Private guide in Athens & Dubrovnik

Can anyone recommend a private guide for a small group to tour from the Athens port to the major attractions?

Thanks,

I used Piraeus Express for a private tour including lunch for 16 people from our roll-call and was quite happy with the service and guide. In fact we also used the related company Katakolon Express for our other port stop and both times the owner Stephen was there to ensure that we were happy and well taken care of.

We used Private Greece Tours with Nikos Loukas in July 2010 -- they were excellent... Always kept us ahead of the cruise ship crowds!

http://www.privateathenstours.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1

In 2010 -- it was 350 Euro for 6 hrs (300 for 4 hrs & 400 for 8 hrs) and they were able to accomodate 11 of us in a van. It came out to be less than $50 pp.This was ~60% the cost of the ships tour and we had our own van...

Here is the write-up my father did:

On Tuesday we were in Athens. We had arranged a tour through nikosloukas@privategreecetours.com, a touring company Kathy found on the internet through Cruise Critics. It was outstanding. Our tour guide, “Billy”, was knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating, and spoke excellent English. On the way into Athens from Pireaus (the port), Billy gave a running commentary of the area, history, politics, economy, educational system, etc., etc. He first took us to the Acropolis where we spent about two hours visiting the sites. This timing was quite fortuitous since we had plenty of time and very few people at this time of the morning. As we were leaving, the line to get in was extremely long. Then we went to the Temple of Olympian Zeus which was the largest temple of its time. Next we visited the Old Olympic Stadium which was built in 1896 for the beginning of the “Modern Olympics”. Here the boys got a chance to “run in the footsteps of history”. After that we were dropped off in Plaka, advertised as the oldest and most picturesque neighborhood of Athens. We spent about two hours there, having an excellent Greek lunch, walking the narrow pedestrian streets, and taking part in the obligatory local shopping. Billy then took us to the House of Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the changing of the guard. We were then delivered back to the ship after a long (7 hours) and interesting day.

Thanks,

We used Private Greece Tours in September and they were fantastic. Our guide/driver was Demos. I highly recommend them. We had the best time. Much less than the HAL tour and saw so much more. Go for it!

Just returned from a Med cruise, and we used AthensByTaxi.com as well for our group of 12. We had Paul for the day and he was GREAT! He provided excellent knowledge and information of Athens and we were very pleased with the tour. Very reasonably priced as well.

Can anyone recommend a private guide for a small group to tour from the Athens port to the major attractions?

Thanks,

We are cruising from Venice to the Greek Islands and I emailed Athensbytaxi and got this reply:

Dear Diane,

thank you for getting in touch with me. We are available and happy to be of service.

The taxi is a New, air-conditioned, E-class Mercedes and seats 4 passengers plus the driver comfortably.

For more than four passengers we use our new Mercedes minibus sprinter, which is fully air-conditioned, and very comfortable.

All tours are private with a very flexible itinerary.

Please note that we are also organizing private walking tours, and food tours. If you are interested please let me know so as to send you details.

The pick up from your ship, the full day Athens tour and the drop off at the port will cost 230 Euros for up to 4 passengers with the taxi and 380 Euros for up to 12 passengers with the minibus.

The pick up from your ship, the full day Athens & Cape Sounion tour and the drop off at the port will cost 250 Euros for up to 4 passengers with the taxi and 400 Euros for up to 12 passengers with the minibus.

The pick up from your ship, the half day tour and the drop off at the port will cost 150 Euros for up to 4 passengers with the taxi and 300 Euros for up to 12 passengers with the minibus.

I would suggest starting the tour as soon as you disembark so as to avoid the beat of the heat and the crowd at the site of the Acropolis.

Entrance fees to the archaeological sites, licensed tour guide, and food are not included in the prices.

If you are interested in a tour in Katakolon as well please let me know so as to send you quotes for a minibus.

Below follows a list of suggested hire options and most popular tours which can be altered according to your wishes. You will discuss about it with the driver when you meet, make changes if you wish and cover as many sites as time allows. If this is your first time in Athens I would recommend the Full Day Athens Tour. Visiting Cape Sounion is very nice but you will spend 3 hours in the car because it is 68 Km each way.

- Full Day Athens Tour includes a visit to: The Acropolis, The New Acropolis Museum, The Temple of Zeus, The Panathenaic Stadium (the original stadium built in the 1863 for the first modern Olympic games in 1896), The Hill of Lycabettous, The Old Palace, The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and The Changing of The Guards, The Plaka for lunch, and finally The Greek Agora, The Roman Agora and The Tower of Winds.

- Full Day Athens and Cape Sounion Tour includes a visit to: The Acropolis, The New Acropolis Museum, and finally Cape Sounion which includes a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road of the Saronic Gulf passing through some of Athens most beautiful suburbs (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza). In Cape Sounion you will visit The Temple of Poseidon [5th century B.C] with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the world (on a clear day you can see at least seven islands) and you will have lunch by the sea.

- Half Day Athens Tour includes a visit to: The Acropolis, The New Acropolis Museum, The Temple of Zeus, The Panathenaic Stadium (the original stadium built in the 1863 for the first modern Olympic games in 1896), and finally The Old Palace, The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and The Changing of The Guards.

Please note that the drivers are not professional licensed tour guides and so they cannot tour the archaeological sites or museums with you.

However, they know Greek history and mythology and can tell you about the sites on the way there, but their knowledge is very limited.

If you are interested in history then it is highly recommended to hire a professional licensed tour guide to tour the sites with you at an extra charge.

Please let me know so as to arrange it in advance. For groups I highly recommend to hire a professional licensed tour guide.

The professional English speaking licensed tour guide charges 180 Euros for a half day tour and 250 Euros for a full day tour and I can book him in advance.

If you want, though, you can hire a guide for the Acropolis only (extra charge 100 Euros for 2 hours) or the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Museum (extra charge 180 Euros for 4 hours).

The entrance fees per person are: 12 Euros in total for the archaeological sites in Athens (Acropolis Site, Greek Agora, Theatre of Dionysos, Kerameikos, Temple of Zeus, Roman Agora, Tower of Winds), 5 Euros for the New Acropolis Museum, 4 Euros for Cape Sounion. Children under the age of eighteen (18) do not pay entrance fees.

Hope it's of interest

Di

I went with Paul and the Dimitris with greektaxi/pktravel twice last year and loved them. They are really sweet and knowledgeable as well as very passionate about their city. There prices are excellent for small groups and we were in a 16 seater van instead of a bus. I highly recommend them.

In Dubrovnik, I and a few other people took a taxi for the "panaramic tour" which I highly recommend. I got some awesome pictures. We walked the wall on our own and that is something I really recommend that you do.

We used Athens By Taxi/PK travel a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic day. Constantine was our driver, and he was great about giving us information about the sites and making sure we had a no-stress day, seeing more than we could have on our own. It was one of the best days of our trip.

Hi smallestdog,

Did you opt for the escorted tour for 25 euros or the guided tour for 35 euros?

We are going to book the tour as it seems perfect for us, but not sure which to go for.

Just to confuse things further, I've just received an email from them stating the prices for each, but then in brackets they state prices do not include a licensed guide!

This is making me think we should just book the escorted.

Thanks. :)
