are going. I would love to return!!

TxAquarian..thanks for the info re: Dalian and Shanghai....will definately not try to go on our own in Dalian..and actually we will only be in Shanghai from 7am to 6pm, so will not be there at night. I don't know why they don't give you more time in the ports. It seems like every cruise I take they shorten port time....Well, it will be great to see anyway..Sue

Gail - We were on Victoria. Here's some pics. From their website info, I think they no longer use the ship we were on. It looks like all the ships are newer.
