Can anyone give advice about finding a ship that would have a dark place to go (away from light polution) to get a good look at the sky while out in the ocean - preferably on a more affordable line?

Along the same lines, I would love to get some information on how much light pollution to expect out in the middle of the gulf. I expect it will be less than where I live, but how dark is it?

Generally, there's no good place. Sometimes, there's an area at the back of the ship behind the funnel which is darker than elsewhere, but even there there are navigation lights, and smoke from the funnel.

On "Astronomy" cruises — especially to eclipses, the astronomy charter group will ask the ship's captain to darken an area of the ship, usually again this is towards the stern, behind the funnel.

I found the bow area was the darkest area on the ship - with no lights at all - on the Norwegian Dream last year. I was able to do some stargazing and photograph the sky.

I've read that you can go to the helicopter pad on some ships and see the stars well. I dont know though, my first cruise is this March.

I can't think of anything that excites a great sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything.

I was on the ryndham in the spring and they had great astronomy lectures and the a viewing on the top deck. Their sky deck offers shading from the lights they have to have on at night so the visibility was great. The lectures on the transatlantic s are great but don't know if it always an astronomy expert

I have often wished they would make a certain area or time to view the night sky where it is dark also and turn off as many lights as they can. However the front of the ship does offer a decent view. That area I believe is darker due to the bridge and navigating at dark. Was on the breeze and it was pretty dark but still of course some lights.
