I was on Avalon a couple of years ago and we stopped in Cologne. Generally you are there all day. You might be starting your tour around 8-8:30 and back on board by 5:00. Those are roughly the times that I remember. I remember sailing during dinner which was at 7:00.

Just returned from the oct 7th cruise from basel to amsterdam.

Had a bad experience in cabin 111, do not book this cabin.

It is very noisy due to the septic system on this ship. After 3 nights of no sleep was finally allowed to change to a different cabin on same deck but much improved.

We were on the Avalon Panorama in August, we arrived at Cologne around 8.30am, had our included tour, most places weren't open at that time, so it was a good time to be walking around. Had plenty of time to shop and look around on our own after the tour, then had lunch in a lovely cafe there, or could have gone back to the ship, then left Cologne in the afternoon. There is a big shopping area, along quite a few streets, pedestrian malls...pretty city, with the cathedral being the focal point. :)
