Tony C Posted January 22, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 22, 2005 We are on the Millennium Venice-Barcelona on 5/27/05. We are wanting to go to the Plaka while there, but don't necessarily want to do any of the shore excursions offered by Celebrity for that port. Anyone have any info on getting to the Plaka on our own? Thanks.
DocJohnB Posted January 22, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2005 Yep, Take the underground. There is a stop near the port of Piraeus and one in the Plaka. this may help http://www.travelinfo.gr/athens/transportation.htm
jezzdogg Posted January 22, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 22, 2005 Not sure about the undeground, but there are taxi's available that will take you there. When we stopped there 3 years ago, we just walked off the ship and were able to get a taxi to take us whereever we wanted for the day.
Tony C Posted January 22, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted January 22, 2005 Does anyone know what the approximately cost of the underground and/or a cab would be? And, are both safe to use?
Deb C. Posted January 22, 2005 #5 Share Posted January 22, 2005 If I remember correctly, the taxis in Athens were VERY reasonable (cheap)!:D
DocJohnB Posted January 23, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2005 Tony, Cost of taxi is probably about 20-25 Euro (one way). Cost of a day pass is about 3 Euro. Check out below. http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/ath/athens.htm The subway is safe, clean and efficient and the cost beats the heck out of a taxi. Both are very safe to use. IMO, the hardest part is taking the first step and using a foreign transport system. Once you do it, you will be glad you did. Also, Tony, the officers on Celebrity are, for the most part, Greek. Just ask one of them for advice regarding the metro vs taxi and they will gladly tell you.
