Eastern Caribbean with a 15 month old

So I know that we are limited on what we can do with a baby, but I was hoping that someone has done Eastern Caribbean and will suggest the best places to take our DD.

We are going to San Juan, St. Thomas & St. Maarten.

DH and I have gone to St. Thomas and St. Maarten on our honeymoon. We ended up at Coki beach and Orient Beach. Orient Beach was absolutely beautiful. Anyways, I am just wondering if there are any other beaches that are great to experience with a child. Or even if there are some great beaches right off the port to easily get to.

But of course we are looking for suggestions other than beaches as well. I (Karen) love taking photos so I would love to get to some places that are great photo opportunities. Of course that all depends on a 15 month old!

Hi - I'm not going to have an answer for your question, rather I've got a question for you.

We're doing an 8 day cruise to the Eastern Carib. (St. Thomas, Antigua, Tortola, Nassau & San Juan) and we`re travelling with our 2 1/2 and 5 year old. I'm not sure if I should bring my car seats. Are you bringing yours. Some people say some of the taxis/buses don't even have seatbelts. The other thing is, do you lug your car seat on your excursions or to the beaches? Not sure what to do. any input you've got would be much appreciated!!!!

If you are docked at Crown Bay in St.Thomas, there is a charming little beach very close to the ship named Emerald Bay.It is a $4 (each) cab ride.It has a small bar, decent if small, bathrooms and I think, some food. The cab driver will come back and get you if you give him a time. There is shade too if needed and it is quiet .The shore line is a gentle, sandy slope to little waves.Babies will love it.Take a bucket and spade

PS Orient Beach rankes up there with Grand Anse Grenada in my view:)

I appreciate your problem. Most of the "cabs" on the beach runs are "Jitney" type;in other words and open, multiple bench seat formation. No seat belts to affix a car seat.Really have never seen seat belts in the motor cabs there.

On the jitney, you are wedged in so tightly everyone has to breathe in at the same time! Maybe a specialised tour would be your best alternative

  • 3 months later...

i got a constructive suggestion,do not take kids on vacations, unless they can remember the trip.It should be a time for you and yours to enjoy. I'm not trying to be rude,i love kids i have 4,it has been 14 yrs since me and my wife have vacationed alone so we deserve this,we have taken them everywhere else like, disney etc.

The Old City in San Juan has a million photo ops. The forts and city walls to the north of the city overlooking the Atlantic, and there is a walkway along the harbor to the west of the city "underlooking" the city walls.

St Thomas you might try a meal at St Peter's Greathouse which is pretty high up. They are rebuilding the Mountaintop restaurant which burned down. Or there is a tramway to a lookout SE of the Havensight pier.

St Maarten offers excellent photo ops of wrinkly old men S side of Orient Beach. Cover up 15-month old's eyes - trauma for life.
