westlab Posted August 21, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2010 We are considering booking Jewell of Sea out of Boston on Oct 2nd. Category E1. How does this compare with HAL? Tell me more about this cruiseline/ship and the itinerary. I noticed excursions are much less expensive than AK. I have a room on hold for 24 hours. Can you tell I am excited.. and haven't booked it yet? We are getting ready to do 3rd cruise on HAL. DHADEN Posted August 21, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2010 We were on the Maasdam and not sure if that is the same size as the Volendam, but will give you my comparison to those two ships. First of all, (see signature history) out of all our RCI cruises, the Jewel is our ALL TIME FAVORITE ship. She is ABSOLUTELY B-E-utiful!! The crew and staff are the friendliest and most personable we experienced. I think since the HAL ships are smaller, you have more movement and better chance of sea sickness. HAL also has reputation of having an older group. We loved the Maasdam, but our complaint was the lounges (actually everything) closed down very early - 10:30 or 11:00 every night, and we enjoy staying up late and dancing the night away. That's also what we loved about the Jewel. The music and dancing went into the morning hours, and the Sea-View cafe was open til 1:30 for snacks. Hope This Helps. Diva Onboard Posted August 22, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Never sailed with HAL but I'm a Diamond member with Royal. We sailed a New England Canada cruise on the Jewel in October last year. She is one of RCCL's Radiance class ships and she is beautiful. We are doing the respositioning cruise on the Jewel this year the end of October out of Boston. You will love her.
