What do you recommend in Patmos?

We are visiting Patmos on our cruise of the Holyland this summer and was hoping to get some recommendations on what to do that day. What do you recommend we see? Are there any recommended beaches? We have been to several of the other Greek islands but have never been here and want to ensure that we make the best of the day. Any help is appreciated.

Patmos does not have the "splash" and "flash" of Mykonos and Santorini, but there are some nice options there. The good news is that it is not as crowded, jammed and/or over-run with the big, mega cruise ships. Nice and enjoyable in its style. Much of its fame is about the history there. Below are some pictures for the items we saw and enjoyed there.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Inside the church part of the Holy Monastery of St. John in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. It is part of a complex with a nice museum and art collection:

Above where you enter to see the famed cave of St. John, this art piece summarizes this history:

On Patmos, here are more from inside the church with its ceiling and around the Holy Monastery of St. John. You will see some ceiling highlights, its courtyards, bells, art treasures, etc.:

We are only here for the morning before sailing to Kusadasi. Is this doable on our own or should we do the ship tour? By the way- loved the pictures- thanks.

THANKS for the kind comments on the pictures! If you're interested in art and religious history, there is "logistics" involved getting from the port docking place up to the key places on the large hill. You could do it on your own, maybe, but it will take some added time getting up there and back. As I recall, it is not something that would be easy or quick to walk. Ship tours aren't always perfect and best, but they do make those logistics much easier and eliminate all of the worries and hassles. Given your tight schedule, I would consider the ship tour. Enjoy!
