bus/trip to Cancun from Playa

We will be in port in Playa del Carmen in Feb. 2010 and wanted to get a bus to Cancun to see the city and beaches for the day. Any ideas how to do it easily and on the cheap?

The least expensive means, but also reasonable in means, is to go by bus. In Playa del Carmen there are two bus terminals . . . you'll want the one on the tourist strip closest to the ferry terminal It is on Fifth Avenue at Juarez. Go inside and (facing the rear of the terminal) on the left-hand side is the platform and a small ticket booth that handles travel to Cancun. No reservations are required, and buses operate very frequently throughout the day. The ticket price is 38 pesos one-way (about $3), and the trip takes 1 hour 20 minutes. The name of bus company is Autobuses de Oriente ("Eastern Buses"), usually abbreviated ADO. http://www.ado.com.mx

In Cancun you'll arrive in the downtown bus terminal, just off of Tulum at its intersection with Uxmal. The hotels are a bit distant so you'll need to take a local bus from the bus terminal to the hotel zone. Walk out the front door of the bus terminal and turn right on Pino, walking one-half block to Tulum. You can board bus route R1 on Tulum, heading southbound (that would be towards your right); the bus should be marked "Hoteles" or "Zona Hotelera." The fare is 6-1/2 pesos (about 50 cents). The bus will go along Kukulcan, where you'll find all the resort hotels and beaches.

Reverse the above for the return trip.

There may be some van operators who will make the trip directly without the need for a transfer in Cancun, but you'll likely pay much more and require reservations for particular times.
