Hotel in miami or ft. lauderdale???

Ok.. We are planning a cruise in April. We are flying in the night before and staying the day after. i heard that this is the best to do. We leave out of the Port of Miami. The airline tickets seem to be best out of ft. lauderdale so question is.. Is it best to stay in ft. lauderdale that night or to get a hotel in miami. And if so.. Any good decent hotels near the port of Miami?? This is my first cruise and im trying to get all things straightened out as soon as possible . Thanks....
