goldenrod Posted September 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2009 Did not look like forty foot waves, 20 maybe. Hardly saw any whitecaps, we caught the tail end of a Typhone off Japan had 46 ft. waves and the sea looked like one big whitecap, the ship was 3 hours late getting into port because it had to slow down so much. The onboard television channel with the weather conditions was reporting gale force winds and waves up to 40 feet.

WindrunnerII Posted September 20, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 20, 2009 This is a home video of the Norwegian Spirit encountering 40 foot waves returning to NYC from the Caribbean in January 2007. The TV channel may have been reporting waves of up to 40 ft, but the ones in the vide look to be 16 to 18 foot rolling swells. That's not to say that those sea conditions don't make for a fun ride!
