Artemus Posted September 4, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 4, 2017 I think I have seen that ships don't open their casino until leaving The Chesapeake Bay. Does anyone have any info regarding this? How late at night would the casino open? How about the last night, how late is the casino open? I am thinking about sailing Grandeur out of Baltimore. Thanks in advance. renjrusa Posted September 4, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2017 The casino didn't open on the night of departure. We sailed at 4pm in June and due to Maryland law the casino is not allowed to open until in International waters.. Same with the night sailing into Baltimore... vp1 Posted September 5, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 5, 2017 Sailed in mid August (about 3 weeks ago) on Carnival Pride from Baltimore. Casino was open the first night (about 6 or 7 PM). Not sure if it varies by cruise line. (We did have to pay "tax" on the comped casino drinks the first night, however. Not a big deal - less than $1/ drink, but it was odd to see that on the bill - much like Galveston, etc.)
Artemus Posted September 5, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted September 5, 2017 Thank you all for the info. I guess I'm as confused as ever. Two posters say the casino doesn't open the first night and one says it does. Is it a cruise line thing that determines when it opens?
totalee Posted November 12, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 12, 2017 The casino can open as soon as the ship passes under the key bridge leaving Baltimore. There is a special state law allowing it or any other cruise ship that will be traveling more than 200 miles away to open as soon as it leaves Baltimore Harbor and enters the Chesapeake Bay. maryred Posted December 21, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 21, 2017 It all depends on if the casino manager on board applies for and pays for the temporary gambling license for each cruise. The Carnival Pride always seems to have a large percentage of gamblers on board, so they tend to purchase for any port any licenses or permits to have their casino open as soon as permitted by local laws. Royal and Celebrity may use different logic or algorithms to determine if it is cost effective to open their casino if extra fees are involved.
