newsycruiser Posted May 16, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2010 As a first time visitor to Seattle, I'd like to spend some time at the Pike Street Market and then walk back to the Celebrity cruise pier. However, it appears that Alaskan Way is a major thoroughfare. Is there any way to safely (and relatively slowly) cross Alaskan Way to get back to the pier? Or is a taxi necessary...and available? Thanks...........

Casagordita Posted May 16, 2010 #3 Share Posted May 16, 2010 What you're seeing on the map is probably the Alaska Way Viaduct. It's a major thoroughfare with heavy traffic and a 50 mph speed limit, and you definitely wouldn't want to have to cross it on foot! Fortunately, you don't--it's an elevated highway that you can walk under. The actual Alaska Way, underneath and next to it, is a boulevard with much slower speeds and a lot of crosswalks--perfectly safe to cross.
