Catacombs of San Gennaro

No matter what you do it's a two-step process but it's pretty easy.

Across the street from the cruise port, on the east side of Piazza Municipio (the right as you're looking toward the castle with your back to the port) you'll find the entrance to the metro station Municipio.

Buy a TIC ticket at the station for 1,60 euro, this will cover both the metro and the bus. Be sure to hold onto the ticket for the entire journey. If fact, purchase both your outbound and return at the metro station in the morning, it will be easier than looking to buy the return later in the day. Only validate one on the way there, saving the other to validate when you get on the bus at the catacombs to return.

Take the metro, line 1, in the direction of Piscinola. Get off at the third stop, Museo.

Exit the station and head to your right toward the museum and the bus stop in front of it.

At this bus stop you can take any one of the following buses, they all go the same way and stop at the catacombs: 168, 178, 460, 604, or C63. Just get on the first one that comes.

You DO NOT need to stamp your ticket when you get on the bus, you did that in the turnstile when you got on the metro.

The bus will make an immediate right turn after pulling out from the museo stop onto Via Santa Teresa degli Scalzi. After one mile in a straight line it will go around a circle to the left, the first stop after this turn in the catacombs (on the other side of the street from the bus stop).

When you return just reverse the plan. The return bus stop is on the same side of the street as the catacommbs. If you have time you can walk part of the way back. You could get off at the museum or stay on a couple of more stops and get off at Piazza Dante. From there back to the cruise port is a straight line, pretty much, gently downhill and just a mile. Walk down Via Toledo, which becomes pedestrian and emergency vehicles only after a short while, all the way to Piazza Trieste e Trento (the royal palace, the opera house, the galleria, and piazza del Plebiscito all come together at this point). Turn left and pass in front of the opera house to Castel Nuovo, there is a pathway on the opposite side of the castel down to a traffic light on Via Acton that takes you right to the cruise port.

Happy to help.

Be sure to get the right ticket as they've been cracking down on people with the wrong ticket or without one.

You need the UNA TIC Integrato, for 1,60 euro in order to take both the metro and the bus.

There is also the UNA Aziendale for 1,10 euro but this is only good for one travel segment. If you buy this ticket you'd need two, one for the metro and one for the bus. The TIC Integrato is a better deal.
