Renting a Car in Freeport, suggestions on places to go?

We are a group of 6 adults and 2 kids and we want to relax and have fun, go to the beach, eat some island food and do a little shopping. Should we really rent a car and see more than we could just by taking a cab somewhere or should we just take a cab somewhere? We are trying to avoiding dropping a large chunk of money on excursions on all 3 of our ports and we figure this is one we could just hang out on our own.....so reward me with your thoughts please!!!

You could take a shared cab/bus for $5 pp each way that takes you to Port Lucaya. Their website is http://www.portlucayamarketplace.com. There's a public beach, Billy Joe's Shack where you can have conch fritters and try other bahamian food, the casino, and lots of other restaurants and shops. The hotel complex called Our Lucaya also sells day passes for around $20 pp to use their pools. All in all, it will give you an idea of the island for not a huge cash outlay.
