Power Boat Rental Question

We are thinking about renting a power boat in St Thomas for a half day. Has anyone ever done this? Did you make reservations in advance? Did you visit other islands? Can you tell us about the rental cost? Is it like a car where you can also get insurance? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
