Italy National Holiday

Has anyone had the experience of being in Rome on a National Holiday? I have just found out that our 1 full day in Rome is on Dec 8 which is a holiday. I have done some research and it seems that shops and banks are closed, but would all the tourist attractions be open. A few tour companies don't have anything available on that day, especially for the Vatican. Self guided tours are still an option.

Appreciate any help on this one.

Most of the tourist site were open. The Vatican sites were closed except St. Peters. You will find the historial sites open---check there web sites. On May 1 May Day the tickets were only one euro for historial sites. Roads nearby were close to traffic and it was one big party with the people. Great time. Buses, trains, and underground run on a limited service.
